Isaiah 20
20
Those Who Were Allied with Egypt Will Be Ashamed
1In the year when King Sargon of Assyria sent his commander-in-chief to fight against Ashdod, he captured it. 2At that time the Lord told Isaiah, son of Amoz, “Take off the sackcloth that you are wearing, and take off your sandals!” Isaiah did this and walked around barefoot and naked.
3Then the Lord said, “My servant Isaiah has gone barefoot and naked for three years as a sign and as an omen to Egypt and Sudan. 4The king of Assyria will lead away both the young and the old—captives from Egypt and exiles from Sudan. They will be barefoot and naked. Their buttocks will be exposed in order to disgrace Egypt. 5Then the people will be shattered and ashamed because Sudan was their hope and Egypt was their beauty. 6When that day comes, those who live on this coastland will say, ‘Look at what has happened to our hope. We ran ⌞to Egypt⌟ for help to be rescued from the king of Assyria. How can we escape?’ ”

Isaiah Acts Out the Defeat of Egypt and Ethiopia
1King Sargon of Assyria gave orders for his army commander to capture the city of Ashdod.#20.1 Ashdod: King Sargon II of Assyria captured this Philistine city in 711 b.c. 2About this same time the Lord had told me, “Isaiah, take off everything, including your sandals!” I did this and went around naked and barefoot 3for three years.
Then the Lord said:
What Isaiah has done is a warning to Egypt and Ethiopia.#20.3 Ethiopia: See the note at 11.11. 4Everyone in these two countries will be led away naked and barefoot by the king of Assyria. Young or old, they will be taken prisoner, and Egypt will be disgraced. 5They will be confused and frustrated, because they depended on Ethiopia and bragged about Egypt. 6When this happens, the people who live along the coast#20.6 people … coast: Probably the Philistines. will say, “Look what happened to them! We ran to them for safety, hoping they would protect us from the king of Assyria. But now, there is no escape for us.”
