Matthew 17
17
1And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, and James, and John his brother, and doth bring them up to a high mount by themselves,
2and he was transfigured before them, and his face shone as the sun, and his garments did become white as the light,
3and lo, appear to them did Moses and Elijah, talking together with him.
4And Peter answering said to Jesus, ‘Sir, it is good to us to be here; if thou wilt, we may make here three booths — for thee one, and for Moses one, and one for Elijah.’
5While he is yet speaking, lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying, ‘This is My Son, — the Beloved, in whom I did delight; hear him.’
6And the disciples having heard, did fall upon their face, and were exceedingly afraid,
7and Jesus having come near, touched them, and said, ‘Rise, be not afraid,’
8and having lifted up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus only.
9And as they are coming down from the mount, Jesus charged them, saying, ‘Say to no one the vision, till the Son of Man out of the dead may rise.’
10And his disciples questioned him, saying, ‘Why then do the scribes say that Elijah it behoveth to come first?’
11And Jesus answering said to them, ‘Elijah doth indeed come first, and shall restore all things,
12and I say to you — Elijah did already come, and they did not know him, but did with him whatever they would, so also the Son of Man is about to suffer by them.’
13Then understood the disciples that concerning John the Baptist he spake to them.
14And when they came unto the multitude, there came to him a man, kneeling down to him,
15and saying, ‘Sir, deal kindly with my son, for he is lunatic, and doth suffer miserably, for often he doth fall into the fire, and often into the water,
16and I brought him near to thy disciples, and they were not able to heal him.’
17And Jesus answering said, ‘O generation, unstedfast and perverse, till when shall I be with you? till when shall I bear you? bring him to me hither;’
18and Jesus rebuked him, and the demon went out of him, and the lad was healed from that hour.
19Then the disciples having come to Jesus by himself, said, ‘Wherefore were we not able to cast him out?’
20And Jesus said to them, ‘Through your want of faith; for verily I say to you, if ye may have faith as a grain of mustard, ye shall say to this mount, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you,
21and this kind doth not go forth except in prayer and fasting.’
22And while they are living in Galilee, Jesus said to them, ‘The Son of Man is about to be delivered up to the hands of men,
23and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise,’ and they were exceeding sorry.
24And they having come to Capernaum, those receiving the didrachms came near to Peter, and said, ‘Your teacher — doth he not pay the didrachms?’ He saith, ‘Yes.’
25And when he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, ‘What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth — from whom do they receive custom or poll-tax? from their sons or from the strangers?’
26Peter saith to him, ‘From the strangers.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Then are the sons free;
27but, that we may not cause them to stumble, having gone to the sea, cast a hook, and the fish that hath come up first take thou up, and having opened its mouth, thou shalt find a stater, that having taken, give to them for me and thee.’

The true glory of Jesus
(Mark 9.2-13; Luke 9.28-36)
1Six days later Jesus took Peter and the brothers James and John with him. They went up on a very high mountain where they could be alone.#2 P 1.17,18. 2There in front of the disciples, Jesus was completely changed. His face was shining like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.
3All at once Moses and Elijah were there talking with Jesus. 4So Peter said to him, “Lord, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5While Peter was still speaking, the shadow of a bright cloud passed over them. From the cloud a voice said, “This is my own dear Son, and I am pleased with him. Listen to what he says!”#Gn 22.2; Ps 2.7; Is 42.1; Mt 3.17; 12.18; Mk 1.11; Lk 3.22; Dt 18.15. 6When the disciples heard the voice, they were so afraid that they fell flat on the ground. 7But Jesus came over and touched them. He said, “Get up and don't be afraid!” 8When they opened their eyes, they saw only Jesus.
9On their way down from the mountain, Jesus warned his disciples not to tell anyone what they had seen until after the Son of Man had been raised from death.
10The disciples asked Jesus, “Don't the teachers of the Law of Moses say that Elijah must come before the Messiah does?”#Ml 4.5.
11Jesus told them, “Elijah certainly will come and get everything ready. 12In fact, he has already come. But the people did not recognize him and treated him just as they wanted to. They will soon make the Son of Man suffer in the same way.”#Mt 11.14. 13Then the disciples understood that Jesus was talking to them about John the Baptist.
Jesus heals a boy
(Mark 9.14-29; Luke 9.37-43a)
14Jesus and his disciples returned to the crowd. A man knelt in front of him 15and said, “Lord, have pity on my son! He has a bad case of epilepsy and often falls into a fire or into water. 16I brought him to your disciples, but none of them could heal him.”
17Jesus said, “You people are too stubborn to have any faith! How much longer must I be with you? Why do I have to put up with you? Bring the boy here.” 18Then Jesus spoke sternly to the demon. It went out of the boy, and at once he was healed.
19Later the disciples went to Jesus in private and asked him, “Why couldn't we force out the demon?”
20-21Jesus replied:#Mt 21.21; Mk 11.23; 1 Co 13.2.
It is because you don't have enough faith! But I can promise you this. If you had faith no larger than a mustard seed, you could tell this mountain to move from here to there. And it would. Everything would be possible for you.#17.20,21 for you: Some manuscripts add, “But the only way to force out that kind of demon is by praying and going without eating.”
Jesus again speaks about his death
(Mark 9.30-32; Luke 9.43b-45)
22While Jesus and his disciples were going from place to place in Galilee, he told them, “The Son of Man will be handed over to people 23who will kill him. But three days later he will rise to life.” All this made the disciples very sad.
Paying the temple tax
24When Jesus and the others arrived in Capernaum, the collectors for the temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay the temple tax?”#Ex 30.13-15; 38.26.
25“Yes, he does,” Peter answered.
After they had returned home, Jesus went up to Peter and asked him, “Simon, what do you think? Do the kings of this earth collect taxes and fees from their own people or from foreigners?”#17.25 from their own people or from foreigners: Or “from their children or from others”.
26Peter answered, “From foreigners.”
Jesus replied, “Then their own people#17.26 From foreigners…their own people: Or “From other people…their children”. don't have to pay. 27But we don't want to cause trouble. So go and cast a line into the lake and pull out the first fish you hook. Open its mouth, and you will find a coin. Use it to pay your taxes and mine.”
