Isaiah 20
20
Exposed to Mockery and Jeers
1-2In the year the field commander, sent by King Sargon of Assyria, came to Ashdod and fought and took it, God told Isaiah son of Amoz, “Go, take off your clothes and sandals,” and Isaiah did it, going about naked and barefooted.
3-6Then God said, “Just as my servant Isaiah has walked around town naked and barefooted for three years as a warning sign to Egypt and Ethiopia, so the king of Assyria is going to come and take the Egyptians as captives and the Ethiopians as exiles. He’ll take young and old alike and march them out of there naked and barefooted, exposed to mockery and jeers—the bared buttocks of Egypt on parade! Everyone who has put hope in Ethiopia and expected help from Egypt will be thrown into confusion. Everyone who lives along this coast will say, ‘Look at them! Naked and barefooted, shuffling off to exile! And we thought they were our best hope, that they’d rescue us from the king of Assyria. Now what’s going to happen to us? How are we going to get out of this?’”

Isaiah Acts Out the Defeat of Egypt and Ethiopia
1King Sargon of Assyria gave orders for his army commander to capture the city of Ashdod.#20.1 Ashdod: King Sargon II of Assyria captured this Philistine city in 711 b.c. 2About this same time the Lord had told me, “Isaiah, take off everything, including your sandals!” I did this and went around naked and barefoot 3for three years.
Then the Lord said:
What Isaiah has done is a warning to Egypt and Ethiopia.#20.3 Ethiopia: See the note at 11.11. 4Everyone in these two countries will be led away naked and barefoot by the king of Assyria. Young or old, they will be taken prisoner, and Egypt will be disgraced. 5They will be confused and frustrated, because they depended on Ethiopia and bragged about Egypt. 6When this happens, the people who live along the coast#20.6 people … coast: Probably the Philistines. will say, “Look what happened to them! We ran to them for safety, hoping they would protect us from the king of Assyria. But now, there is no escape for us.”
