Jesus’ transformation
1Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and brought them to the top of a very high mountain. 2He was transformed in front of them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light.
3Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Jesus. 4Peter reacted to all of this by saying to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good that we’re here. If you want, I’ll make three shrines: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5While he was still speaking, look, a bright cloud overshadowed them. A voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son whom I dearly love. I am very pleased with him. Listen to him!” 6Hearing this, the disciples fell on their faces, filled with awe.
7But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anybody about the vision until the Human One#17.9 Or Son of Man is raised from the dead.”
10The disciples asked, “Then why do the legal experts say that Elijah must first come?”
11Jesus responded, “Elijah does come first and will restore all things. 12In fact, I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they didn’t know him. But they did to him whatever they wanted. In the same way the Human One#17.12 Or Son of Man is also going to suffer at their hands.” 13Then the disciples realized he was telling them about John the Baptist.
Healing of a boy who was demon-possessed
14When they came to the crowd, a man met Jesus. He knelt before him, 15saying, “Lord, show mercy to my son. He is epileptic and suffers terribly, for he often falls into the fire or the water. 16I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.”
17Jesus answered, “You faithless and crooked generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” 18Then Jesus spoke harshly to the demon. And it came out of the child, who was healed from that time on.
19Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and said, “Why couldn’t we throw the demon out?”
20“Because you have little faith,” he said. “I assure you that if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Go from here to there,’ and it will go. There will be nothing that you can’t do.”#17.20 17:21 is omitted in most critical editions of the Gk New Testament This kind doesn’t come out except through prayer and fasting.
Second prediction of Jesus’ death and resurrection
22When the disciples came together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Human One#17.22 Or Son of Man is about to be delivered over into human hands. 23They will kill him. But he will be raised on the third day.” And they were heartbroken.
Paying the temple tax
24When they came to Capernaum, the people who collected the half-shekel temple tax came to Peter and said, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”
25“Yes,” he said.
But when they came into the house, Jesus spoke to Peter first.“What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect taxes, from their children or from strangers?”
26“From strangers,” he said.
Jesus said to him, “Then the children don’t have to pay. 27But just so we don’t offend them, go to the lake, throw out a fishing line and hook, and take the first fish you catch. When you open its mouth, you will find a shekel coin. Take it and pay the tax for both of us.”

The Transfiguration
(Mk 9.2–13; Lk 9.28–36)
1 #
2 Pet 1.17–18
Six days later Jesus took with him Peter and the brothers James and John and led them up a high mountain where they were alone. 2As they looked on, a change came over Jesus: his face was shining like the sun, and his clothes were dazzling white. 3Then the three disciples saw Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus. 4So Peter spoke up and said to Jesus, “Lord, how good it is that we are here! If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

6When the disciples heard the voice, they were so terrified that they threw themselves face downwards on the ground. 7Jesus came to them and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don't be afraid!” 8So they looked up and saw no one there but Jesus.
9As they came down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Don't tell anyone about this vision you have seen until the Son of Man has been raised from death.”

Mal 4.5
Then the disciples asked Jesus, “Why do the teachers of the Law say that Elijah has to come first?”
11 “Elijah is indeed coming first,” answered Jesus, “and he will get everything ready. 12#Mt 11.14But I tell you that Elijah has already come and people did not recognize him, but treated him just as they pleased. In the same way they will also ill-treat the Son of Man.”
13Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon
(Mk 9.14–29; Lk 9.37–43a)
14When they returned to the crowd, a man came to Jesus, knelt before him, 15and said, “Sir, have mercy on my son! He is an epileptic and has such terrible fits that he often falls in the fire or into water. 16I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”
17Jesus answered, “How unbelieving and wrong you people are! How long must I stay with you? How long do I have to put up with you? Bring the boy here to me!” 18Jesus gave a command to the demon, and it went out of the boy, and at that very moment he was healed.
19Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked him, “Why couldn't we drive the demon out?”

Mt 21.21; Mk 11.23; 1 Cor 13.2 “It was because you haven't enough faith,” answered Jesus. “I assure you that if you have faith as big as a mustard seed, you can say to this hill, ‘Go from here to there!’ and it will go. You could do anything!”#17.20 Some manuscripts add verse 21: But only prayer and fasting can drive this kind out; nothing else can (see Mk 9.29).
Jesus Speaks Again about his Death
(Mk 9.30–32; Lk 9.43b–45)
22When the disciples all came together in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be handed over to people 23who will kill him; but three days later he will be raised to life.”
The disciples became very sad.
Payment of the Temple Tax
24 #
Ex 30.13; 38.26 When Jesus and his disciples came to Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay the temple tax?”
25“Of course,” Peter answered.
When Peter went into the house, Jesus spoke up first, “Simon, what is your opinion? Who pays duties or taxes to the kings of this world? The citizens of the country or the foreigners?”
26“The foreigners,” answered Peter.
“Well, then,” replied Jesus, “that means that the citizens don't have to pay. 27But we don't want to offend these people. So go to the lake and drop in a line. Pull up the first fish you hook, and in its mouth you will find a coin worth enough for my temple tax and yours. Take it and pay them our taxes.”
