Announcement of the Tenth Plague: Death of the Firstborn
1And Yahweh said to Moses, “Still one plague I will bring upon Pharaoh and upon Egypt; afterward he will release you from here. At the moment of his releasing, he will certainly drive you completely out from here. 2Speak in the ears of the people, and let them ask, a man from his neighbor and a woman from her neighbor, for objects of silver and objects of gold.” 3And Yahweh gave the people favor in the eyes of Egypt. Also the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the eyes of the servants of Pharaoh and in the eyes of the people.
4And Moses said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘About the middle of the night I will go out through the midst of Egypt, 5and every firstborn in the land of Egypt will die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne to the firstborn of the slave woman who is behind the pair of millstones and every firstborn animal.#The Hebrew word often refers to domestic animals 6And there will be a great cry of distress in all the land of Egypt, the like of which has not been nor will be again.#Literally “which like it has not been and like it will not be again” 7But against all the Israelites,#Literally “sons/children of Israel” from a man to an animal, a dog will not even bark,#Literally “move his tongue” or “sharpen his tongue” so that you will know that Yahweh makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.’ 8And all of these your servants will come down to me and bow to me, saying, ‘Go out, you and all the people who are at your feet.’ And afterward I will go out.” And he went out from Pharaoh in great anger.#Literally “with heat of nose”
9And Yahweh said to Moses, “Pharaoh will not listen to you, so that my wonders may multiply#Literally “for the sake of the multiplying of my wonders” in the land of Egypt.” 10And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh, and Yahweh hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not release the Israelites#Literally “sons/children of Israel” from his land.

Moses Warns the Egyptians That the Lord Will Kill Their First-Born Sons
1The Lord said to Moses:
I am going to punish the king#11.1 The king: See the note at 1.11. of Egypt and his people one more time. Then the king will gladly let you leave his land. In fact, he will even chase you out. 2Now go and tell my people to ask their Egyptian neighbors for gold and silver jewelry.
3So the Lord made the Egyptians greatly respect the Israelites, and everyone, including the king's officials, considered Moses an important leader.
4Moses went to the king and said:
I have come to let you know what the Lord is going to do. About midnight he will go through the land of Egypt, 5and wherever he goes, the first-born son in every family will die. Your own son will die, and so will the son of the lowest slave woman. Even the first-born males of your cattle will die. 6Everywhere in Egypt there will be loud crying. Nothing like this has ever happened before or will ever happen again.
7But there won't be any need for the Israelites to cry. Things will be so quiet that not even a dog will be heard barking. Then you Egyptians will know that the Lord is good to the Israelites, even while he punishes you. 8Your leaders will come and bow down, begging me to take my people and leave your country. Then we will leave.
Moses was very angry; he turned and left the king.
9What the Lord had earlier said to Moses came true. He had said, “The king of Egypt won't listen. Then I will perform even more miracles.” 10So the king of Egypt saw Moses and Aaron work miracles, but the Lord made him stubbornly refuse to let the Israelites leave his country.
