Isaiah 26
26
Trusting in God forever
1On that day, this song will be sung in the land of Judah:
Ours is a strong city!
God makes salvation its walls and ramparts.
2Open the gates and let a righteous nation enter,
a nation that keeps faith.
3Those with sound thoughts you will keep in peace,
in peace because they trust in you.
4Trust in the LORD forever,
for the LORD is a rock for all ages.
5He has thrown down those living on high,
and he will level the lofty town,
leveling it down to the earth;
he will bring it down to dust.
6The feet trample it,
the feet of the poor,
the steps of the needy.
7The way of the righteous is level;
you clear a path for the righteous.
8In the path of your justice, LORD, we wait for you;
with all our being, we long for your name and your acclaim.
9At night I long for you with my whole being;
my spirit within me watches for you.
When your judgments are at work in the earth,
those living in the world learn righteousness.
10When the wicked are favored, they don’t learn righteousness;
even among those who do right they do wrong,
and they fail to see the LORD’s majesty.
11 LORD, your hand is lifted up,
but they don’t see.
Let them see and shrink back because of your zeal for your people;
your burning anger that consumes your enemies.
12 LORD, grant us peace,
because all that we have done has been your doing.
13 LORD our God, other masters besides you have ruled us,
but we will profess your name alone.
14The dead don’t live; ghosts don’t rise.
Indeed, you have punished and destroyed them,
and abolished all memory of them.
15You’ve enlarged the nation, LORD.
You’ve enlarged the nation; you are glorified.
You’ve expanded all the land’s boundaries.
16 LORD, in distress they sought you out;
they poured out prayers to you when you disciplined them.
17As a pregnant woman close to childbirth is in labor pains,
crying out in her pangs,
so were we because of you, LORD.
18We were pregnant, we writhed,
but we gave birth to wind.
We have achieved no victories on earth;
the inhabitants of the earth never fall.
19Your dead will live, their#26.19 Or my corpses will rise,
and those who dwell in the dust will shout for joy.
Your shadow is a shadow of light,
but you will bring down the ghosts into the underworld.
20Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut your doors behind you.
Take cover, for in a little while the fury will be over.
21Look! The LORD is going out from his place
to bring the iniquity of the ruler of the earth down upon him.
The earth will uncover its blood
and will conceal its slain no longer.

The Song of Judah
1On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:
We have a strong city.
Salvation is established as walls and ramparts.#Is 60:18
2Open the gates
so a righteous nation can come in —
one that remains faithful.
3You will keep the mind that is dependent on you
in perfect peace,#Is 26:12; 27:5; 57:19; 66:12
for it is trusting in you.
4Trust in the Lord forever,
because in the Lord, the Lord himself, is an everlasting rock!#Ps 73:26; Is 17:10; 30:29; 44:8
5For he has humbled those who live in lofty places —
an inaccessible city.#Is 25:10–12
He brings it down; he brings it down to the ground;
he throws it to the dust.
6Feet trample it,
the feet of the humble,
the steps of the poor.
God’s People Vindicated
7The path of the righteous is level;#Ps 27:11
you clear a straight path for the righteous.
8Yes, Lord, we wait for you
in the path of your judgments.
Our desire is for your name and renown.#Ex 3:15
9I long for you in the night;#Ps 77:2; 84:2; 119:20,81
yes, my spirit within me diligently seeks you,
for when your judgments are in the land,
the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.
10But if the wicked man is shown favor,
he does not learn righteousness.
In a righteous land he acts unjustly
and does not see the majesty of the Lord.
11 Lord, your hand is lifted up to take action,
but they do not see it.
Let them see your zeal for your people
and be put to shame.
Let fire consume your adversaries.
12 Lord, you will establish peace for us,
for you have also done all our work for us.
13 Lord our God, lords other than you have owned#26:13 Or married us,
but we remember your name alone.#Jn 10:25
14The dead do not live;
departed spirits do not rise up.
Indeed, you have punished and destroyed them;
you have wiped out all memory of them.#Jb 18:17; Ps 9:6
15You have added to the nation, Lord.#Is 9:3
You have added to the nation; you are honored.
You have expanded all the borders of the land.#Is 33:17; 54:2–3
16 Lord, they went to you in their distress;#Is 37:3; Hs 5:15
they poured out whispered prayers
because your discipline fell on them.#26:16 Hb obscure
17As a pregnant woman about to give birth
writhes and cries out in her pains,#Is 13:8
so we were before you, Lord.
18We became pregnant, we writhed in pain;
we gave birth to wind.
We have won no victories on earth,
and the earth’s inhabitants have not fallen.
19Your dead will live; their bodies#26:19 Lit live; my body they will rise.#Is 25:8; Ezk 37:1–14; Dn 12:2; Hs 13:14; Mt 11:5; Lk 7:22; Jn 8:51
Awake and sing, you who dwell in the dust!
For you will be covered with the morning dew,#26:19 Lit For your dew is a dew of lights
and the earth will bring out the departed spirits.
20Go, my people, enter your rooms
and close your doors behind you.
Hide for a little while until the wrath has passed.#Is 10:5,25; 13:5; 34:2; 66:14
21For look, the Lord is coming from his place#Mc 1:3
to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.#Is 13:11
The earth will reveal the blood shed on it
and will no longer conceal her slain.
