The Plot to Kill Jesus
1 # For ver. 1, 2, see Matt. 26:2-5; Luke 22:1, 2 It was now two days before #See John 6:4 the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes #John 11:53; See Matt. 21:46were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, 2for they said, “Not during the feast, #Matt. 27:24lest there be an uproar from the people.”
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
3 # For ver. 3-9, see Matt. 26:6-13; John 12:1-8; [Luke 7:37-39] And while he was at #Matt. 21:17; John 11:18Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,#14:3 Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases; see Leviticus 13 as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. 4There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? 5For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii#14:5 A denarius was a day’s wage for a laborer and #[John 13:29] given to the poor.” And they #John 11:33, 38 (Gk.)scolded her. 6But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7For #Deut. 15:11 you always have the poor with you, and whenever #[2 Cor. 9:7] you want, you can do good for them. But #ch. 2:20; See John 7:33you will not always have me. 8#[ch. 12:43; Luke 21:3; 2 Cor. 8:12] She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand #John 19:40for burial. 9And truly, I say to you, wherever #[Matt. 24:14] the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told #Acts 10:4in memory of her.”
Judas to Betray Jesus
10 # For ver. 10, 11, see Matt. 26:14-16; Luke 22:3-6; [John 13:2, 27, 30] Then #ch. 3:19; Matt. 27:3; Acts 1:16; [John 6:71; 12:4]Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, #ch. 3:19; Matt. 27:3; Acts 1:16; [John 6:71; 12:4]went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. 11And when they heard it, they were glad and promised to give him money. And he sought an opportunity to #See Matt. 20:18, 19betray him.
The Passover with the Disciples
12 # For ver. 12-16, see Matt. 26:17-19; Luke 22:7-13 And on #Ex. 12:18 the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they #1 Cor. 5:7sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 13And he sent #[ch. 11:1]two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him, 14and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, #See John 11:28 ‘The Teacher says, Where is #Luke 2:7 (Gk.)my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 15And he will show you #[Acts 1:13]a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.” 16And the disciples set out and went to the city and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
17 # For ver. 17-21, see Matt. 26:20-24; [Luke 22:14, 21-23; John 13:21-26] And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. 18And as they were reclining at table and eating, #[John 6:70, 71] Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, #[Ps. 41:9; John 13:18]one who is eating with me.” 19They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?” 20He said to them, “It is #ver. 10 one of the twelve, #[See ver. 18 above]one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. 21For the Son of Man goes #ver. 49; ch. 9:12; Luke 18:31; 24:25, 27, 46; Acts 17:2, 3; 26:22, 23; 1 Cor. 15:3; 1 Pet. 1:10, 11 as it is written of him, but #Matt. 18:7 woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! #[See John 17:12]It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”
Institution of the Lord’s Supper

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial
26 # For ver. 26-31, see Matt. 26:30-35 And when they had sung a hymn, #Luke 22:39; John 18:1 they went out to #See Matt. 21:1the Mount of Olives. 27And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will #Cited from Zech. 13:7; [John 16:32]strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ 28But after I am raised up, #ch. 16:7; Matt. 28:7, 10, 16I will go before you to Galilee.” 29#[Luke 22:31, 33]Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.” 30And #Luke 22:34; John 13:38 Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before #ver. 68, 72the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” 31But #John 13:37he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33And he took with him #ch. 5:37; 9:2 Peter and James and John, and began #[Matt. 17:23]to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34And he said to them, #[Ps. 42:5, 6; John 12:27] “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and #See Matt. 24:42watch.”#14:34 Or keep awake; also verses 37, 38 35And going a little farther, he fell on the ground #Heb. 5:7 and prayed that, if it were possible, #ver. 41; John 12:23, 27; 13:1; 17:1; [Luke 22:53; John 16:4]the hour might pass from him. 36And he said, #Rom. 8:15; Gal. 4:6 “Abba, Father, #See Matt. 19:26 all things are possible for you. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39And again he went away and prayed, #ver. 36saying the same words. 40And again he came and found them sleeping, for #Luke 9:32 their eyes were very heavy, and #[ch. 9:6; Luke 9:33]they did not know what to answer him. 41And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? #[Luke 22:38] It is enough; #See ver. 35 the hour has come. #ch. 9:31; 10:33The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”
Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

Seize him and lead him away under guard.” 45And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, #See John 1:38 “Rabbi!” And he #Luke 7:38, 45; 15:20; Acts 20:37 (Gk.)kissed him. 46And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47But one of those who stood by drew his #[Luke 22:38]sword and struck the servant#14:47 Or bondservant of the high priest and cut off his ear. 48And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? 49#[John 8:2]; [Luke 2:46; John 18:20] Day after day I was with you in the temple #Matt. 21:23; [Matt. 4:23] teaching, and you did not seize me. But #See ver. 21; Matt. 1:22let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” 50#ver. 27; [Ps. 88:8, 18; John 16:32]And they all left him and fled.
A Young Man Flees
51And a young man followed him, with nothing but #ch. 15:46; Judg. 14:12; Prov. 31:24a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, 52but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.
Jesus Before the Council

And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. 54#[See ver. 53 above] And #[John 18:15] Peter had followed him at a distance, #[ver. 68] right into #See Matt. 26:3 the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with #John 7:32; 18:3 the guards and #ver. 67; John 18:18warming himself at the fire. 55Now the chief priests and the whole council#14:55 Greek Sanhedrin were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. 56#Ps. 27:12; 35:11 For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony #[Deut. 17:6; 19:15]did not agree. 57And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, 58#[Acts 6:14] “We heard him say, #ch. 15:29; See John 2:19 ‘I will destroy this temple #Acts 7:48; 17:24; Heb. 9:11, 24 that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, #2 Cor. 5:1not made with hands.’” 59Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. 60And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”#14:60 Or Have you no answer to what these men testify against you? 61But #ch. 15:4, 5; Isa. 53:7; John 19:9 he remained silent and made no answer. #For ver. 61-63, [Luke 22:67-71] Again the high priest asked him, “Are you #ch. 8:29; See Matt. 1:17 the Christ, the Son of #[Rom. 1:25]the Blessed?” 62And Jesus said, “I am, and #See Matt. 16:27; 24:30 you will see the Son of Man #Ps. 110:1; Heb. 1:3; [ch. 16:19]seated at the right hand of Power, and #See Matt. 16:27; 24:30 coming with the clouds of heaven.” 63And the high priest #Num. 14:6; Acts 14:14tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? 64You have heard #Matt. 9:3; John 10:36 his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they #[Luke 23:50, 51] all condemned him as #See Lev. 24:16deserving death. 65#Luke 22:63, 64 And some began #ch. 10:34; 15:19; Isa. 50:6 to spit on him and #[Esth. 7:8] to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him #Matt. 5:39; [Acts 23:2]with blows.
Peter Denies Jesus
66 # For ver. 66-72, see Matt. 26:69-75; Luke 22:55-62; John 18:16-18, 25-27 And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came, 67and seeing Peter #ver. 54warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.” 68But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway#14:68 Or forecourt and #ver. 30, 72the rooster crowed.#14:68 Some manuscripts omit and the rooster crowed 69And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” 70But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” 71But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” 72And immediately the rooster crowed #ver. 68 a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, #ver. 30 “Before the rooster crows twice, you will #[Acts 3:13, 14]deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.#14:72 Or And when he had thought about it, he wept
