Isaiah 22

An Oracle against Jerusalem
1An oracle # Is 13:1 against the Valley of Vision: # Ps 125:2; Jr 21:13; Jl 3:12,14
What’s the matter with you?
Why have all of you gone up to the rooftops? # Is 15:3
2The noisy city, the jubilant town, # Is 23:7; 32:13
is filled with revelry.
Your dead did not die by the sword;
they were not killed in battle.
3All your rulers have fled together,
captured without a bow.
All your fugitives were captured together;
they had fled far away.
4Therefore I said,
“Look away from me! Let me weep bitterly! # Is 15:3; 33:7; Jr 9:1; Zch 12:10
Do not try to comfort me
about the destruction of my dear # Lit of the daughter of my people.”
5For the Lord God of Hosts
had a day of tumult, trampling, and confusion # Is 10:6; 37:3; 63:3
in the Valley of Vision —
people shouting # Or Vision — a tearing down of a wall, or Vision — Kir raged ; Hb obscure and crying to the mountains;
6Elam took up a quiver
with chariots and horsemen, # Lit chariots of man
and Kir # 2Kg 16:9; Am 1:5; 9:7 uncovered the shield.
7Your best valleys were full of chariots,
and horsemen were positioned at the gates.
8He removed the defenses of Judah.
On that day you looked to the weapons in the House of the Forest. # 1Kg 7:2; 10:17 9You saw that there were many breaches in the walls of the city of David. # Lk 2:4 You collected water from the lower pool. # 2Kg 20:20; Neh 3:16 10You counted the houses of Jerusalem so that you could tear them down to fortify the wall. 11You made a reservoir between the walls # 2Kg 25:4; Jr 39:4 for the waters of the ancient pool, # 2Kg 20:20; 2Ch 32:3-4 but you did not look to the One who made it, or consider the One who created it long ago.
12On that day the Lord God of Hosts
called for weeping, # Is 32:11; Jl 1:13; 2:17 for wailing, for shaven heads,
and for the wearing of sackcloth.
13But look: joy and gladness,
butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep,
eating of meat, and drinking of wine —
“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die! ” # Is 56:12; 1Co 15:32
14The Lord of Hosts has directly revealed to me: # Is 5:9
“This sin of yours will never # Lit will not until you die be wiped out.” # 1Sm 3:14; Ezk 24:13
The Lord God of Hosts has spoken.
An Oracle against Shebna
15The Lord God of Hosts said: “Go to Shebna, # 2Kg 18:18,26,37; Is 36:3,11,22; 37:2 that steward who is in charge of the palace, and say to him: 16What are you doing here? Who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here, carving your tomb on the height and cutting a crypt for yourself out of rock? # 2Sm 18:18; 2Ch 16:14; Mt 27:60 17Look, you strong man! The Lord is about to shake you violently. He will take hold of you, 18wind you up into a ball, and sling you into a wide land. # Hb obscure There you will die, and there your glorious chariots will be — a disgrace to the house of your lord. 19I will remove you from your office; you will be ousted from your position.
20“On that day I will call for my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah. # 2Kg 18:18; Is 36:3,22; 37:2 21I will clothe him with your robe and tie your sash around him. I will put your authority into his hand, and he will be like a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the House of Judah. # Gn 45:8; Jb 29:16 22I will place the key # Mt 16:19; Rv 3:7 of the House of David on his shoulder; what he opens, no one can close; what he closes, no one can open. # Jb 12:14 23I will drive him, like a peg, into a firm place. He will be a throne of honor for his father’s house. 24They will hang on him the whole burden of his father’s house: the descendants and the offshoots — all the small vessels, from bowls to every kind of jar. 25On that day” — the declaration of the Lord of Hosts — “the peg that was driven into a firm place will give way, be cut off, and fall, and the load on it will be destroyed.” Indeed, the Lord has spoken.

The Valley of Vision
1The [mournful, inspired] oracle (#I.e. an urgent message the prophet is under compulsion to proclaim.a burden to be carried) concerning the Valley of Vision:
What is the matter with you now, that you have all gone up to the housetops,
2You [Jerusalem] who were full of noise,
A tumultuous city, a joyous and exuberant city;
Your slain were not slain [in a glorious death] with the sword,
Nor did they die in battle.
3All your leaders have fled together [with your king],
And have been captured without the bow [which they had thrown away];
All of you who were found were taken captive together,
Though they had fled far away.
4Therefore I say, “Look away from me;
Let me weep bitterly.
Do not try to comfort me over the destruction of the daughter of my people.”
5For the Lord God of hosts has a day of panic and of tumult, of trampling, of confusion
In the Valley of Vision,
A [day of] breaking down walls
And a crying [for help] to the mountain.
6Elam took up the quiver
With the chariots, infantry and horsemen;
And Kir uncovered the shield.
7And it came to pass that your choicest valleys were full of chariots,
And the horsemen took their fixed positions [in an offensive array] at the gate [of Jerusalem].
8Then God removed the [protective] covering of Judah;
And in that day you looked to the weapons of the House of the Forest (Solomon’s armory).
9You saw that the breaches
In the wall of the City of David [the citadel of Zion] were many;
You collected [within the city’s walls] the waters of the Lower Pool (Siloam).
10Then you counted the houses of Jerusalem
And you tore down the houses [to get materials] to fortify the city wall [by extending it].
11You also made a reservoir between the two walls
For the waters of the #Perhaps a reference to the Gihon Spring, also called the Upper Pool.Old Pool,
But you did not look to its Maker,
Nor did you recognize Him who planned it long ago.
12Therefore in that day the Lord God of hosts called you to weeping, to mourning,
To shaving the head and to wearing sackcloth [in humiliation].
13Instead, there is joy and jubilation,
Killing of oxen and slaughtering of sheep,
Eating meat and drinking wine, saying,
“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.”
14But the Lord of hosts revealed Himself in my ears,
“This sin absolutely will not be forgiven you
Until you die,” says the Lord God of hosts.
15For the Lord God of hosts says this, “Go to this [contemptible] steward,
To #Shebna would have been second in command to King Hezekiah before being deposed from steward (administrator) to the position of scribe (36:3).Shebna, who is in charge of the royal household [but is building himself a tomb worthy of a king, and say to him],
16‘What business do you have here?
And whom do you have here,
That you have hewn out a tomb here for yourself,
You who hew a sepulcher on the height,
You who carve a resting place for yourself in the rock?
17Listen carefully, the Lord is about to hurl you away violently, O man;
And He is about to grasp you firmly
18And roll you up tightly like a ball
And toss you into a vast country;
There you will die
And there your splendid chariots will be,
You shame of your master’s house.’
19I will depose you from your office,
And you will be pulled down from your position [of importance].
20Then it will come to pass in that day
That I will summon My servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah.
21And I will clothe him with your tunic [of distinction]
And tie your sash securely around him.
I will entrust him with your authority;
He will become a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
22Then I will set on his shoulder the key of the house of David;
When he opens no one will shut,
When he shuts no one will open.
23I will drive him like a peg in a firm place,
And he will become a throne of honor and glory to his father’s house.
24So they will hang on him all the honor and glory [the complete responsibility] of his father’s house, offspring and issue [of the family, high and low], all the least of the articles, from the bowls to all the jars. 25In that day,” declares the Lord of hosts, “the peg (Eliakim) that was driven into the firm place will give way; it will even break off and fall, and the burden hanging on it will be cut off, for the Lord has spoken.”
