Reassurance to King Ahaz
1In the days of Ahaz (Jotham’s son and grandson of Judah’s King Uzziah), Aram’s King Rezin and Israel’s King Pekah (Remaliah’s son) came up to attack Jerusalem, but they couldn’t overpower it.
2When the house of David was told that Aram had become allies with Ephraim, their hearts and the hearts of their people shook as the trees of a forest shake when there is a wind. 3But the LORD said to Isaiah, “Go out to meet Ahaz, you and your son Shear-jashub,#7.3 Or the remaining few will return at the end of the channel of the Upper Pool, by the road to the field where laundry is washed, 4and say to him, ‘Be careful and stay calm. Don’t fear, and don’t lose heart over these two pieces of smoking torches, over the burning anger of Rezin, Aram, and Remaliah’s son. 5Aram has planned evil against you with Ephraim and Remaliah’s son, saying, 6“Let’s march up against Judah, tear it apart, capture it for ourselves, and install Tabeel’s son as its king.” 7But the LORD God says: It won’t happen; it won’t take place. 8The chief of Aram is Damascus; the chief of Damascus is Rezin (in sixty-five more years Ephraim will be shattered as a nation); 9the chief of Ephraim is Samaria; and the chief of Samaria is the son of Remaliah. If you don’t believe this, you can’t be trusted.’”
The sign of Immanuel
10Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz: 11“Ask a sign from the LORD your God. Make it as deep as the grave#7.11 Heb Sheol or as high as heaven.”
12But Ahaz said, “I won’t ask; I won’t test the LORD.”
13Then Isaiah said, “Listen, house of David! Isn’t it enough for you to be tiresome for people that you are also tiresome before my God? 14Therefore, the Lord will give you a sign. The young woman is pregnant and is about to give birth to a son, and she will name him Immanuel.#7.14 Or God is with us 15He will eat butter and honey, and learn to reject evil and choose good. 16Before the boy learns to reject evil and choose good, the land of the two kings you dread will be abandoned. 17The LORD will bring upon you, upon your people, and upon your families days unlike any that have come since the day Ephraim broke away from Judah—the king of Assyria.”
The devastated land
18On that day, the LORD will whistle for the flies from the remotest streams of Egypt and for the bees that are in the land of Assyria. 19They will come and settle in the steep ravines, in the cracks of the cliffs, in all the thornbushes, and in all the watering holes.
20On that day, the Lord will shave with a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates—with the king of Assyria—the head and the pubic hair, and will cut off the beard as well.
21On that day, one will raise a young cow and two sheep 22and will eat butter because of the abundance of milk, for all who remain in the land will eat butter and honey.
23On that day, there will be thorns and thistles in every place where a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels once grew. 24Only those with bows and arrows will go there, because the entire land will become thorns and thistles. 25As for the hills that were once farmed with hoes, you won’t go there for fear of the thorns and thistles. They will become places where cattle are turned loose and sheep wander.

Isaiah 7

A Message to Ahaz
1Now in the days that Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, was king of Judah, Rezin king of Aram #7:1 That is, Syria marched up to wage war against Jerusalem. He was accompanied by Pekah son of Remaliah the king of Israel, but he could not overpower the city.
2When it was reported to the house of David that Aram was in league with Ephraim,#7:2 Or had set up camp in Ephraim, that is, the northern kingdom of Israel the hearts of Ahaz and his people trembled like trees in the forest shaken by the wind.
3Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out with your son Shear-jashub #7:3 Shear-jashub means a remnant shall return. to meet Ahaz at the end of the aqueduct that feeds the upper pool, on the road to the Launderer’s Field, 4and say to him: Calm down and be quiet. Do not be afraid or disheartened over these two smoldering stubs of firewood—over the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram and of the son of Remaliah. 5For Aram, along with Ephraim and the son of Remaliah, has plotted your ruin, saying: 6‘Let us invade Judah, terrorize it, and divide it #7:6 Hebrew split it open among ourselves. Then we can install the son of Tabeal over it as king.’ 7But this is what the Lord GOD says:
‘It will not arise;
it will not happen.
8For the head of Aram is Damascus,
and the head of Damascus is Rezin.
Within sixty-five years
Ephraim will be shattered as a people.
9The head of Ephraim is Samaria,
and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah.
If you do not stand firm in your faith,
then you will not stand at all.’”
The Sign of Immanuel
(Matthew 1:18–25)
10Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, 11“Ask for a sign from the Lord your God, whether from the depths of Sheol or the heights of heaven.”
12But Ahaz replied, “I will not ask; I will not test the Lord.”
13Then Isaiah said, “Hear now, O house of David! Is it not enough to try the patience of men? Will you try the patience of my God as well? 14Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin #7:14 Or young woman will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel.#7:14 Immanuel means God with us; literally and she will call His name Immanuel; DSS and His name will be called Immanuel or and he will call His name Immanuel; LXX you will call His name Immanuel; cited in Matthew 1:23. 15By the time He knows enough to reject evil and choose good, He will be eating curds and honey. 16For before the boy knows enough to reject evil and choose good, the land of the two kings you dread will be laid waste.
Judgment to Come
(Micah 1:1–7)
17The Lord will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since the day Ephraim separated from Judah—He will bring the king of Assyria.”
18On that day the Lord will whistle to the flies at the farthest streams of the Nile and to the bees in the land of Assyria.
19And they will all come and settle
in the steep ravines and clefts of the rocks,
in all the thornbushes and watering holes.
20On that day the Lord will use a razor hired from beyond the Euphrates #7:20 Hebrew the River—the king of Assyria—to shave your head and the hair of your legs, and to remove your beard as well. 21On that day a man will raise a young cow and two sheep, 22and from the abundance of milk they give, he will eat curds; for all who remain in the land will eat curds and honey.
23And on that day, in every place that had a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels of silver,#7:23 Hebrew a thousand of silver; that is, approximately 25.1 pounds or 11.4 kilograms of silver only briers and thorns will be found. 24Men will go there with bow and arrow, for the land will be covered with briers and thorns. 25For fear of the briers and thorns, you will no longer traverse the hills once tilled by the hoe; they will become places for oxen to graze and sheep to trample.
