Matthew 7

Do Not Judge
1“Do not judge, so that you won’t be judged. # Mk 4:24-25; Lk 6:37-42 2For with the judgment you use, # Lit you judge you will be judged, and with the measure you use, # Lit you measure it will be measured to you. # Mk 4:24; Lk 6:38; Rm 2:1; 14:10; Jms 2:13 3Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye but don’t notice the log in your own eye? # Lk 6:41; Jn 8:7-9 4Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and look, there’s a log in your eye? 5Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. 6Don’t give what is holy to dogs or toss your pearls before pigs, # Pr 9:7-8; 23:9; Mt 15:26 or they will trample them with their feet, turn, and tear you to pieces.
Keep Asking, Searching, Knocking
7“Keep asking, # Or Ask # Lk 11:9-13 and it will be given to you. # Mt 18:22; Mk 11:24; Jn 14:13-14; 15:7; 16:24; Jms 1:5; 1Jn 3:22; 5:14 Keep searching, # Or Search and you will find. Keep knocking, # Or Knock and the door # Lit and it will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives, and the one who searches finds, # Pr 8:17; Is 55:6; Jr 29:12-13 and to the one who knocks, the door # Lit knocks, it will be opened. 9What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11If you then, who are evil, # Gn 6:5; 8:21 know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! 12Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them — this is the Law and the Prophets. # When capitalized, the Law and the Prophets = the OT # Mt 22:40; Lk 6:31; Rm 13:8; Gl 5:14
Entering the Kingdom
13“Enter through the narrow gate. # Lk 13:23-24 For the gate is wide and the road is broad that leads to destruction, # Mt 26:8; Mk 14:4; Jn 17:12; Ac 8:20; Rm 9:22; Php 1:28 and there are many who go through it. 14How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it.
15“Beware of false prophets # Mt 24:11,24; Mk 13:22; Lk 6:26; Ac 13:6; 2Pt 2:1 who come to you in sheep’s # Mt 9:36; 10:6,16; 12:11-12; 15:24; 18:12-13 clothing # Mc 3:5; 2Tm 3:5 but inwardly are ravaging wolves. # Ezk 22:27; Jn 10:12; Ac 20:29 16You’ll recognize them by their fruit. # Pr 11:30; Mt 12:33; Lk 6:43-44; Jn 4:36; Jms 3:12 Are grapes gathered from thornbushes or figs from thistles? # Mt 13:7; Heb 6:8 17In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18A good tree can’t produce bad fruit; neither can a bad tree produce good fruit. 19Every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. # Jr 11:19; Mt 3:10; Lk 3:9; 13:7; Jn 15:2; Jd 12 20So you’ll recognize them by their fruit. # Mt 7:16; 12:33; Lk 6:44; Jms 3:12
21“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord! ’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, # Mt 3:2; 18:3; Mk 9:43 but only the one who does the will # Ps 143:10; Pr 16:9; Mt 12:50; Gl 1:4; Eph 1:9; 1Jn 2:17 of My Father in heaven. # Hs 8:2; Mt 25:11; Lk 6:46; Rm 2:13; Jms 1:22 22On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons # Mk 3:15; Rv 9:20; 18:2 in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name? ’ # Nm 24:4; Mt 10:15; Lk 13:25; Jn 11:51; 1Co 13:2 23Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!’ # Lit you who work lawlessness # Ps 5:5; 6:8; Mt 25:12,41; Lk 13:25-27 # Ps 6:8
The Two Foundations
24“Therefore, # Lk 6:47-49; Jms 1:22-25 everyone who hears these words # Mt 12:36; Mk 4:14; Lk 6:47; 8:21; Jn 1:1; 2:22 of Mine and acts on them will be like a sensible man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain fell, the rivers rose, and the winds blew and pounded that house. Yet it didn’t collapse, because its foundation was on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of Mine and doesn’t act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27The rain fell, the rivers rose, the winds blew and pounded that house, and it collapsed. And its collapse was great! ”
28When Jesus had finished this sermon, # Lit had ended these words # Mt 11:1; 13:53; 19:1; 26:1 the crowds were astonished at His teaching, # Mt 13:54; 22:23; Mk 1:22; 6:2; 11:18; Lk 4:32; Jn 7:46 29because He was teaching them like one who had authority, and not like their scribes.

Judging others
(Luke 6.37,38,41,42)
Jesus said:
1Don't condemn others, and God won't condemn you. 2God will be as hard on you as you are on others! He will treat you exactly as you treat them.#Mk 4.24.
3You can see the speck in your friend's eye, but you don't notice the log in your own eye. 4How can you say, “My friend, let me take the speck out of your eye,” when you don't see the log in your own eye? 5You're nothing but show-offs! First, take the log out of your own eye. Then you can see how to take the speck out of your friend's eye.
6Don't give to dogs what belongs to God. They will only turn and attack you. Don't throw pearls down in front of pigs. They will trample all over them.
Ask, search, knock
(Luke 11.9-13)
Jesus continued:
7Ask, and you will receive. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened for you. 8Everyone who asks will receive. Everyone who searches will find. And the door will be opened for everyone who knocks. 9Would any of you give your hungry child a stone, if the child asked for some bread? 10Would you give your child a snake if the child asked for a fish? 11As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give good things to people who ask.
12Treat others as you want them to treat you. This is what the Law and the Prophets#7.12 the Law and the Prophets: See the note at 5.17. are all about.#Lk 6.31.
The narrow gate
(Luke 13.24)
Jesus continued:
13Go in through the narrow gate. The gate to destruction is wide, and the road that leads there is easy to follow. A lot of people go through that gate. 14But the gate to life is very narrow. The road that leads there is so hard to follow that only a few people find it.
A tree and its fruit
(Luke 6.43-45)
Jesus continued:
15Watch out for false prophets! They dress up like sheep, but inside they are wolves who have come to attack you. 16You can tell what they are by what they do. No one picks grapes or figs from thorn bushes. 17A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot produce good fruit. 19Every tree that produces bad fruit will be chopped down and burnt.#Mt 3.10; Lk 3.9. 20You can tell who the false prophets are by their deeds.#Mt 12.33.
A warning
(Luke 13.26,27)
Jesus continued:
21Not everyone who calls me their Lord will get into the kingdom of heaven. Only the ones who obey my Father in heaven will get in. 22On the day of judgment many will call me their Lord. They will say, “We preached in your name, and in your name we forced out demons and performed many miracles.” 23But I will tell them, “I will have nothing to do with you! Get out of my sight, you evil people!”#Ps 6.8.
Two builders
(Luke 6.47-49)
Jesus continued:
24Anyone who hears and obeys these teachings of mine is like a wise person who built a house on solid rock. 25Rain poured down, rivers flooded, and winds beat against that house. But it did not fall, because it was built on solid rock.
26Anyone who hears my teachings and doesn't obey them is like a foolish person who built a house on sand. 27The rain poured down, the rivers flooded, and the winds blew and beat against that house. Finally, it fell with a crash.
28When Jesus finished speaking, the crowds were surprised at his teaching.#Mk 1.22; Lk 4.32. 29He taught them like someone with authority, and not like their teachers of the Law of Moses.
