Psalms 1

BOOK I
(Psalms 1–41)
The Two Ways
1How happy is the man
who does not follow # Lit not walk in the advice of the wicked
or take # Lit stand in the path of sinners
or join a group # Or or sit in the seat of mockers! # Ps 26:4-5; Pr 4:14-15
2Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction,
and he meditates on it day and night. # Jos 1:8; Ps 40:8; 119:14-16
3He is like a tree planted beside streams of water # Or beside irrigation canals
that bears its fruit in season # Lit in its season # Rv 22:2
and whose leaf does not wither. # Ps 92:12-14; Jr 17:8
Whatever he does prospers. # Dt 5:33
4The wicked are not like this;
instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away. # Jb 21:18; Ps 35:5; Hs 13:3
5Therefore the wicked will not survive # Lit stand in the judgment, # Ps 5:5; 9:16; 76:7; Jr 25:31
and sinners will not be in the community of the righteous.
6For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, # Jb 34:21; Ps 37:18; Nah 1:7; Jn 10:14; 2Tm 2:19
but the way of the wicked leads to ruin. # Pr 21:12; Jn 3:16

Psalms 1
1
PSALM 1.
Beatus vir.
The happiness of the just and the evil state of the wicked.
1Blessed is the man who hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the chair of pestilence:
2But his will is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he shall meditate day and night.
3And he shall be like a tree which is planted near the running waters, which shall bring forth its fruit, in due season. And his leaf shall not fall off: and all whosoever he shall do shall prosper.
4Not so the wicked, not so: but like the dust, which the wind driveth from the face of the earth.
5Therefore the wicked shall not rise again in judgment: nor sinners in the council of the just.
6For the Lord knoweth the way of the just: and the way of the wicked shall perish.
