Isaiah’s testimonies
1The LORD said to me, “Take a large tablet, and write on it in ordinary letters,#8.1 Heb uncertain For Maher-shalal-hash-baz.#8.1 Or spoil hastens, plunder hurries 2Summon trusted people, Uriah the priest and Zechariah, Jeberechiah’s son, to witness it.”
3I then had sex with the prophetess, and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. Then the LORD said to me, “Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz. 4Before the boy knows how to say ‘my father’ and ‘my mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried away before the king of Assyria.”
5The LORD spoke again to me: 6Since this people has rejected the waters of Shiloah that flow gently, and instead rejoices over#8.6 Or melts before Rezin and Remaliah’s son— 7therefore, look, the Lord is raising up against them the powerful floodwaters of the Euphrates, the king of Assyria and all his glory. It will rise up over all its channels, overflowing all its banks, 8and sweep into Judah, flooding, overflowing, and reaching up to the neck. But God is with us;#8.8 Heb Immanuel the span of his wings will cover the width of the land.
9Unite#8.9 Heb uncertain yourselves, peoples, and be shattered!
Listen, all distant places of the earth!
Prepare to be shattered!
Prepare to be shattered!
10Create a plan, but be frustrated!
Speak a word, but it won’t stand, for God is with us.#8.10 Heb Immanuel
11The LORD spoke to me, taking hold of me and warning me not to walk in the way of this people: 12Don’t call conspiracy all that this people calls conspiracy. Don’t fear what they fear, and don’t be terrified. 13It is the LORD of heavenly forces whom you should hold sacred, whom you should fear, and whom you should hold in awe.
14God will become a sanctuary—
but he will be a stone to trip over and a rock to stumble on for the two houses of Israel;
a trap and a snare for those living in Jerusalem.
15Many of them will stumble and fall,
and be broken, snared, and captured.
16Bind up the testimony; seal up the teaching among my disciples. 17I will wait for the LORD, who has hidden his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in God. 18Look! I and the children the LORD gave me are signs and wonders in Israel from the LORD of heavenly forces, who lives on Mount Zion.
19If they say to you: “Consult the ghosts and the spirits that chirp and mutter. (Shouldn’t a people consult its gods?) Consult the dead on behalf of the living 20for instruction and for testimony”—they will surely say such things, but they will never see the dawn.#8.20 Heb uncertain for 8:19-20
21They will pass through the land,#8.21 Or it dejected and hungry, and when they are hungry, they will be enraged and will curse their king and God. They will turn toward heaven 22and look to the earth, but they will see only distress and darkness, random movement, and the anguish and doom of banishment.#8.22 Heb uncertain for 8:21-22

Isaiah 8
8
1Yahweh said to me, “Take a large tablet, and write on it with a man’s pen, ‘For Maher Shalal Hash Baz’;#8:1 “Maher Shalal Hash Baz” means “quick to the plunder, swift to the prey”. 2and I will take for myself faithful witnesses to testify: Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.”
3I went to the prophetess, and she conceived, and bore a son. Then Yahweh said to me, “Call his name ‘Maher Shalal Hash Baz.’ 4For before the child knows how to say, ‘My father’ and ‘My mother,’ the riches of Damascus and the plunder of Samaria will be carried away by the king of Assyria.”
5Yahweh spoke to me yet again, saying, 6“Because this people has refused the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son; 7now therefore, behold, the Lord brings upon them the mighty flood waters of the River: the king of Assyria and all his glory. It will come up over all its channels, and go over all its banks. 8It will sweep onward into Judah. It will overflow and pass through. It will reach even to the neck. The stretching out of its wings will fill the width of your land, O Immanuel.
9Make an uproar, you peoples, and be broken in pieces! Listen, all you from far countries: dress for battle, and be shattered! Dress for battle, and be shattered! 10Take counsel together, and it will be brought to nothing; speak the word, and it will not stand, for God is with us.”
11For Yahweh spoke this to me with a strong hand, and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying, 12“Don’t call a conspiracy all that this people call a conspiracy. Don’t fear their threats or be terrorized. 13Yahweh of Armies is who you must respect as holy. He is the one you must fear. He is the one you must dread. 14He will be a sanctuary, but for both houses of Israel, he will be a stumbling stone and a rock that makes them fall. For the people of Jerusalem, he will be a trap and a snare. 15Many will stumble over it, fall, be broken, be snared, and be captured.”
16Wrap up the covenant. Seal the law among my disciples. 17I will wait for Yahweh, who hides his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. 18Behold, I and the children whom Yahweh has given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from Yahweh of Armies, who dwells in Mount Zion.
19When they tell you, “Consult with those who have familiar spirits and with the wizards, who chirp and who mutter,” shouldn’t a people consult with their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20Turn to the law and to the covenant! If they don’t speak according to this word, surely there is no morning for them. 21They will pass through it, very distressed and hungry. It will happen that when they are hungry, they will worry, and curse their king and their God. They will turn their faces upward, 22then look to the earth and see distress, darkness, and the gloom of anguish. They will be driven into thick darkness.
