The Transfiguration
1 # For ver. 1-8, see Mark 9:2-8; Luke 9:28-36 And after six days Jesus took with him #ch. 26:37; Mark 5:37Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2And he was #[2 Cor. 3:18 (Gk.)] transfigured before them, and #Rev. 1:16; 10:1 his face shone like the sun, and #Dan. 7:9; [ch. 28:3; Ps. 104:2]his clothes became white as light. 3And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for #[Mal. 4:5]Elijah.” 5He was still speaking when, behold, #2 Pet. 1:17; [Ex. 24:15, 16] a bright cloud overshadowed them, and #2 Pet. 1:17; [Ex. 24:15, 16] a voice from the cloud said, #See ch. 3:17 “This is my beloved Son,#17:5 Or my Son, my (or the) Beloved with whom I am well pleased; #Acts 3:22listen to him.” 6When #2 Pet. 1:18 the disciples heard this, #[Gen. 17:3; Ezek. 1:28; Rev. 1:17]they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7But Jesus came and #Dan. 8:18; 10:10, 18 touched them, saying, “Rise, and #ch. 14:27have no fear.” 8And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
9 # For ver. 9-13, see Mark 9:9-13 And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, #See ch. 8:4; 12:16“Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” 10And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say #See ch. 11:14; Mal. 4:5, 6that first Elijah must come?” 11He answered, “Elijah does come, and #Luke 1:16, 17; [Acts 1:6; 3:21]he will restore all things. 12But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but #ch. 14:3, 10 did to him whatever they pleased. #ch. 16:21So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” 13#ch. 16:12Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.
Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon
14 # For ver. 14-19, see Mark 9:14-28; Luke 9:37-42 And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, 15said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has #ch. 4:24seizures and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. 16And I brought him to your disciples, and #[ch. 10:1; Mark 6:7; Luke 10:17]they could not heal him.” 17And Jesus answered, “O faithless and #Phil. 2:15; [John 20:27] twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? #[John 14:9]How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” 18And Jesus #ch. 8:26; Zech. 3:2; Mark 1:25; Luke 4:35, 39; Jude 9 rebuked the demon,#17:18 Greek it and it#17:18 Greek the demon came out of him, and #See ch. 9:22the boy was healed instantly.#17:18 Greek from that hour 19Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20He said to them, #[John 11:40]; See ch. 6:30 “Because of your little faith. For #ch. 21:21, 22; Mark 11:23 truly, I say to you, #Luke 17:6; [ch. 13:31] if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, #ver. 9; [1 Cor. 13:2] you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and #Mark 9:23nothing will be impossible for you.”#17:20 Some manuscripts insert verse 21: But this kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting
Jesus Again Foretells Death, Resurrection
22 # For ver. 22, 23, see Mark 9:30-32; Luke 9:43-45; [ch. 16:21-28; 20:17-19] As they were gathering#17:22 Some manuscripts remained in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, 23and they will kill him, and he will be raised on #See Mark 8:31the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.
The Temple Tax
24 #
Mark 9:33 When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of #Ex. 30:13; 38:26the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the tax?” 25He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, #ch. 18:12; 21:28 “What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or #ch. 22:17, 19; Mark 12:14; Rom. 13:7tax? From their sons or from others?” 26And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. 27However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel.#17:27 Greek stater, a silver coin worth four drachmas or approximately one shekel Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.”

Matthew 17
17
1 AND SIX days after this, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.
2 And His appearance underwent a change in their presence; and His face shone clear and bright like the sun, and His clothing became as white as light.
3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, who kept talking with Him.
4 Then Peter began to speak and said to Jesus, Lord, it is good and delightful that we are here; if You approve, I will put up three booths here–one for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah.
5 While he was still speaking, behold, a shining cloud [composed of light] overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, This is My Son, My Beloved, with Whom I am [and have always been] delighted. Listen to Him! [Ps. 2:7; Isa. 42:1.]
6 When the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were seized with alarm and struck with fear.
7 But Jesus came and touched them and said, Get up, and do not be afraid.
8 And when they raised their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
9 And as they were going down the mountain, Jesus cautioned and commanded them, Do not mention to anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.
10 The disciples asked Him, Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?
11 He replied, Elijah does come and will get everything restored and ready.
12 But I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know or recognize him, but did to him as they liked. So also the Son of Man is going to be treated and suffer at their hands.
13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them about John the Baptist. [Mal. 4:5.]
14 And when they approached the multitude, a man came up to Him, kneeling before Him and saying,
15 Lord, do pity and have mercy on my son, for he has epilepsy (is moonstruck) and he suffers terribly; for frequently he falls into the fire and many times into the water.
16 And I brought him to Your disciples, and they were not able to cure him.
17 And Jesus answered, O you unbelieving (warped, wayward, rebellious) and thoroughly perverse generation! How long am I to remain with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to Me.
18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly.
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus and asked privately, Why could we not drive it out?
20 He said to them, Because of the littleness of your faith [that is, your lack of firmly relying trust]. For truly I say to you, if you have faith [that is living] like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, Move from here to yonder place, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
21 But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.
22 When they were going about here and there in Galilee, Jesus said to them, The Son of Man is going to be turned over into the hands of men.
23 And they will kill Him, and He will be raised [to life] again on the third day. And they were deeply and exceedingly grieved and distressed.
24 When they arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the half shekel [the temple tax] went up to Peter and said, Does not your Teacher pay the half shekel? [Exod. 30:13; 38:26.]
25 He answered, Yes. And when he came home, Jesus spoke to him [about it] first, saying, What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly rulers collect duties or tribute–from their own sons or from others not of their own family?
26 And when Peter said, From other people not of their own family, Jesus said to him, Then the sons are exempt.
27 However, in order not to give offense and cause them to stumble [that is, to cause them to judge unfavorably and unjustly] go down to the sea and throw in a hook. Take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find there a shekel. Take it and give it to them to pay the temple tax for Me and for yourself.
