Isaiah 54
54
The Fertile Wife of Yahweh
1“Sing for joy, barren woman; who has not borne!
Burst forth into rejoicing and rejoice, she who has not been in labor!
For the children of the desolate woman are more than the children of the married woman,” says Yahweh.
2“Enlarge the site of your tent,
and let them stretch out the tent curtains of your dwelling place.
You must not spare; make your tent cords long
and strengthen your pegs,
3for you will spread out to the right and to the left.
And your descendants#Hebrew “descendant” will be heir to the nations,
and they will inhabit desolate towns.
4You must not fear, for you will not be ashamed,
and you must not be confounded, for you will not feel abashed,
for you will forget the shame of your youth,
and you will no longer remember the disgrace of your widowhood.
5For your husband#The Hebrew is plural is your maker,#The Hebrew is plural his name is Yahweh of hosts;
and your redeemer is the holy one of Israel, he is called the God of all of the earth.
6For Yahweh has called you like a wife forsaken and hurt of spirit,
like#Or “and” the wife of childhood when she is rejected, says your God.
7I abandoned you for a short#Literally “in a small” moment,
but#Or “and” I will gather you with great compassion.
8I hid my face from you for a moment, in the flowing of anger,
but#Or “and” I will have compassion on you with everlasting faithfulness” says your redeemer, Yahweh.
9“For this is like the waters of Noah to me,
when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again pass#Literally “from the passing over of the waters of Noah again” over the earth,
so I swore that I would not be#Literally “from being “ angry at you and rebuke you.
10For the mountains may depart,
and the hills may sway,
but#Or “and” my faithfulness shall not depart from you,
and my covenant of peace shall not sway,”
says Yahweh, who has compassion on you,
11“O afflicted one, driven away, who is not consoled.
Look! I am about to set your stones in hard mortar,
and I will lay your foundation with sapphires.
12And I will make#Literally “place” your battlements of ruby,
and your gates of stones of beryl,
and all your wall of precious stones.
13And all your children shall be pupils of Yahweh,
and the peace of your children shall be great.
14In righteousness you shall be established.
Be far from oppression, for you shall not fear,
and from terror, for it shall not come near you.
15If indeed one attacks, it is not from me;
whoever attacks you shall fall because of you.
16Look! I myself have created the craftsman who blows#Or “blowing” the fire of coals,
and who produces#Or “producing” a weapon for his work;
also#Or “and” I myself have created the destroyer to destroy.
17Every weapon formed against you shall not succeed,
and you shall declare guilty every tongue that rises against you for judgment.
This is the inheritance of the servants of Yahweh,
and their legal right#Literally “justice” from me,”
declares#Literally “declaration of” Yahweh.

A Promise of the Lord's Protection
1 #
Ga 4.27. Sing and shout,
even though you have never
had children!
The Lord has promised that you
will have more children
than someone married
for a long time.
2Make your tents larger!
Spread out the tent pegs;
fasten them firmly.
3You and your descendants
will take over the land
of other nations.
You will settle in towns
that are now in ruins.
4Don't be afraid or ashamed
and don't be discouraged.
You won't be disappointed.
Forget how sinful you were
when you were young;
stop feeling ashamed
for being left a widow.
5The Lord All-Powerful,
the Holy God of Israel,
rules all the earth.
He is your Creator and husband,
and he will rescue you.
6You were like a young wife,
brokenhearted and crying
because her husband
had divorced her.
But the Lord your God says,
“I am taking you back!
7I rejected you for a while,
but with love and tenderness
I will embrace you again.
8For a while, I turned away
in furious anger.
Now I will have mercy
and love you forever!
I, your protector and Lord,
make this promise.”
The Lord Promises Lasting Peace
9 #
Gn 9.8-17. I once promised Noah that I
would never again destroy
the earth by a flood.
Now I have promised that I
will never again get angry
and punish you.
10 #
Jdt 16.15. Every mountain and hill
may disappear.
But I will always be kind
and merciful to you;
I won't break my agreement
to give your nation peace.
The New Jerusalem
11 #
Rev 21.18-21. #Tb 13.16,17. Jerusalem, you are sad
and discouraged,
tossed around in a storm.
But I, the Lord,
will rebuild your city
with precious stones;#54.11 with precious stones: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
for your foundation
I will use blue sapphires.
12Your fortresses#54.12 fortresses: One possible meaning for the difficult Hebrew text.
will be built of rubies,
your gates of jewels,
and your walls of gems.
13 #
Jn 6.45. I will teach your children
and make them successful.
14You will be built on fairness
with no fears of injustice;
every one of your worries
will be taken far from you.
15I will never send anyone
to attack your city,
and you will make prisoners
of those who do attack.
16Don't forget that I created
metalworkers who make weapons
over burning coals.
I also created armies
that can bring destruction.
17Weapons made to attack you
won't be successful;
words spoken against you
won't hurt at all.
My servants, Jerusalem is yours!
I, the Lord, promise
to bless you with victory.
