Messiah’s Jubilee
1The Spirit of the Lord God is on Me, # Is 11:2; 42:1; 48:16; Lk 4:18-19
because the Lord has anointed Me
to bring good news to the poor. # Lk 7:22
He has sent Me to heal # Lit bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and freedom to the prisoners; # Is 42:7; 49:9
2to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, # Is 49:8
and the day of our God’s vengeance; # Is 2:12; 13:6; 34:2,8
to comfort # Is 40:1 all who mourn,
3to provide for those who mourn in Zion;
to give them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
festive oil instead of mourning, # Ps 45:7; Heb 1:9
and splendid clothes instead of despair. # Lit a dim spirit
And they will be called righteous trees,
planted by the Lord
to glorify Him. # Is 60:21; Jr 17:7-8
4They will rebuild the ancient ruins; # Is 49:8; 58:12; Ezk 36:33; Am 9:14
they will restore the former devastations;
they will renew the ruined cities,
the devastations of many generations.
5Strangers will stand and feed your flocks,
and foreigners will be your plowmen and vinedressers. # Is 14:2; 60:10
6But you will be called the Lord’s priests; # Ex 19:6; Is 66:21; 1Pt 2:5,9
they will speak of you as ministers of our God;
you will eat the wealth of the nations,
and you will boast in their riches.
7Because your shame was double, # Is 54:4
and they cried out, “Disgrace is their portion,”
therefore, they will possess double in their land, # Is 40:2; Zch 9:12
and eternal joy will be theirs.
8For I Yahweh love justice; # Ps 11:7; Is 59:15
I hate robbery and injustice; # Some Hb mss, DSS, LXX, Syr, Tg, Vg; other Hb mss read robbery with a burnt offering
I will faithfully reward them
and make an everlasting covenant # Is 24:5; 55:3 with them.
9Their descendants will be known among the nations,
and their posterity among the peoples.
All who see them will recognize
that they are a people the Lord has blessed.
10I greatly rejoice in the Lord,
I exult in my God;
for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation
and wrapped me in a robe of righteousness, # Is 49:18; 52:1; 59:17
as a groom wears a turban
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. # Rv 21:2
11For as the earth produces its growth,
and as a garden enables what is sown to spring up,
so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
to spring up before all the nations. # Is 45:23-24; 60:18,21

Isaiah 61

The Year of Yahweh’s Favor
1The Spirit of the Lord Yahweh is upon me,
because Yahweh has anointed me,
he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,
to bind up the brokenhearted,#Literally “those broken of heart”
to proclaim#Literally “call” release to the captives
and liberation to those who are bound,
2to proclaim#Literally “call” the year of Yahweh’s favor,
and our God’s day of vengeance,
to comfort all those in mourning,
3to give#Literally “place” for those in mourning in Zion,
to give them a head wrap instead of ashes,
the oil of joy instead of mourning,
a garment of praise instead of a faint spirit.
And they will be called#Literally “it will be called to them” oaks of righteousness,
the planting of Yahweh, to show his glory.
4And they shall build the ancient ruins,
they shall erect the former deserted places.
And they shall restore the devastated cities,#Literally “cities of devastation”
the deserted places of many generations.#Literally “generation and generation”
5And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks,#Hebrew “flock”
and foreigners#Literally “sons of a foreign country” shall be your farmers and vinedressers.
6But#Or “And” you shall be called the priests of Yahweh,
you will be called#Literally “it shall be said of you” servers of our God.
You shall eat the wealth of the nations,
and you shall boast in their riches.
7Instead of your shame, a double portion,
and instead of insult, they will rejoice over their portion.
Therefore they will take a double portion in their land;
they shall possess everlasting joy.#Literally “possession of joy everlasting shall be for them”
8For I, Yahweh, love justice,
hate robbery and#Or “in” injustice,
and I will faithfully#Literally “in the faithfulness” give their reward,
and I will make#Literally “cut” an everlasting covenant with#Literally “to” them.
9And their descendants#Hebrew “descendant” will be known among the nations,
and their offspring in the midst of the peoples.
All those who see them shall recognize them,
that they are descendants#Hebrew “descendant” whom Yahweh has blessed.
10I will rejoice greatly in Yahweh;
my being shall shout in exultation in my God.
For he has clothed me with garments of salvation,
he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom adorns himself with a head wrap like a priest,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewelry.
11For as the earth produces#Literally “brings out” its sprout,
and as a garden makes its plants sprout,
so the Lord Yahweh will make righteousness sprout,
and praise before all the nations.
