Isaiah 52
52
Awake, holy Zion
1Awake, awake,
put on your strength, Zion!
Put on your splendid clothing,
Jerusalem, you holy city;
for the uncircumcised and unclean
will no longer come into you.
2Shake the dust off yourself;
rise up; sit enthroned, Jerusalem.
Loose the bonds from your neck,
captive Daughter Zion!
3The LORD proclaims:
You were sold for nothing,
and you will be redeemed without money.
4The LORD God proclaims:
Long ago my people went down
to reside in Egypt.
Moreover, Assyria has oppressed them without cause.
5And now what have I here? says the LORD.
My people are taken away for nothing.
Their rulers wail, says the LORD,
and continually all day long my name is despised.
6Therefore, my people will know my name on that day;
I’m the one who promises it; I’m here.
Your God rules
7How beautiful upon the mountains
are the feet of a messenger
who proclaims peace,
who brings good news,
who proclaims salvation,
who says to Zion, “Your God rules!”
8Listen! Your lookouts lift their voice;
they sing out together!
Right before their eyes they see the LORD returning to Zion.
9Break into song together, you ruins of Jerusalem!
The LORD has comforted his people and has redeemed Jerusalem.
10The LORD has bared his holy arm in view of all the nations;
all the ends of the earth have seen our God’s victory.
11Depart! Depart! Go out from there!
Unclean! Don’t touch!
Get out of that place; purify yourselves,
carriers of the LORD’s equipment!
12You won’t go out in a rush,
nor will you run away,
because the one going before you is the LORD;
your rear guard is the God of Israel.
Suffering servant
13Look, my servant will succeed.
He will be exalted and lifted very high.
14Just as many were appalled by you,
he too appeared disfigured, inhuman,
his appearance unlike that of mortals.
15But he will astonish#52.15 Or sprinkle many nations.
Kings will be silenced because of him,
because they will see what they haven’t seen before;
what they haven’t heard before, they will ponder.

Isaiah 52
52
Deliverance for Jerusalem
1Wake up, wake up, O Zion!
Clothe yourself with strength.
Put on your beautiful clothes, O holy city of Jerusalem,
for unclean and godless people will enter your gates no longer.
2Rise from the dust, O Jerusalem.
Sit in a place of honor.
Remove the chains of slavery from your neck,
O captive daughter of Zion.
3For this is what the Lord says:
“When I sold you into exile,
I received no payment.
Now I can redeem you
without having to pay for you.”
4This is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Long ago my people chose to live in Egypt. Now they are oppressed by Assyria. 5What is this?” asks the Lord. “Why are my people enslaved again? Those who rule them shout in exultation.#52:5a As in Dead Sea Scrolls; Masoretic Text reads Those who rule them wail. My name is blasphemed all day long.#52:5b Greek version reads The Gentiles continually blaspheme my name because of you. Compare Rom 2:24. 6But I will reveal my name to my people, and they will come to know its power. Then at last they will recognize that I am the one who speaks to them.”
7How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of the messenger who brings good news,
the good news of peace and salvation,
the news that the God of Israel#52:7 Hebrew of Zion. reigns!
8The watchmen shout and sing with joy,
for before their very eyes
they see the Lord returning to Jerusalem.#52:8 Hebrew to Zion.
9Let the ruins of Jerusalem break into joyful song,
for the Lord has comforted his people.
He has redeemed Jerusalem.
10The Lord has demonstrated his holy power
before the eyes of all the nations.
All the ends of the earth will see
the victory of our God.
11Get out! Get out and leave your captivity,
where everything you touch is unclean.
Get out of there and purify yourselves,
you who carry home the sacred objects of the Lord.
12You will not leave in a hurry,
running for your lives.
For the Lord will go ahead of you;
yes, the God of Israel will protect you from behind.
The Lord’s Suffering Servant
13See, my servant will prosper;
he will be highly exalted.
14But many were amazed when they saw him.#52:14 As in Syriac version; Hebrew reads you.
His face was so disfigured he seemed hardly human,
and from his appearance, one would scarcely know he was a man.
15And he will startle#52:15a Or cleanse. many nations.
Kings will stand speechless in his presence.
For they will see what they had not been told;
they will understand what they had not heard about.#52:15b Greek version reads Those who have never been told about him will see, / and those who have never heard of him will understand. Compare Rom 15:21.
