Isaiah 53

53
1 # Cited John 12:38; Rom. 10:16 Who has believed what he has heard from us?#53:1 Or Who has believed what we have heard?
And to whom has #See ch. 51:9the arm of the Lord been revealed?
2For he grew up before him like a young plant,
# ch. 11:1 and like a root out of dry ground;
# [ch. 52:14] he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 # ch. 49:7; [Ps. 22:6; Mark 9:12] He was despised and rejected#53:3 Or forsaken by men,
a man of sorrows#53:3 Or pains; also verse 4 and acquainted with#53:3 Or and knowing grief;#53:3 Or sickness; also verse 4
and as one from whom men hide their faces#53:3 Or as one who hides his face from us
he was despised, and #[John 1:10, 11]we esteemed him not.
4 # [Matt. 8:17] Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
# Ps. 69:26 smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 # [Rom. 4:25] But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
# Cited 1 Pet. 2:24 and with his wounds we are healed.
6 # Cited 1 Pet. 2:25; [Jer. 50:6, 17] All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
# 2 Cor. 5:21; [ver. 10; Col. 2:14] and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
7He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
# Matt. 26:63; Mark 14:61; John 19:9; 1 Pet. 2:23 yet he opened not his mouth;
# Cited Acts 8:32 like a #[Jer. 11:19]lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so he opened not his mouth.
8By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
and as for his generation, #ch. 57:1who considered
that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people?
9And they made his grave with the wicked
# Matt. 27:57, 60 and with a rich man in his death,
although #Cited 1 Pet. 2:22; [Heb. 4:15; 1 John 3:5]he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth.
10Yet #[ver. 4] it was the will of the Lord to crush him;
he has put him to grief;#53:10 Or he has made him sick
# [ver. 6] when his soul makes#53:10 Or when you make his soul an offering for guilt,
he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
# [ch. 44:28] the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
11Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see#53:11 Masoretic Text; Dead Sea Scroll he shall see light and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall #[1 John 2:1] the righteous one, my servant,
# Acts 13:39; Rom. 5:18, 19 make many to be accounted righteous,
# [ver. 5] and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 # ch. 52:13; [Phil. 2:9] Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,#53:12 Or with the great
# [Col. 2:15] and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,#53:12 Or with the numerous
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
# ver. 6, 8, 10 yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.
