Isaias (Isaiah) 26
26
1IN that day shall this canticle be sung the land of Juda. Sion, the city of our strength: a Saviour, a wall and a bulwark shall be set therein.
2Open ye the gates: and let the just nation, that keepeth the truth, enter in.
3The old error is passed away, thou wilt keep peace: peace, because we have hoped in thee.
4You have hoped in the Lord for evermore: in the Lord God, mighty for ever.
5For he shall bring down them that dwell on high: the high city he shall lay low. He shall bring it down even to the ground: he shall pull it down even to the dust.
6The foot shall tread it down: the feet of the poor, the steps of the needy.
7The way of the just is right: the path of the just is right to walk in.
8And in the way of thy judgments, O Lord, we have patiently waited for thee: thy name, and thy remembrance are the desire of the soul.
9My soul hath desired thee in the night: yea, and with my spirit within me in the morning early I will watch to thee. When thou shalt do thy judgments on the earth, the inhabitants of the world shall learn justice.
10Let us have pity on the wicked: but he will not learn justice. In the land of the saints he hath done wicked things: and he shall not see the glory of the Lord.
11Lord, let thy hand be exalted, and let them not see: let the envious people see, and be confounded: and let fire devour thy enemies.
12Lord, thou wilt give us peace: for thou hast wrought all our works for us.
13O Lord our God, other lords besides thee have had dominion over us: only in thee let us remember thy name.
14Let not the dead live, let not the giants rise again: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and best destroyed all their memory.
15Thou hast been favourable to the nation, O Lord: thou hast been favourable to the nation. Art thou glorified? Thou hast removed all the ends of the earth far off.
16Lord, they have sought after thee in distress: in the tribulation of murmuring thy instruction was with them.
17As a woman with child, when she draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain and crieth out in her pangs: so are we become in thy presence, O Lord.
18We have conceived and been as it were in labour, and have brought forth wind. We have not wrought salvation on the earth: therefore the inhabitants of the earth have not fallen.
19Thy dead men shall live, my slain shall rise again. Awake, and give praise, ye that dwell in the dust. For thy dew is the dew of the light: and the land of the giants thou shalt pull down into ruin.
20Go, my people, enter into thy chambers, shut thy doors upon thee, hide thyself a little for a moment, until the indignation pass away.
21For, behold, the Lord will come out of his place, to visit the iniquity of the inhabitant of the earth against him: and the earth shall disclose her blood and shall cover her slain no more.

The Song of Judah
1On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:
We have a strong city.
Salvation is established as walls and ramparts.#Is 60:18
2Open the gates
so a righteous nation can come in —
one that remains faithful.
3You will keep the mind that is dependent on you
in perfect peace,#Is 26:12; 27:5; 57:19; 66:12
for it is trusting in you.
4Trust in the Lord forever,
because in the Lord, the Lord himself, is an everlasting rock!#Ps 73:26; Is 17:10; 30:29; 44:8
5For he has humbled those who live in lofty places —
an inaccessible city.#Is 25:10–12
He brings it down; he brings it down to the ground;
he throws it to the dust.
6Feet trample it,
the feet of the humble,
the steps of the poor.
God’s People Vindicated
7The path of the righteous is level;#Ps 27:11
you clear a straight path for the righteous.
8Yes, Lord, we wait for you
in the path of your judgments.
Our desire is for your name and renown.#Ex 3:15
9I long for you in the night;#Ps 77:2; 84:2; 119:20,81
yes, my spirit within me diligently seeks you,
for when your judgments are in the land,
the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
10But if the wicked man is shown favor,
he does not learn righteousness.
In a righteous land he acts unjustly
and does not see the majesty of the Lord.
11 Lord, your hand is lifted up to take action,
but they do not see it.
Let them see your zeal for your people
and be put to shame.
Let fire consume your adversaries.
12 Lord, you will establish peace for us,
for you have also done all our work for us.
13 Lord our God, lords other than you have owned#26:13 Or married us,
but we remember your name alone.#Jn 10:25
14The dead do not live;
departed spirits do not rise up.
Indeed, you have punished and destroyed them;
you have wiped out all memory of them.#Jb 18:17; Ps 9:6
15You have added to the nation, Lord.#Is 9:3
You have added to the nation; you are honored.
You have expanded all the borders of the land.#Is 33:17; 54:2–3
16 Lord, they went to you in their distress;#Is 37:3; Hs 5:15
they poured out whispered prayers
because your discipline fell on them.#26:16 Hb obscure
17As a pregnant woman about to give birth
writhes and cries out in her pains,#Is 13:8
so we were before you, Lord.
18We became pregnant, we writhed in pain;
we gave birth to wind.
We have won no victories on earth,
and the earth’s inhabitants have not fallen.
19Your dead will live; their bodies#26:19 Lit live; my body they will rise.#Is 25:8; Ezk 37:1–14; Dn 12:2; Hs 13:14; Mt 11:5; Lk 7:22; Jn 8:51
Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust!
For you will be covered with the morning dew,#26:19 Lit For your dew is a dew of lights
and the earth will bring out the departed spirits.
20Go, my people, enter your rooms
and close your doors behind you.
Hide for a little while until the wrath has passed.#Is 10:5,25; 13:5; 34:2; 66:14
21For look, the Lord is coming from his place#Mc 1:3
to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.#Is 13:11
The earth will reveal the blood shed on it
and will no longer conceal her slain.
