St Matthew 8

1AND when he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him:
2And behold a leper came and adored him, saying: Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
3And Jesus stretching forth his hand, touched him, saying: I will, be thou made clean. And forthwith his leprosy was cleansed.
4And Jesus saith to him: See thou tell no man: but go, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift which Moses commanded for a testimony unto them.
5And when he had entered into Capharnaum, there came to him a centurion, beseeching him,
6And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, and is grieviously tormented.
7And Jesus saith to him: I will come and heal him.
8And the centurion making answer, said: Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof: but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed.
9For I also am a man subject to authority, having under me soldiers; and I say to this, Go, and he goeth, and to another, Come, and he cometh, and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
10And Jesus hearing this, marvelled; and said to them that followed him: Amen I say to you, I have not found so great faith in Israel.
11And I say to you that many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven:
12But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into the exterior darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
13And Jesus said to the centurion: Go, and as thou hast believed, so be it done to thee. And the servant was healed at the same hour.
14And when Jesus was come into Peter's house, he saw his wife's mother lying, and sick of a fever:
15And he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she arose and ministered to them.
16And when evening was come, they brought to him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word: and all that were sick he healed:
17That it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet Isaias, saying: He took our infirmities, and bore our diseases.
18And Jesus seeing great multitudes about him, gave orders to pass over the water.
19And a certain scribe came and said to him: Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou shalt go.
20And Jesus saith to him: The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests: but the son of man hath not where to lay his head.
21And another of his disciples said to him: Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
22But Jesus said to him: Follow me, and let the dead bury their dead.
23And when he entered into the boat, his disciples followed him:
24And behold a great tempest arose in the sea, so that the boat was covered with waves, but he was asleep.
25And they came to him, and awaked him, saying: Lord, save us, we perish.
26And Jesus saith to them: Why are you fearful, O ye of little faith? Then rising up he commanded the winds, and the sea, and there came a great calm.
27But the men wondered, saying: What manner of man is this, for the winds and the sea obey him?
28And when he was come on the other side of the water, into the country of the Gerasens, there met him two that were possessed with devils, coming out of the sepulchres, exceeding fierce, so that none could pass by that way.
29And behold they cried out, saying: What have we to do with thee, Jesus Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?
30And there was, not far from them, an herd of many swine feeding.
31And the devils besought him, saying: If thou cast us out hence, send us into the herd of swine.
32And he said to them: Go. But they going out went into the swine, and behold the whole herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea: and they perished in the waters.
33And they that kept them fled: and coming into the city, told every thing, and concerning them that had been possessed by the devils.
34And behold the whole city went out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart from their coasts.

The Leper’s Prayer
(Leviticus 14:1–32; Mark 1:40–45; Luke 5:12–16)
1When Jesus came down from the mountain, large crowds followed Him. 2Suddenly a leper #8:2 A leper was one afflicted with a skin disease. See Leviticus 13. came and knelt before Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
3Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
4Then Jesus instructed him, “See that you don’t tell anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift prescribed by Moses, as a testimony to them.”#8:4 See Leviticus 14:1–32.
The Faith of the Centurion
(Luke 7:1–10; John 4:43–54)
5When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came and pleaded with Him, 6“Lord, my servant #8:6 Or child; also in verse 13 lies at home, paralyzed and in terrible agony.”
7“I will go and heal him,” Jesus replied.
8The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have You come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell one to go, and he goes; and another to come, and he comes. I tell my servant to do something, and he does it.”
10When Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those following Him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11I say to you that many will come from the east and the west to share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
13Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! As you have believed, so will it be done for you.” And his servant was healed at that very hour.
Jesus Heals at Peter’s House
(Mark 1:29–34; Luke 4:38–41)
14When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, He saw Peter’s mother-in-law sick in bed with a fever. 15So He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve them.
16When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Jesus, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. 17This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
“He took on our infirmities
and carried our diseases.”#8:17 Isaiah 53:4
The Cost of Discipleship
(Luke 9:57–62; Luke 14:25–33; John 6:59–66)
18When Jesus saw a large crowd around Him, He gave orders to cross to the other side of the sea.#8:18 That is, the Sea of Galilee; Greek to the other side 19And one of the scribes came to Him and said, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.”
20Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.”
21Another of His disciples requested, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
22But Jesus told him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”
Jesus Calms the Storm
(Psalms 107:1–43; Mark 4:35–41; Luke 8:22–25)
23When He got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was engulfed by the waves; but Jesus was sleeping. 25The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
26“You of little faith,” Jesus replied, “why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and it was perfectly calm.
27The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the sea obey Him!”
The Demons and the Pigs
(Mark 5:1–20; Luke 8:26–39)
28When Jesus arrived on the other side in the region of the Gadarenes,#8:28 BYZ, TR, and GOC Gergesenes; other manuscripts Gerasenes He was met by two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs. They were so violent that no one could pass that way.
29“What do You want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have You come here to torture us before the appointed time?”
30In the distance a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31So the demons begged Jesus, “If You drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.”
32“Go!” He told them. So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and died in the waters.
33Those tending the pigs ran off into the town and reported all this, including the account of the demon-possessed men. 34Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to leave their region.
