Isaiah 63

The Lord’s Day of Vengeance
1Who is this coming from Edom # Ps 137:7; Is 34:5-6; Ezk 25:12-14; 35:1-15; Ob 1-14; Mal 1:2-5
in crimson-stained garments from Bozrah —
this One who is splendid in His apparel,
rising up proudly # Syr, Vg read apparel, striding forward in His great might?
It is I, proclaiming vindication, # Or righteousness
powerful to save.
2Why are Your clothes red,
and Your garments like one who treads a winepress? # Rv 19:13-15
3I trampled the winepress alone,
and no one from the nations was with Me.
I trampled them in My anger
and ground them underfoot in My fury;
their blood spattered My garments,
and all My clothes were stained.
4For I planned the day of vengeance, # Lit For day of vengeance in My heart # Is 34:8; 61:2; Jr 46:10
and the year of My redemption # Or blood revenge came.
5I looked, but there was no one to help, # Is 59:16
and I was amazed that no one assisted;
so My arm accomplished victory for Me,
and My wrath assisted Me.
6I crushed nations in My anger;
I made them drunk with My wrath # Is 29:9; 51:17; Jr 51:39
and poured out their blood on the ground. # Rv 14:20
Remembrance of Grace
7I will make known the Lord’s faithful love
and the Lord’s praiseworthy acts,
because of all the Lord has done for us —
even the many good things
He has done for the house of Israel
and has done for them based on His compassion
and the abundance of His faithful love.
8He said, “They are indeed My people,
children who will not be disloyal,”
and He became their Savior.
9In all their suffering, He suffered, # Alt Hb tradition reads did not suffer # Jdg 10:16
and the Angel of His Presence saved them.
He redeemed them
because of His love and compassion; # Dt 7:7-8
He lifted them up and carried them
all the days of the past. # Dt 1:31; 32:10-12; Is 46:3
10But they rebelled
and grieved His Holy Spirit. # Ps 51:11; 78:40; 106:33; Is 48:16; Ac 7:51; Eph 4:30
So He became their enemy
and fought against them.
11Then He # Or he, or they remembered the days of the past,
the days of Moses and his people.
Where is He who brought them out of the sea
with the shepherds # LXX, Tg, Syr read shepherd of His flock?
Where is He who put His Holy Spirit among the flock?
12He sent His glorious arm
to be at Moses’ right hand,
divided the waters before them # Ex 14:21; Ps 74:13
to obtain eternal fame for Himself,
13and led them through the depths
like a horse in the wilderness,
so that they did not stumble.
14Like cattle that go down into the valley,
the Spirit of the Lord gave them # Lit him rest.
You led Your people this way
to make a glorious name for Yourself.
Israel’s Prayer
15Look down from heaven and see # Dt 26:15; Ps 80:14
from Your lofty home — holy and beautiful.
Where is Your zeal and Your might?
Your yearning # Lit The agitation of Your inward parts and Your compassion
are withheld from me.
16Yet You are our Father,
even though Abraham does not know us
and Israel doesn’t recognize us.
You, Yahweh, are our Father;
from ancient times,
Your name is our Redeemer. # Is 41:14; 43:14
17Why, Yahweh, do You make us stray from Your ways?
You harden our hearts so we do not fear # Lit our heart from fearing You. # Is 6:10
Return, because of Your servants,
the tribes of Your heritage.
18Your holy people had a possession # Or Your people possessed Your holy place
for a little while,
but our enemies have trampled down
Your sanctuary. # Ps 74:3-7; Is 64:11
19We have become like those You never ruled over,
like those not called by Your name. # Dt 28:10; Is 43:7; 65:1

Yeshayah (Isaiah) 63
63
1Who is this coming from Eḏom, with garments of glowing colours from Botsrah, who is robed in splendour, striding forward in the greatness of His strength? “It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”
2Why is there red on Your raiment, and Your garments like one who treads in the winepress?
3“I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples no one was with Me. And I trod them down in My displeasure, and I trampled them in My wrath. Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, and I have defiled all My raiment.
4“For a day of vengeance is in My heart, and the year of My redeemed has come.
5“And I looked, but there was none helping, and I was astonished that there was none upholding. So My own arm saved for Me, and My wrath upheld Me.
6“And I trod down peoples in My displeasure, and made them drunk in My wrath, and brought down their strength to earth.”
7Let me recount the loving-commitments of יהוה and the praises of יהוה, according to all that יהוה has done for us, and the great goodness toward the house of Yisra’ĕl, which He has done for them according to His compassion, and according to His many loving-commitments.
8And He said, “They are My people, children who do not act falsely.” And He became their Saviour.
9In all their distress He was distressed, and the Messenger of His Presence saved them. In His love and in His compassion He redeemed them, and He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.
10But they rebelled and grieved His Set-apart Spirit, so He turned against them as an enemy, and He fought against them.
11Then He remembered the days of old, Mosheh, His people, “Where is He who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of His flock? Where is He who put His Set-apart Spirit within him,
12who led them by the right hand of Mosheh, with His comely arm, dividing the water before them to make for Himself an everlasting Name,
13who led them through the deep? Like a horse in the wilderness they did not stumble.”
14As a beast goes down into the valley, and the Spirit of יהוה causes him to rest, so You led Your people, to make Yourself a comely Name.
15Look down from the heavens, and see from Your set-apart and comely dwelling. Where are Your ardour and Your might, the stirring of Your inward parts and Your compassion toward me? Are they withheld?
16For You are our Father, though Aḇraham does not know us, and Yisra’ĕl does not recognise us. You, O יהוה, are our Father, our Redeemer – Your Name is from of old.
17O יהוה, why do You make us stray from Your ways, and harden our heart from Your fear? Turn back, for the sake of Your servants, the tribes of Your inheritance.
18For a little while Your set-apart people possessed it – our adversaries have trodden down Your set-apart place.#See Psa. 74; Psa. 79; Jer. 51:51; Lam. 1:10; Dan. 8:13; Dan. 11:31; Mat. 24:15
19We have become like those over whom You never ruled – Your Name is not called on them!
