Judgment on Judah and Jerusalem
1For behold, the #ch. 1:24 Lord God of hosts
is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah
support and supply,#3:1 Hebrew staff
all #Lev. 26:26; Ezek. 4:16support of bread,
and all support of water;
2 #
2 Kgs. 24:14; Ezek. 17:13, 14 the mighty man and the soldier,
the judge and the prophet,
the diviner and the elder,
3the captain of fifty
and the man of rank,
the counselor and the skillful magician
and the expert in charms.
4 # ver. 12; Eccles. 10:16 And I will make boys their princes,
and infants#3:4 Or caprice shall rule over them.
5 # See Mic. 7:3-6 And the people will oppress one another,
every one his fellow
and every one his neighbor;
the youth will be insolent to the elder,
and the despised to the honorable.
6For #ch. 4:1a man will take hold of his brother
in the house of his father, saying:
“You have a cloak;
you shall be our leader,
and this heap of ruins
shall be under your rule”;
7in that day he will speak out, saying:
“I will not be a #[ch. 1:6]healer;#3:7 Hebrew binder of wounds
in my house there is neither bread nor cloak;
you shall not make me
leader of the people.”
8For Jerusalem has stumbled,
and Judah has fallen,
because their #See Ps. 73:9-11 speech and their deeds are against the Lord,
# ch. 65:3 defying his glorious presence.#3:8 Hebrew the eyes of his glory
9For the look on their faces bears witness against them;
they proclaim their sin #Gen. 13:13; 18:20; Ezek. 16:46, 48, 49 like Sodom;
they do not hide it.
Woe to them!
# [Rom. 6:23] For they have brought evil on themselves.
10 #
Eccles. 8:12; See Deut. 28:1-14 Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them,
#
Ps. 128:2
for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds.
11 #
Eccles. 8:13; See Deut. 28:15-68 Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him,
for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him.
12My people—#ver. 4 infants are their oppressors,
and women rule over them.
O my people, #See ch. 28:14-22your guides mislead you
and they have swallowed up#3:12 Or they have confused the course of your paths.
13The Lord #Ps. 7:6; Hos. 4:1has taken his place to contend;
he stands to judge peoples.
14The Lord will enter into judgment
with the #Mic. 3:1 elders and princes of his people:
“It is you who #Ps. 14:4 have devoured#3:14 Or grazed over; compare Exodus 22:5 the vineyard,
#
Amos 3:10
the spoil of the poor is in your houses.
15What do you mean by #[Ps. 94:5]crushing my people,
by grinding the face of the poor?”
declares the Lord God of hosts.
16The Lord said:
# See ch. 32:9-11 Because #ch. 4:4; Song 3:11 the daughters of Zion are haughty
and walk with outstretched necks,
glancing wantonly with their eyes,
mincing along as they go,
# ver. 18 tinkling with their feet,
17therefore the Lord #[Deut. 28:60] will strike with a scab
the heads of #[See ver. 16 above]the daughters of Zion,
and the Lord will lay bare their secret parts.
18In that day the Lord will take away #ver. 16 the finery of the anklets, the #[1 Pet. 3:3] headbands, and the #Judg. 8:21, 26crescents; 19the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; 20the #Ex. 39:28; Ezek. 24:17headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; 21the signet rings and #Gen. 24:47; Ezek. 16:12nose rings; 22the #[Luke 15:22]festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; 23the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils.
24Instead of #[Esth. 2:12] perfume there will be rottenness;
and instead of a #Prov. 31:24 belt, a rope;
and instead of #1 Pet. 3:3 well-set hair, #ch. 15:2; 22:12; Ezek. 27:31; Amos 8:10; Mic. 1:16 baldness;
and instead of a rich robe, a #ch. 15:3; Gen. 37:34; Lam. 2:10 skirt of sackcloth;
and #Lev. 19:28branding instead of beauty.
25Your men shall fall by the sword
and your mighty men in battle.
26And #Jer. 14:2; Lam. 1:4 her gates shall lament and mourn;
empty, she shall #Job 2:13; Lam. 2:10sit on the ground.

Judah’s Leaders Judged
1Note this: The Lord God of Armies
is about to remove from Jerusalem and from Judah
every kind of security:
the entire supply of bread and water,
2heroes and warriors,#2Kg 24:14; Ezk 17:13–14
judges and prophets,
fortune-tellers and elders,
3commanders of fifty and dignitaries,
counselors, cunning magicians,#3:3 Or skilled craftsmen and necromancers.#3:3 Or mediums
4“I will make youths their leaders,#Ec 10:16
and unstable rulers#3:4 Or mischief-makers will govern them.”
5The people will oppress one another,#Mc 7:3–6
man against man, neighbor against neighbor;
the young will act arrogantly toward the old,
and the worthless toward the honorable.
6A man will even seize his brother
in his father’s house, saying,
“You have a cloak — you be our leader!
This heap of rubble will be under your control.”
7On that day he will cry out, saying,
“I’m not a healer.
I don’t even have food or clothing in my house.
Don’t make me the leader of the people!”
8For Jerusalem has stumbled
and Judah has fallen
because they have spoken and acted against the Lord,#Ps 73:9–11
defying his glorious presence.#Nm 14:22–23; Is 43:7; 48:11; 59:19
9The look on their faces testifies against them,
and like Sodom,#Is 1:9–10; 13:19 they flaunt their sin;
they do not conceal it.
Woe to them,
for they have brought disaster on themselves.#Rm 6:23
10Tell the righteous that it will go well for them,
for they will eat the fruit of their labor.
11Woe to the wicked — it will go badly for them,
for what they have done will be done to them.
12Youths oppress my people,#Is 3:4
and women rule over them.
My people, your leaders mislead you;
they confuse the direction of your paths.#Is 28:14–22
13The Lord rises to argue the case
and stands to judge the people.#Ps 7:6; Hs 4:1
14The Lord brings this charge
against the elders and leaders of his people:#Mc 3:1–3
“You have devastated the vineyard.
The plunder from the poor is in your houses.#Ezk 18:10–18; 33:15
15Why do you crush my people
and grind the faces of the poor?”
This is the declaration of the Lord God of Armies.
Jerusalem’s Women Judged
16The Lord also says:
Because the daughters of Zion are haughty,#Is 32:9–15; 1Pt 3:3–4
walking with heads held high
and seductive eyes,
prancing along,
jingling their ankle bracelets,
17the Lord will put scabs on the heads
of the daughters of Zion,
and the Lord will shave their foreheads bare.
18On that day#Is 27:12 the Lord will strip their finery: ankle bracelets, headbands, crescents,#Jdg 8:21,26 19pendants, bracelets, veils, 20headdresses, ankle jewelry, sashes, perfume bottles, amulets,#Ezk 24:17 21signet rings, nose rings,#Gn 24:47; Ezk 16:12 22festive robes, capes, cloaks, purses, 23garments, linen clothes, turbans, and shawls.
24Instead of perfume there will be a stench;
instead of a belt, a rope;
instead of beautifully styled hair,#1Pt 3:3 baldness;#Is 15:2; 22:12; Ezk 27:31; Am 8:10; Mc 1:16
instead of fine clothes, sackcloth;#Gn 37:34; Is 15:3; Jr 48:36–38; Lm 2:10
instead of beauty, branding.#3:24 DSS read shame
25Your men will fall by the sword,
your warriors in battle.
26Then her gates#Jr 14:2; Lm 1:4 will lament and mourn;
deserted, she will sit on the ground.#Jb 2:13; Is 47:1; Lm 2:10
