The Family History of Jesus the Messiah
(Lk. 3:23b–38)
1This is the family history of Jesus the Messiah. He came from the family of David, who was from the family of Abraham.
2Abraham was the father of Isaac.
Isaac was the father of Jacob.
Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.
3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah. (Their mother was Tamar.)
Perez was the father of Hezron.
Hezron was the father of Ram.
4Ram was the father of Amminadab.
Amminadab was the father of Nahshon.

7Solomon was the father of Rehoboam.
Rehoboam was the father of Abijah.
Abijah was the father of Asa.
8Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat.
Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram.
Jehoram was the father of Uzziah.
9Uzziah was the father of Jotham.
Jotham was the father of Ahaz.
Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.
10Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh.
Manasseh was the father of Amon.
Amon was the father of Josiah.
11Josiah was the grandfather of Jehoiachin#1:11 Jehoiachin Literally, “Jechoniah,” another name for Jehoiachin. and his brothers, who lived during the time that the people were taken away to Babylon.
12After they were taken to Babylon:
Jehoiachin was the father of Shealtiel.
Shealtiel was the grandfather of Zerubbabel.
13Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud.
Abiud was the father of Eliakim.
Eliakim was the father of Azor.
14Azor was the father of Zadok.

Joseph was the husband of Mary,
and Mary was the mother of Jesus, who is called the Messiah.
17So there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David. There were also fourteen generations from David until the people were taken away to Babylon. And there were fourteen more from the time the people were taken to Babylon until the Messiah was born.
The Birth of Jesus the Messiah
(Lk. 2:1–7)
18This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah happened. His mother Mary was engaged to marry Joseph. But before they married, he learned that she was expecting a baby. (She was pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit.) 19Mary’s husband, Joseph, was a good man. He did not want to cause her public disgrace, so he planned to divorce her secretly.
20But after Joseph thought about this, an angel from the Lord came to him in a dream. The angel said, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to accept Mary to be your wife. The baby inside her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son. You will name him Jesus.#1:21 Jesus The name Jesus means “the Lord (YAHWEH) saves.” Give him that name because he will save his people from their sins.”
22All this happened to make clear the full meaning of what the Lord said through the prophet: 23“The virgin will be pregnant and will give birth to a son. They will name him Immanuel.”#Quote from Isa. 7:14. (Immanuel means “God with us.”)
24When Joseph woke up, he did what the Lord’s angel told him to do. He married Mary. 25But Joseph did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And he named him Jesus.

17In all, then, there were fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.
The Birth of Jesus
(Isaiah 7:10–16; Luke 2:1–7)
18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to divorce her quietly.
20But after he had pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus,#1:21 Jesus means The Lord saves. because He will save His people from their sins.”
22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
23“Behold, the virgin will be with child
and will give birth to a son,
and they will call Him Immanuel”#1:23 Literally they will call His name Immanuel; Isaiah 7:14 (see also DSS)
(which means, “God with us”#1:23 See Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 8:8, and Isaiah 8:10.).
24When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and embraced Mary as his wife. 25But he had no union with her #1:25 Literally he did not know her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus.
