Isaiah 34

Vengeance against Edom
1Draw near, you nations, to hear;
and listen, you peoples.
Hear, earth and all who fill it,
world and all its offspring.
2The LORD rages against all the nations,
and is angry with all their armies.
God is about to wipe them out
and has prepared them for slaughter.
3Their dead will be cast out,
the stench of their corpses will rise,
and the mountains will melt from their blood.
4All the stars of heaven will dissolve,
the skies will roll up like a scroll,
and all the stars will fall,
like a leaf withering from a vine,
like fruit from a fig tree.
5When my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens,
it will descend upon Edom for judgment,
upon a people I have doomed for destruction.
6The LORD has a sword covered with blood;
it is soaked with fat
from the blood of lambs and goats,
from the kidney fat of rams,
for the LORD has a sacrifice in Bozrah,
a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7Wild oxen will fall with them,
steers with mighty bulls,
and their land will be drenched with blood;
its soil soaked with fat.
8The LORD has a day of vengeance,
a year of payback for Zion’s cause.
9Edom’s streams will be turned into pitch,
its dust into sulfur,
and its land will become burning pitch.
10Night and day won’t be extinguished;
its smoke will go up forever.
From generation to generation it will lie waste;
no one will ever pass through it again.
11Screech owls and crows will possess it;
owls and ravens will live there.#34.11 Species uncertain
God will stretch over it the measuring line of chaos
and the plummet stone of emptiness over its officials.
12No Kingdom There, they will call it,
and all its princes will disappear.
13Thorns will grow up in its palaces,
weeds and brambles in its fortresses.
It will be a dwelling for jackals,
a home for ostriches.
14Wildcats will meet hyenas,
the goat demon will call to his friends,
and there Lilith#34.14 Name of a demon will lurk
and find her resting place.
15There the snake will nest and lay eggs
and brood and hatch in its shadow.
There too vultures will gather,
each with its mate.#34.15 Species uncertain
16Consult the LORD’s scroll and read:
Not one of these will be missing;
none will lack its mate.
God’s own mouth has commanded;
God’s own spirit has gathered them.
17God has cast the lot for them;
God’s hand allotted it to them with the measuring line.
They will possess it forever;
they will live in it from generation to generation.

Isaiah 34
34
God’s Wrath against Nations
1Come near, you nations, to hear; and listen, O peoples!
Let the earth and all that is in it hear, and the world and all that comes forth from it.
2For the Lord is angry at all the nations,
And His wrath is against all their armies;
He has #Lit put them under the ban.utterly doomed them,
He has given them over to slaughter.
3So their slain will be thrown out,
And the stench of their corpses will rise,
And the mountains will flow with their blood.
4All the host of heaven will be dissolved,
And the skies will be rolled up like a scroll;
All their hosts [the stars and the planets] will also wither away
As a leaf withers from the vine,
And as a fig withers from the fig tree.
5For My sword is satiated [with blood] in heaven;
Indeed, it will come down for judgment on Edom
And on the people whom I have doomed for destruction.
6The sword of the Lord is filled with blood [from sacrifices],
It drips with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah (Edom’s capital city)
And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7Wild oxen will also fall with them
And the young bulls with the strong bulls;
And their land will be soaked with blood,
And their dust made greasy with fat.
8For the Lord has a day of vengeance,
A year of retribution for the cause of Zion.
9The streams [of Edom] will be turned into pitch,
And its dust into brimstone,
And its land will become burning pitch.
10The burning will not be quenched night or day;
Its smoke will go up forever.
From generation to generation it will lie in ruins;
No one will ever again pass through it.
11But the pelican and the porcupine will take possession of it;
The owl and the raven will dwell in it.
And He will stretch over it (Edom) the measuring line of desolation
And the plumb line of emptiness.
12Its nobles—there is no one there
Whom they may proclaim king—
And all its princes will be nothing.
13Thorns will come up in its fortified palaces,
Nettles and brambles in its fortified cities;
It will be a haunt for jackals,
An abode for ostriches.
14The creatures of the desert will encounter jackals
And the #Or demon satyr.hairy goat will call to its kind;
Indeed, #Thought by some to be a female demon associated with the night.Lilith (night demon) will settle there
And find herself a place of rest.
15There the arrow snake will make her nest and lay her eggs,
And hatch them and gather her young under her protection;
Indeed, the birds of prey will be gathered there [to breed],
Every one with its own kind.
16Seek from the book of the Lord, and read:
Not one of these [creatures] will be missing;
None will lack its mate.
For His mouth has commanded,
And His Spirit has gathered them.
17The Lord has cast the lot for them,
And His hand has divided and apportioned #Lit it to them.Edom to the wild beasts by measuring-line.
They will possess it forever;
From generation to generation they will dwell in it.
