An Oracle Concerning Moab
1An #[See ch. 14:28 above] oracle concerning #See Jer. 48; Ezek. 25:8-11; Amos 2:1-3; Zeph. 2:8, 9 Moab.
Because #Num. 21:15, 28 Ar of Moab is laid waste in a night,
Moab is undone;
because #[ch. 16:7, 11]Kir of Moab is laid waste in a night,
Moab is undone.
2He has gone up to the temple,#15:2 Hebrew the house and to #Num. 21:30 Dibon,
to the high places#15:2 Or temple, even Dibon to the high places to weep;
over #Deut. 34:1 Nebo and over #Num. 21:30 Medeba
Moab #ch. 13:6 wails.
On every head is #See ch. 3:24baldness;
every beard is shorn;
3in the streets they wear sackcloth;
on the housetops and in the squares
everyone wails and melts in tears.
4 #
Num. 32:37 Heshbon and #Num. 32:37 Elealeh cry out;
their voice is heard as far as #Jer. 48:34Jahaz;
therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud;
his soul trembles.
5My heart cries out for Moab;
her fugitives flee to Zoar,
to #[See ver. 4 above] Eglath-shelishiyah.
For at the #Jer. 48:5ascent of Luhith
they go up weeping;
on the road to #Jer. 48:5Horonaim
they raise a cry of destruction;
6the waters of #[Num. 32:36]Nimrim
are a desolation;
the grass is withered, the vegetation fails,
the greenery is no more.
7 #
Jer. 48:36
Therefore the abundance they have gained
and what they have laid up
they carry away
over the Brook of the Willows.
8For a cry has gone
around the land of Moab;
her wailing reaches to Eglaim;
her wailing reaches to Beer-elim.
9For the waters of #[ver. 2] Dibon#15:9 Dead Sea Scroll, Vulgate (compare Syriac); Masoretic Text Dimon; twice in this verse are full of blood;
for I will bring upon Dibon even more,
# [2 Kgs. 17:25; Jer. 50:17] a lion for those of Moab who escape,
for the remnant of the land.

Judgment on Moab
1The [mournful, inspired] oracle (#I.e. an urgent message the prophet is under compulsion to proclaim.a burden to be carried) concerning Moab:
Because in a night Ar of Moab is devastated and ruined;
Because in a night Kir of Moab is devastated and ruined.
2They have gone up to the temple and to Dibon, to the high places to weep.
Moab wails over Nebo and over Medeba;
Everyone’s head is shaved, and every beard is cut off [in mourning].
3In their streets they have wrapped themselves with sackcloth;
On their [flat] housetops and in their open squares
Everyone is wailing, dissolved in tears.
4Heshbon and Elealeh [cities claimed by Moab] cry out;
Their voice is heard as far as Jahaz.
Therefore the armed men of Moab cry out;
Moab’s soul trembles within him.
5My heart cries out for Moab;
His fugitives are [fleeing] as far as Zoar and Eglath-shelishiyah.
For they go up the ascent of Luhith weeping;
For on the road to Horonaim they raise a cry of distress over their destruction.
6For the waters of Nimrim are desolate.
Indeed the grass is withered, the new growth dies;
There is no green thing.
7Therefore the abundance which they have acquired and stored away
They carry off over the Brook of the Willows.
8For the cry of distress has echoed around the territory of Moab;
The wailing goes as far as Eglaim and the mournful cry to Beer-elim.
9For the waters of Dimon are full of blood;
Yet I will bring even more woes on Dimon—
A lion upon those of Moab who escape and upon the remnant of the land.
