Alliance with Egypt Condemned
1“Woe to the rebellious children,” declares Yahweh,
“Who execute counsel, but not Mine,
And #30:1 Lit pour out a drink offeringmake an alliance, but not of My Spirit,
In order to add sin to sin,
2Who go down to Egypt—
But did not ask #30:2 Lit My mouthMe—
To find strength in the strong defense of Pharaoh
And to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt!
3“Therefore the strong defense of Pharaoh will be your shame
And the refuge in the shadow of Egypt, your dishonor.
4“For their princes are at Zoan
And their messengers reach Hanes.
5“Everyone will be ashamed because of a people who cannot profit them,
Who are not for help or profit, but for shame and also for reproach.”
6The #30:6 Or burden oforacle concerning the beasts of the Negev.
Through a land of distress and anguish,
From #30:6 Lit themwhere come lioness and lion, viper and flying fiery serpent,
They carry their wealth on the #30:6 Lit shouldersbacks of young donkeys
And their treasures on camels’ humps,
To a people who cannot profit them;
7Even Egypt, whose help is vain and empty.
Therefore, I have called #30:7 Lit this oneher
“#30:7 M.T. They are Rahab (or arrogance), to sit stillRahab who has ceased.”
8Now go, write it on a tablet before them
And inscribe it on a scroll,
That it may be in the time to come
# 30:8 As in the versions; Heb Forever and ever As a witness forever.
9For this is a rebellious people, false sons,
Sons who are not willing to listen
To the law of Yahweh,
10Who say to the seers, “You must not see,”
And to those who have visions, “You must not behold visions for us of what is right,
Speak to us #30:10 Lit smooth thingspleasant words,
Behold visions of illusions.
11“Get out of the way, turn aside from the path,
# 30:11 Lit Cause to cease from our presence Cease speaking before us about the Holy One of Israel.”
12Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel,
“Since you have rejected this word
And have put your trust in oppression and deviousness and have relied on them,
13Therefore this iniquity will be to you
Like a breach about to fall,
A bulge in a high wall,
Whose breaking comes suddenly in an instant,
14Whose breaking is like the breaking of a potter’s jar,
# 30:14 Lit Crushed, it will not be spared So ruthlessly shattered
That a potsherd will not be found among its pieces
To #30:14 Lit snatch uptake fire from a hearth
Or to scoop water from a cistern.”
15For thus Lord Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, has said,
“In #30:15 Lit returningrepentance and rest you will be saved,
In quietness and trust is your might.”
But you were not willing,
16And you said, “No, for we will flee on horses,”
Therefore you shall flee!
“And we will ride on swift horses,”
Therefore those who pursue you shall be swift.
17One thousand will flee at the threat of one man;
You will flee at the threat of five,
Until you are left as a #30:17 Lit poleflag on a mountain top
And as a #30:17 Or signalstandard on a hill.
Yahweh Is Gracious and Just
18¶Therefore Yahweh waits with longing to be gracious to you,
And therefore He is on high to have compassion on you.
For Yahweh is a God of justice;
How blessed are all those who wait for Him.
19 # 30:19 M.T. A people will inhabit Zion, Jerusalem O people in Zion, inhabitant in Jerusalem, you will weep no longer. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears it, He will answer you. 20The Lord has given you bread of distress and water of oppression; He, your Teacher will no longer hide Himself, but your eyes will see your Teacher. 21And your ears will hear a word behind you, “#30:21 Lit saying, “ThisThis is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right or to the left. 22And you will defile your graven images overlaid with your silver, and your molten images plated with your gold. You will scatter them as an impure thing and say to #30:22 Lit it, “Go out”them, “Be gone!”
23Then He will give you rain for #30:23 Lit yourthe seed which you will sow in the ground, and bread from the produce of the ground, and it will be #30:23 Lit fatnessrich and fat; on that day your livestock will graze in a roomy pasture. 24Also the oxen and the donkeys which work the ground will eat salted fodder, which #30:24 Lit one winnowshas been winnowed with shovel and fork. 25And it will be that on every lofty mountain and on every lifted up hill there will be #30:25 Lit canals, streams of waterstreams running with water on the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. 26And the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven days, on the day Yahweh binds up the fracture of His people and heals the bruise #30:26 Lit of His blowHe has inflicted.
27¶Behold, the name of Yahweh comes from afar;
Burning is His anger and heavy is His #30:27 Lit upliftingsmoke;
His lips are filled with indignation
And His tongue is like a consuming fire;
28His breath is like an overflowing torrent,
Which reaches to the neck,
To shake the nations back and forth in a #30:28 Lit sifting of the worthlesssieve of worthlessness,
And to put in the jaws of the peoples the bridle which staggers one to ruin.
29You will have #30:29 Lit the songsongs as in the night when you set yourself apart as holy for the festival,
And gladness of heart as when one marches to the sound of the flute,
To go to the mountain of Yahweh, to the Rock of Israel.
30And Yahweh will cause #30:30 Lit the majesty of His voiceHis splendid voice to be heard,
And the #30:30 Lit descentdescending of His arm to be seen in raging anger,
And in the flame of a consuming fire
In cloudburst, downpour, and hailstones.
