Isaiah 55

God Gives “Food” That Really Satisfies
1“All you people who are thirsty, come!
Here is water for you to drink.
Don’t worry if you have no money.
Come, eat and drink until you are full!
You don’t need money.
The milk and wine are free.
2Why waste your money on something that is not real food?
Why should you work for something that does not really satisfy you?
Listen closely to me and you will eat what is good.
You will enjoy the food that satisfies your soul.
3Listen closely to what I say.
Listen to me so that you will live.
I will make an agreement with you that will last forever.
It will be an agreement you can trust, like the one I made with David—
a promise to love him and be loyal to him forever.
4I made David a witness of my power for all nations.
I promised him that he would become a ruler and commander of many nations.”
5There are nations in places you don’t know,
but you will call for them to come.
They don’t know you,
but they will run to you.
This will happen because the Lord, your God, wants it.
It will happen because the Holy One of Israel honors you.
6So you should look for the Lord
before it is too late.
You should call to him now,
while he is near.
7Evil people should stop living evil lives.
They should stop thinking bad thoughts.
They should come to the Lord again,
and he will comfort them.
They should come to our God
because he will freely forgive them.
People Cannot Understand God
8The Lord says, “My thoughts are not like yours.
Your ways are not like mine.
9Just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways,
and my thoughts are higher than your thoughts.
10“Rain and snow fall from the sky
and don’t return until they have watered the ground.
Then the ground causes the plants to sprout and grow,
and they produce seeds for the farmer and food for people to eat.
11In the same way, my words leave my mouth,
and they don’t come back without results.
My words make the things happen that I want to happen.
They succeed in doing what I send them to do.
12“So you will go out from there with joy.
You will be led out in peace.
When you come to the mountains and hills, they will begin singing.
All the trees in the fields will clap their hands.
13Large cypress trees will grow where there were thornbushes.
Myrtle trees will grow where there were weeds.
All this will happen to make the Lord known,
to be a permanent reminder of his goodness and power.”

Isaiah 55
55
LV
1Ho! every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters!
And he that hath no money, come ye, buy, and eat;
Yea, come, buy ye wine and milk,
Without money and without price.
2Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread?
And your labour for that which satisfieth not?
Hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good;
And let your soul delight itself in fatness.
3Incline your ear, and come unto me;
Hear, and your soul shall live;
And I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
Even the sure mercies of David.
4Behold! I have given him for a Witness to the people,
A Prince and a Commander to the people.
5Behold! a nation which thou knewest not shalt thou call,
And a nation which knew not thee, shall run unto thee;
Because of Jehovah thy God,
And because of the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee.
6Seek ye Jehovah while he may be found,
Call ye upon him, while he is near:
7Let the wicked forsake his way,
And the unrighteous man his thoughts;
And let him return unto Jehovah, that he may have compassion upon him;
And unto our God, for he aboundeth in forgiveness.
8For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
Neither are your ways my ways, saith Jehovah.
9For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are my ways higher than your ways,
And my thoughts than your thoughts.
10For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven,
And returneth not thither, but watereth the earth,
And maketh it bring forth and bud;
That it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
11So shall my word be, which goeth forth out of my mouth;
It shall not return unto me void,
But it shall accomplish that which I please,
And shall prosper in that for which I shall have sent it.
12For ye shall go forth with joy,
And be led on with peace:
The mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing,
And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree,
And instead of the nettle shall come up the myrtle;
And it shall be unto Jehovah for a name,
For an everlasting sign which shall not be cut off.
