Isaiah 24
24
Judgment upon the World and the Lord’s Enthronement on Mount Zion#The world is about to be shaken by a devastating judgment that will overthrow both the human and divine enemies of the Lord, who will then reign in glory over his people on Mount Zion.
1See! The Lord is about to empty the earth and lay it waste;
he will twist its surface,
and scatter its inhabitants:#Is 13:9; Na 2:3, 11.
2People and priest shall fare alike:
servant and master,
Maid and mistress,
buyer and seller,
Lender and borrower,
creditor and debtor.#Hos 4:9.
3The earth shall be utterly laid waste, utterly stripped,
for the Lord has decreed this word.
4The earth mourns and fades,
the world languishes and fades;
both heaven and earth languish.#Is 33:9.
5The earth is polluted because of its inhabitants,
for they have transgressed laws, violated statutes,
broken the ancient covenant.#Ancient covenant: God’s commandments to all humankind (cf. Gn 9:4–6). #Nm 35:33; Hos 4:2–3.
6Therefore a curse devours the earth,
and its inhabitants pay for their guilt;
Therefore they who dwell on earth have dwindled,
and only a few are left.#Lv 26:15–16.
7The new wine mourns, the vine languishes,
all the merry-hearted groan.#Jl 1:10–12.
8Stilled are the cheerful timbrels,
ended the shouts of the jubilant,
stilled the cheerful harp.#Jer 7:34; Hos 2:13.
9They no longer drink wine and sing;
strong brew is bitter to those who drink it.#Am 6:5–7.
10Broken down is the city of chaos,#City of chaos: a godless city which appears several times in chaps. 24–27; see note on 24:1–27:13.
every house is shut against entry.#Is 25:2.
11In the streets they cry out for lack of wine;
all joy has grown dim,
cheer is exiled from the land.#Jer 48:33; Lam 5:14–15.
12In the city nothing remains but desolation,
gates battered into ruins.
13For thus it shall be in the midst of the earth,
among the peoples,
As when an olive tree has been beaten,
as with a gleaning when the vintage is done.#Is 17:6; Mi 7:1.
14These#These: the saved. shall lift up their voice,
they shall sing for joy in the majesty of the Lord,
they shall shout from the western sea:
15“Therefore, in the east
give glory to the Lord!
In the coastlands of the sea,
to the name of the Lord, the God of Israel!”#Is 42:10, 12; Zep 2:11.
16From the end of the earth we hear songs:
“Splendor to the Just One!”
But I said, “I am wasted, wasted away.
Woe is me! The traitors betray;
with treachery have the traitors betrayed!#Is 21:2; 33:1.
17Terror, pit, and trap
for you, inhabitant of the earth!#Jer 48:43.
18One who flees at the sound of terror
will fall into the pit;
One who climbs out of the pit
will be caught in the trap.
For the windows on high are open
and the foundations of the earth shake.#Gn 7:11; Am 5:19.
19The earth will burst asunder,
the earth will be shaken apart,
the earth will be convulsed.
20The earth will reel like a drunkard,
sway like a hut;
Its rebellion will weigh it down;
it will fall, never to rise again.”#Am 5:2.
21On that day the Lord will punish
the host of the heavens#Host of the heavens: the stars, which were often regarded as gods; cf. Dt 4:19; Jer 8:2. in the heavens,
and the kings of the earth on the earth.
22They will be gathered together
like prisoners into a pit;
They will be shut up in a dungeon,
and after many days they will be punished.#2 Pt 2:4; Jude 6.
23Then the moon will blush
and the sun be ashamed,#Is 13:10; Jl 3:3–4; 4:15.
For the Lord of hosts will reign
on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
glorious in the sight of the elders.#The elders: the tradition in Ex 24:9–11 suggests that this refers to the people of God who are to share in the banquet on Mount Zion (Is 25:6–8). #Is 4:5; 60:1–3; Ex 24:9–11; Mi 4:7; Rev 19:4–6.

Judgment on the Earth
1Behold, the Lord #The gradual destruction of the earth, as revealed by God to Isaiah, is prophesied in this passage. He sees both the current and the future tragedies which will befall earth.lays waste to the earth, devastates it, twists and distorts its face and scatters its inhabitants. 2And the people will be like the priest, the servant like his master, the maid like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the creditor like the debtor [as God’s impartial judgment of sin comes on all]. 3The earth will be completely laid waste and utterly pillaged, for the Lord has spoken this word. 4The earth dries up and crumbles away, the world dries out and crumbles away, the exalted of the people of the earth fade away. 5The earth also is polluted #Lit under.by its inhabitants, because they have transgressed laws, violated statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant. 6Therefore, a curse devours the earth, and those who live on it suffer the punishment of their guilt. Therefore, the inhabitants of the earth are burned [under the curse of God’s wrath], and few people are left.
7The new wine mourns,
The vine decays;
All the merry-hearted sigh and groan.
8The mirth of the timbrels (tambourines) ceases,
The noise of those who rejoice ends,
The joy of the harp ceases.
9They do not drink wine with a song;
Strong drink is bitter to those who drink it.
10The city of chaos is broken down;
Every house is shut up so that no one may enter.
11There is an outcry in the streets concerning the wine;
All jubilation is darkened,
The joy of the earth is banished.
12Horrible desolation is left in the city,
And the gate is battered into ruins.
13For so it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples,
As the shaking of an olive tree,
As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over [and only a little of the fruit remains].
14They [who have escaped and remain] raise their voices, they shout for joy;
They rejoice from the [Mediterranean] Sea in the majesty of the Lord.
15Therefore honor and glorify the Lord in the east [in the region of light],
The name of the Lord, the God of Israel [honor His name],
In the coastlands and islands of the [Mediterranean] Sea.
16From the ends of the earth we hear songs, “Glory and honor to the Righteous One,”
But I say, “I waste away, I waste away. Woe to me!
The treacherous deal treacherously,
Indeed, the treacherous deal very treacherously.”
17Terror and pit [of destruction] and snare
Confront you, O inhabitant of the earth.
18Then it will be that he who flees at the sound of terror will fall into the pit,
And he who comes up out of the pit will be caught in the snare;
For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble.
19The earth is broken completely apart,
The earth is split apart,
The earth is shaken violently.
20The earth reels back and forth like a drunkard
And sways like a shack;
Its transgression lies heavily upon it,
And it will fall and not rise again.
21So it will happen in that day
That the Lord will visit and punish the host (fallen angels) of heaven on high,
And the kings of the earth on the earth.
22They will be gathered together
As prisoners [are gathered] in a dungeon;
They will be shut up in prison,
And after many days they will be visited and punished.
23Then the full moon will be embarrassed and the sun ashamed,
For the Lord of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
And His glory and brilliance will shine before His elders.