31For at the voice of Yahweh Assyria will be dismayed,
When He strikes with the rod.
32And every #30:32 Lit passingblow of the #30:32 Lit staff of foundationappointed staff,
Which Yahweh will cause to rest upon him,
Will be with the music of tambourines and lyres;
And in battles, waving weapons He will fight them.
33For #30:33 The place of human sacrifice to MolechTopheth has long been ready,
Indeed, it has been prepared for the king.
He has made it deep and large,
# 30:33 Lit Its pile A pyre of fire with plenty of wood;
The breath of Yahweh, like a torrent of brimstone, sets it afire.

The Worthless Treaty with Egypt
1“Woe to the rebellious children,”
declares the Lord,
“to those who carry out a plan that is not Mine,
who form an alliance, but against My will,
heaping up sin upon sin.
2They set out to go down to Egypt
without asking My advice,
to seek shelter under Pharaoh’s protection
and take refuge in Egypt’s shade.
3But Pharaoh’s protection will become your shame,
and the refuge of Egypt’s shade your disgrace.
4For though their princes are at Zoan
and their envoys have arrived in Hanes,
5everyone will be put to shame
because of a people useless to them.
They cannot be of help;
they are good for nothing but shame and reproach.”
6This is the burden against the beasts of the Negev:
Through a land of hardship and distress,
of lioness and lion,
of viper and flying serpent,
they carry their wealth on the backs of donkeys
and their treasures on the humps of camels,
to a people of no profit to them.
7Egypt’s help is futile and empty;
therefore I have called her
Rahab Who Sits Still.#30:7 Hebrew Rahab-hem-shebeth
8Go now, write it on a tablet in their presence
and inscribe it on a scroll;
it will be for the days to come,
a witness forever and ever.
9These are rebellious people, deceitful children,
children unwilling to obey the Lord’s instruction.
10They say to the seers,
“Stop seeing visions!”
and to the prophets,
“Do not prophesy to us the truth!
Speak to us pleasant words;
prophesy illusions.
11Get out of the way; turn off the road.
Rid us of the Holy One of Israel!”
12Therefore this is what the Holy One of Israel says:
“Because you have rejected this message,
trusting in oppression and relying on deceit,
13this iniquity of yours is like a breach about to fail,
a bulge in a high wall,
whose collapse will come suddenly—
in an instant!
14It will break in pieces like a potter’s jar,
shattered so that no fragment can be found.
Not a shard will be found in the dust
large enough to scoop the coals from a hearth
or to skim the water from a cistern.”
15For the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, has said:
“By repentance and rest
you would be saved;
your strength would lie in quiet confidence—
but you were not willing.”
16“No,” you say, “we will flee on horses.”
Therefore you will flee!
“We will ride swift horses,”
but your pursuers will be faster.
17A thousand will flee at the threat of one;
at the threat of five you will all flee,
until you are left alone like a pole on a mountaintop,
like a banner on a hill.
God Will Be Gracious
18Therefore the Lord longs to be gracious to you;
therefore He rises to show you compassion,
for the Lord is a just God.
Blessed are all who wait for Him.
19O people in Zion who dwell in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. He will surely be gracious when you cry for help; when He hears, He will answer you. 20The Lord will give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, but your Teacher will no longer hide Himself—with your own eyes you will see Him.
21And whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.” 22So you will desecrate your silver-plated idols and your gold-plated images. You will throw them away like menstrual cloths, saying to them, “Be gone!”
23Then He will send rain for the seed that you have sown in the ground, and the food that comes from your land will be rich and plentiful. On that day your cattle will graze in open pastures. 24The oxen and donkeys that work the ground will eat salted fodder, winnowed with shovel and pitchfork.
25And from every high mountain and every raised hill, streams of water will flow in the day of great slaughter, when the towers fall. 26The light of the moon will be as bright as the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter—like the light of seven days—on the day that the Lord binds up the brokenness of His people and heals the wounds He has inflicted.
27Behold, the Name of the Lord comes from afar,
with burning anger and dense smoke.
His lips are full of fury,
and His tongue is like a consuming fire.
28His breath is like a rushing torrent
that rises to the neck.
He comes to sift the nations in a sieve of destruction;
He bridles the jaws of the peoples to lead them astray.
29You will sing
as on the night of a holy festival,
and your heart will rejoice
like one who walks to the music of a flute,
going up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the Rock of Israel.
30And the Lord will cause His majestic voice to be heard
and His mighty arm to be revealed,
striking in angry wrath with a flame of consuming fire,
and with cloudburst, storm, and hailstones.
31For Assyria will be shattered at the voice of the Lord;
He will strike them with His scepter.
32And with every stroke of the rod of punishment #30:32 Some Hebrew manuscripts, Syriac; MT the rod of foundation; DSS the rod of His foundation
that the Lord brings down on them,
the tambourines and lyres will sound
as He battles with weapons brandished.
33For Topheth has long been prepared;
it has been made ready for the king.
Its funeral pyre is deep and wide,
with plenty of fire and wood.
The breath of the Lord, like a torrent of burning sulfur,
sets it ablaze.
