The Pharisees and Sadducees Demand Signs
1 # For ver. 1-12, see Mark 8:11-21 And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and #John 8:6 to test him #1 Cor. 1:22; See ch. 12:38 they asked him to show them #Luke 11:16; 21:11a sign from heaven. 2He answered them,#16:2 Some manuscripts omit the following words to the end of verse 3 #[Luke 12:54, 55]“When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ #Luke 12:56 You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret #[ch. 12:28; Luke 19:44]the signs of the times. 4#See ch. 12:39 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So #ch. 4:13; 21:17he left them and departed.
The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6Jesus said to them, “Watch and #Luke 12:1 beware of #1 Cor. 5:6-8; Gal. 5:9the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” 8But #ch. 26:10 Jesus, aware of this, said, #See ch. 6:30“O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 9#ch. 15:16 Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember #ch. 14:17-21the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10Or #ch. 15:34-38the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? #[See ver. 6 above]Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12#ch. 17:13 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of #[ch. 5:20; 23:3]the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ
13 # For ver. 13-16, see Mark 8:27-29; Luke 9:18-20 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14And they said, “Some say #ch. 14:2; Mark 6:14; Luke 9:7 John the Baptist, others say #Mark 6:15; Luke 9:8; [ch. 17:10; Mark 9:11; John 1:21]Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16Simon Peter replied, #John 11:27 “You are #See ch. 1:17 the Christ, #See ch. 14:33 the Son of #Deut. 5:26; Josh. 3:10; Ps. 42:2; Jer. 10:10; Dan. 6:20; Hos. 1:10; Acts 14:15; 2 Cor. 3:3; 1 Tim. 4:10the living God.” 17And Jesus answered him, #[ch. 13:16] “Blessed are you, #[John 1:42; 21:15-17] Simon Bar-Jonah! For #1 Cor. 15:50; Gal. 1:16 (Gk.); Eph. 6:12; Heb. 2:14 flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, #1 Cor. 2:10; 12:3; [ch. 11:25; John 6:45]but my Father who is in heaven. 18And I tell you, #[ch. 10:2; John 1:42] you are Peter, and #Eph. 2:20; Rev. 21:14; [ch. 7:24] on this rock#16:18 The Greek words for Peter and rock sound similar I will build my church, and #Job 38:17; Isa. 38:10 the gates of #See ch. 11:23hell#16:18 Greek the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19I will give you #[Isa. 22:22; Rev. 1:18; 3:7] the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and #[ch. 18:18; John 20:23]whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed#16:19 Or shall have been bound . . . shall have been loosed in heaven.” 20#Mark 8:30; Luke 9:21; [ch. 17:9]; See ch. 12:16Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
21 # For ver. 21-28, see Mark 8:31–9:1; Luke 9:22-27; [ch. 17:12, 22, 23; 20:17-19] From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that #ch. 20:18; [Luke 13:33] he must go to Jerusalem and #ch. 17:12, 22, 23; Luke 24:7 suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on #See ch. 27:63; John 2:19the third day be raised. 22And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord!#16:22 Or “[May God be] merciful to you, Lord!” This shall never happen to you.” 23But he turned and said to Peter, #[ch. 4:10] “Get behind me, Satan! You are #See ch. 13:41 a hindrance#16:23 Greek stumbling block to me. For you #Rom. 8:5; Phil. 3:19; Col. 3:2; [Phil. 2:5]are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”
Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus
24Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him #[2 Tim. 2:12, 13] deny himself and #See ch. 10:38, 39take up his cross and follow me. 25For #[See ver. 24 above]whoever would save his life#16:25 The same Greek word can mean either soul or life, depending on the context; twice in this verse and twice in verse 26 will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26For #[Luke 12:20] what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or #[Ps. 49:7, 8]what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27#ch. 24:30; 25:31; 26:64; Dan. 7:10, 13; Zech. 14:5; John 1:51; Acts 1:11; 1 Thess. 1:10; 4:16; Jude 14; Rev. 1:7; [Deut. 33:2] For the Son of Man is going to come with #ch. 13:41 his angels in the glory of his Father, and #Rom. 2:6; 14:12; 2 Cor. 5:10; Heb. 9:27; 1 Pet. 1:17; Rev. 2:23; 20:12; 22:12; See Acts 10:42; 1 Cor. 3:8then he will repay each person according to what he has done. 28Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not #John 8:52; Heb. 2:9 taste death #[ch. 10:23; 23:36; 24:34] until they see the Son of Man #Luke 23:42coming in his kingdom.”

The Leaders Ask for a Miracle
1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus, wanting to trick him. So they asked him to show them a miracle from God.
2Jesus answered, “At sunset you say we will have good weather, because the sky is red. 3And in the morning you say that it will be a rainy day, because the sky is dark and red. You see these signs in the sky and know what they mean. In the same way, you see the things that I am doing now, but you don’t know their meaning. 4Evil and sinful people ask for a miracle as a sign, but they will not be given any sign, except the sign of Jonah.” Then Jesus left them and went away.
Guard Against Wrong Teachings
5Jesus’ followers went across the lake, but they had forgotten to bring bread. 6Jesus said to them, “Be careful! Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
7His followers discussed the meaning of this, saying, “He said this because we forgot to bring bread.”
8Knowing what they were talking about, Jesus asked them, “Why are you talking about not having bread? Your faith is small. 9Do you still not understand? Remember the five loaves of bread that fed the five thousand? And remember that you filled many baskets with the leftovers? 10Or the seven loaves of bread that fed the four thousand and the many baskets you filled then also? 11I was not talking to you about bread. Why don’t you understand that? I am telling you to beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” 12Then the followers understood that Jesus was not telling them to beware of the yeast used in bread but to beware of the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
Peter Says Jesus Is the Christ
13When Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his followers, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14They answered, “Some say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah, and still others say you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15Then Jesus asked them, “And who do you say I am?”
16Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17Jesus answered, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because no person taught you that. My Father in heaven showed you who I am. 18So I tell you, you are Peter. On this rock I will build my church, and the power of death will not be able to defeat it. 19I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; the things you don’t allow on earth will be the things that God does not allow, and the things you allow on earth will be the things that God allows.” 20Then Jesus warned his followers not to tell anyone he was the Christ.
Jesus Says that He Must Die
21From that time on Jesus began telling his followers that he must go to Jerusalem, where the Jewish elders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law would make him suffer many things. He told them he must be killed and then be raised from the dead on the third day.
22Peter took Jesus aside and told him not to talk like that. He said, “God save you from those things, Lord! Those things will never happen to you!”
23Then Jesus said to Peter, “Go away from me, Satan! You are not helping me! You don’t care about the things of God, but only about the things people think are important.”
24Then Jesus said to his followers, “If people want to follow me, they must give up the things they want. They must be willing even to give up their lives to follow me. 25Those who want to save their lives will give up true life, and those who give up their lives for me will have true life. 26It is worthless to have the whole world if they lose their souls. They could never pay enough to buy back their souls. 27The Son of Man will come again with his Father’s glory and with his angels. At that time, he will reward them for what they have done. 28I tell you the truth, some people standing here will see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom before they die.”
