Genesis 7

7
1 Then#Or “And” Yahweh said to Noah, “Go—you and all your household—into the ark, for I have seen you are righteous before me in this generation. 2From all the clean animals you must take for yourself seven pairs,#Literally “seven, seven” a male and its mate. And from the animals that are not clean you must take two, a male and its mate, 3as well as from the birds of heaven#Or “the sky” seven pairs,#Literally “seven, seven” male and female, to keep their kind alive#Literally “to keep seed alive” on the face of the earth. 4For within seven days#Literally “to seven days still” I will send rain upon the earth for forty days and forty nights. And I will blot out all the living creatures that I have made from upon the face of the ground.” 5And Noah did according to all that Yahweh commanded him.
The Flood
6Noah was six hundred years old#Literally “was a son of six hundred years” when#Or “and” the flood waters came upon the earth. 7And Noah and his sons and his wife, and the wives of his sons with him, went into the ark because of the waters of the flood. 8Of clean animals, and of animals which are not clean, and of the birds, and everything that creeps upon the ground, 9two of each#Literally “two, two” went to Noah, into the ark, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. 10And it happened that after seven days the waters of the flood came over the earth. 11In the six hundredth year of the life of Noah, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month—on that day all the springs of the great deep were split open, and the windows of heaven were opened. 12And the rain came upon the earth forty days and forty nights. 13On this same day, Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and the wife of Noah and the three wives of his sons with them, went into the ark, 14they and all the living creatures according to their#Or “its” kind, and all the domesticated animals according to their#Or “its” kind, and all the creatures that creep upon the earth according to their#Or “its” kind, all the birds according to their#Or “its” kind, every winged creature. 15And they came to Noah to the ark, two of each,#Literally “two, two” from every living thing in which was the breath of life. 16And those that came, male and female, of every living thing, came as God had commanded him. And Yahweh shut the door behind him. 17And the flood came forty days and forty nights upon the earth. And the waters increased, and lifted the ark, and it rose up from the earth. 18And the waters prevailed and increased greatly upon the earth. And the ark went upon the surface#Hebrew “face” of the waters. 19And the waters prevailed overwhelmingly#Literally “very very” upon the earth, and they covered all the high mountains which were under the entire heaven.#Or “the sky” 20The waters swelled fifteen cubits above the mountains, covering them.#Literally “Fifteen cubits above the waters swelled, and they covered the mountains” 21And every living thing that moved on the earth perished—the birds, and the domesticated animals, and the wild animals, and everything that swarmed on the earth, and all humankind. 22Everything in whose nostrils was the breath of life,#Literally “a breath of spirit of life” among all that was on dry land, died. 23And he#In context, God blotted out every living thing upon the surface of the ground, from humankind, to animals, to creeping things, and to the birds of heaven;#Or “the sky” they were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained. 24And the waters prevailed over the earth one hundred and fifty days.

Genesis 7

7
1Then the Lord said to Noah, “Go into the ark with your whole family. I know that you are a godly man among the people of today. 2Take seven pairs of every kind of ‘clean’ animal with you. Take a male and a female of each kind. Take one pair of every kind of animal that is not ‘clean.’ Take a male and a female of each kind. 3Also take seven pairs of every kind of bird. Take a male and a female of each kind. Then every kind will be kept alive. They can spread out again over the whole earth. 4Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth. It will rain for 40 days and 40 nights. I will destroy from the face of the earth every living creature I have made.”
5Noah did everything the Lord commanded him to do.
6Noah was 600 years old when the flood came on the earth. 7He and his sons entered the ark. His wife and his sons’ wives went with them. They entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood. 8Male and female pairs of “clean” animals and pairs of animals that were not “clean” came to Noah. So did male and female pairs of birds and of all the creatures that move along the ground. 9All of them came to Noah and entered the ark. Everything happened just as God had commanded Noah. 10After seven days the flood came on the earth.
11Noah was 600 years old. It was the 17th day of the second month of the year. On that day all of the springs at the bottom of the oceans burst open. God opened the windows of the sky. 12Rain fell on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights.
13On that same day Noah entered the ark together with his sons Shem, Ham and Japheth. Noah’s wife and the wives of his three sons also entered it. 14They had every kind of wild animal with them. They had every kind of livestock, creature that moves along the ground, and bird that flies. 15Pairs of all living creatures that breathe came to Noah and entered the ark. 16The animals going in were male and female of every living thing. Everything happened just as God had commanded Noah. Then the Lord shut him in.
17For 40 days the flood kept coming on the earth. As the waters rose higher, they lifted the ark high above the earth. 18The waters rose higher and higher on the earth. And the ark floated on the water. 19The waters rose on the earth until all the high mountains under the entire sky were covered. 20The waters continued to rise until they covered the mountains by more than 20 feet. 21Every living thing that moved on land died. The birds, the livestock and the wild animals died. All of the creatures that fill the earth also died. And so did every human being. 22Every breathing thing on dry land died. 23Every living thing on earth was wiped out. People and animals were destroyed. The creatures that move along the ground and the birds in the sky were wiped out. Everything on earth was destroyed. Only Noah and those with him in the ark were left.
24The waters flooded the earth for 150 days.
