Isaiah 60
60
The LORD Will Be Jerusalem’s Glory
1Arise! Shine! Your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has dawned.
2Darkness now covers the earth,
and thick darkness covers the nations.
But the Lord dawns,
and his glory appears over you.
3Nations will come to your light,
and kings will come to the brightness of your dawn.
4“Look up, look around, and watch.
All of your people assemble and come to you.
Your sons come from far away.
Your daughters are carried in their arms.
5Then you will see this and rejoice,
and your heart will be thrilled with joy,
because the riches of the sea will be brought to you.
The wealth of the nations will come to you.
6“Many camels will cover your ⌞land⌟,
young camels from Midian and Ephah.
Everyone from Sheba will come.
They will bring gold and incense.
They will sing the praises of the Lord.
7All of the flocks from Kedar will gather and come to you.
The rams of Nebaioth will serve you.
They will be sacrificed as acceptable ⌞offerings⌟ on my altar.
So I will honor my beautiful temple.
8“Who are these people that fly by like clouds,
like doves to their nests?
9Certainly, the coastlands wait with hope for me.
The ships from Tarshish are the first to bring your children
from far away.
Their silver and their gold comes with them
to honor the name of the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel,
because he has honored you.
10“Foreigners will rebuild your walls,
and their kings will serve you.
In my anger I struck you,
but in my favor I have compassion on you.
11Your gates will always be open.
They will never be closed day or night
so that people may bring you the wealth of nations,
with their kings led as prisoners.
12Nations and kingdoms that do not serve you will be destroyed.
The nations will certainly be ruined.
13“Lebanon’s glory will come to you:
Cedar, fir, and cypress trees will come to beautify my holy place,
and I will honor the place where my feet rest.
14The descendants of those who oppress you will bow in front of you.
All who despise you will bow at your feet.
They will call you the city of the Lord,
Zion, the city of the Holy One of Israel.
15“You have been abandoned and hated; no one has passed through you.
But now I will make you a source of everlasting pride,
a joy for all generations.
16You will drink milk from other nations
and nurse at royal breasts.
Then you will know that I am the Lord, your Savior,
the Mighty One of Jacob, your Defender.
17I will bring gold instead of bronze.
I will bring silver instead of iron,
bronze instead of wood, and iron instead of stone.
I will appoint peace as your governor and righteousness as your ruler.
18No longer will you hear about violence in your land
or desolation and destruction within your borders.
You will call your walls Salvation and your gates Praise.
19The sun will no longer be your light during the day,
nor will the brightness of the moon give you light,
But the Lord will be your everlasting light.
Your God will be your glory.
20Your sun will no longer go down,
nor will your moon disappear.
The Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your days of sadness will be over.
21Then all your people will be righteous,
and they will possess the land permanently.
They will be the seedling I have planted,
the honored work of my hands.
22The smallest of them will become a family.
The weakest of them will become a mighty nation.
At the right time I, the Lord, will make it happen quickly.”

Zion Glorified
1“Arise, shine! For your light has come,
and the glory of Yahweh has risen on you.
2For look! darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples,
but#Or “and” Yahweh will rise on you,
and his glory will appear over you.
3And nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the bright light of your sunrise.
4Lift up your eyes all around and see!
All of them gather; they come to you.
Your sons shall come from afar,
and your daughters shall be looked after on the hip.
5Then you shall see
and you shall be radiant;
and your heart shall tremble
and open itself wide,
because the abundance of the sea shall fall upon you;
the wealth of the nations shall come to you.
6A multitude of camels shall cover you,
the young male camels of Midian and Ephah.
All those from Sheba shall come;
they shall bring gold and frankincense,
and they shall proclaim the praise of Yahweh.
7All the flocks of Kedar shall be gathered to you;
the rams of Nebaioth shall serve you.
They shall present a sacrifice for favor on my altar,
and I will glorify my honorable house.#Literally “house of my honor”
8Who are these? They fly like a cloud,
and like doves to their coops.
9Because the coastlands wait for me,
and the ships of Tarshish are first
to bring your children from afar,
their silver and gold with them,
for the name of Yahweh your God,
and for the holy one of Israel, because he has glorified you.
10And foreigners#Literally “sons of a foreign country” shall build your walls,
and their kings shall serve you,
for in my anger I struck you,
but#Or “and” in my favor I have taken pity on you.
11And your gates shall continually be open,
day and night they shall not be shut,
to bring you the wealth of nations,
and their kings shall be led.
12For the nation and the kingdom that will not serve you shall perish,
and the nations shall be utterly devastated.
13The glory of Lebanon shall come to you;
the cypress, the plane, and the pine together,
to glorify the place of my sanctuary,
and I will do honor to the place of my feet.
14And the children of those who oppressed you shall come to you bending low,
and all those who treated you disrespectfully shall bow down at the soles of your feet.
And they shall call you the city of Yahweh,
Zion of the holy one of Israel.
15Instead of you being forsaken
and hated with no one passing through,#Or “and there is not one who passes through”
I will make#Literally “place” you an everlasting object of pride,#Literally “pride”
a joy of coming generations.#Literally “generation and generation”
16And you shall suck the milk of nations,
and suck the breast of kings,
and you shall know that I am Yahweh your Savior,
and your Redeemer, the Strong One of Jacob.
17Instead of bronze I will bring gold,
and instead of iron I will bring silver,
and instead of wood, bronze,
and instead of stones, iron.
And I will appoint#Literally “put” peace as your overseer,
and righteousness as your ruling body.#Literally “they who force you to work”
18Violence shall no longer be heard in your land;
devastation or#Or “and” destruction on your borders.
And you shall call your walls Salvation,
and your gates, Praise.
19The sun shall no longer be your light by day,
and for bright light the moon shall not give you light,
but#Or “and” Yahweh will be your everlasting light,
and your God your glory.
20Your sun shall no longer go down,
and your moon shall not wane,#Literally “be taken away”
for Yahweh himself will be your everlasting light,
and your days of mourning shall come to an end.
21And all your people shall be righteous;
they shall take possession of the land forever,
the shoot of his#The reading tradition (Qere) has “my” planting,
the work of my hands, to show my glory.
22The small one shall become a tribe,
and the smallest one a mighty nation.
I am Yahweh; I will hasten it in its time.”
