Isaiah 15

An Oracle against Moab
1An oracle against Moab: # Gn 19:31-37; Is 11:14; 25:10; Jr 48:1-38; Ezk 25:8-11; Am 2:1-3; Zph 2:8-9
Ar in Moab is devastated, # Nm 21:28
destroyed in a night.
Kir in Moab is devastated,
destroyed in a night.
2Dibon went up to its temple
to weep at its high places.
Moab wails on Nebo and at # Or wails over Nebo and over Medeba.
Every head is shaved;
every beard is cut off.
3In its streets they wear sackcloth;
on its rooftops and in its public squares everyone wails,
falling down and weeping.
4Heshbon and Elealeh cry out;
their voices are heard as far away as Jahaz. # Nm 21:28; 32:3; Jr 48:34
Therefore the soldiers of Moab cry out,
and they tremble. # Lit out, he trembles within himself
5My heart cries out over Moab,
whose fugitives flee as far as Zoar, # Gn 19:21-22
to Eglath-shelishiyah;
they go up the slope of Luhith weeping;
they raise a cry of destruction
on the road to Horonaim.
6The waters of Nimrim # Nm 32:3,36; Jos 13:27 are desolate;
the grass is withered, the foliage is gone,
and the vegetation has vanished.
7So they carry their wealth and belongings
over the Wadi of the Willows. # Is 30:6; Jr 48:36
8For their cry echoes
throughout the territory of Moab.
Their wailing reaches Eglaim;
their wailing reaches Beer-elim.
9The waters of Dibon # DSS, some LXX mss, Vg; MT reads Dimon are full of blood, # 2Kg 3:22-23
but I will bring on Dibon # DSS, some LXX mss, Vg; MT reads Dimon even more than this —
a lion for those who escape from Moab,
and for the survivors in the land. # 2Sm 23:20; 1Ch 11:22

God will Destroy Moab
1 #
Is 25.10–12; Jer 48.1–47; Ezek 25.8–11; Amos 2.1–3; Zeph 2.8–11 This is a message about Moab.
The cities of Ar and Kir are destroyed in a single night, and silence covers the land of Moab. 2The people of Dibon#15.2 Probable text people of Dibon; Hebrew people and Dibon. climb the hill to weep at the shrine. The people of Moab wail in grief over the cities of Nebo and Medeba; they have shaved their heads and their beards in grief. 3The people in the streets are dressed in sackcloth; in the city squares and on the housetops people mourn and cry. 4The people of Heshbon and Elealeh cry out, and their cry can be heard as far away as Jahaz. Even the soldiers tremble; their courage is gone. 5My heart cries out for Moab! The people have fled to the town of Zoar, and to Eglath Shelishiyah. Some climb the road to Luhith, weeping as they go; some escape to Horonaim, grieving loudly. 6The brook of Nimrim is dry, the grass beside it has withered, and nothing green is left. 7The people go across the Valley of Willows, trying to escape with all their possessions. 8Everywhere at Moab's borders the sound of crying is heard. It is heard at the towns of Eglaim and Beerelim. 9At the town of Dibon the river is red with blood, and God has something even worse in store for the people there. Yes, there will be a bloody slaughter of everyone left in Moab.
