An Oracle Concerning the Valley of Vision
1The #22:1 Or burden oforacle concerning the valley of vision.
What is the matter with you now, that you have all gone up to the housetops?
2You who were full of noise,
You roaring city, you exultant town;
Your slain were not slain with the sword,
Nor #22:2 Lit dead in battledid they die in battle.
3All your rulers have fled together,
And have been captured #22:3 Lit from a bowwithout the bow;
All of you who were found were captured together,
# 22:3 As in ancient versions; Heb They fled far away Though they had fled far away.
4Therefore I say, “Turn your gaze away from me,
Let me weep bitterly,
Do not insist on comforting me concerning the destruction of the daughter of my people.”
5For Lord Yahweh of hosts has a day of confusion, oppression, and panic
In the valley of vision,
A breaking down of walls
And a crying #22:5 Or againstto the mountain.
6Now Elam took up the quiver
With the chariots, #22:6 Lit maninfantry, and horsemen;
And Kir uncovered the shield.
7Then your choicest valleys were full of chariots,
And the horsemen took up fixed positions at the gate.
8And He revealed the #22:8 Lit screen, coveringdefense of Judah.
In that day you looked to the weapons of the house of the forest,
9And you saw that the breaches
In the wall of the city of David were many;
And you collected the waters of the lower pool.
10Then you counted the houses of Jerusalem
And tore down houses to fortify the wall.
11And you made a reservoir between the two walls
For the waters of the old pool.
But you did not look to Him who made it,
Nor did you see Him who formed it long ago.
12¶Therefore in that day Lord Yahweh of hosts called you to weeping, to wailing,
To shaving the head, and to wearing sackcloth.
13Instead, behold, there is joy and gladness,
Killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep,
Eating of meat and drinking of wine:
“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.”
14But Yahweh of hosts revealed Himself in my ears,
“Surely this iniquity shall not be atoned for you
Until you die,” says Lord Yahweh of hosts.
15Thus says Lord Yahweh of hosts,
“Come, go to this steward,
To Shebna, who is in charge of the royal household,
16‘What right do you have here,
And whom do you have here,
That you have hewn a tomb for yourself here,
You who hew a tomb on the height,
You who carve a dwelling place for #22:16 Lit himselfyourself in the cliff?
17‘Behold, Yahweh is about to hurl you headlong, O man.
And He is about to grasp you firmly
18 And He will surely roll you tightly like a ball,
To be cast into a vast country;
There you will die,
And there your glorious chariots will be,
You disgrace of your master’s house.’
19“I will push you out of your office,
And #22:19 As in many ancient versions; Heb HeI will pull you down from your station.
20“Then it will be in that day,
That I will summon My servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah,
21And I will clothe him with your tunic
And tie your sash securely about him.
I will give your #22:21 Lit ruleauthority into his hand,
And he will become a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
22“Then I will set the key of the house of David on his shoulder,
When he opens no one will shut,
When he shuts no one will open.
23“I will drive him like a peg in a firm place,
And he will become a throne of glory to his father’s house.
24So they will hang on him all the glory of his father’s house, offspring and #22:24 Or possibly leafissue, all the least of vessels, from bowls to all the jars. 25In that day,” declares Yahweh of hosts, “the peg driven in a firm place will give way; it will even break off and fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut off, for Yahweh has spoken.”

1THE ORACLE CONCERNING THE VALLEY OF VISION.
What aileth thee now, that thou art gone up, all of thee to the house-tops?
2O thou, that wast full of noise,
A tumultuous city, a joyous city!
Thy slain are not slain by the sword,
Neither are they dead in battle.
3All thy leaders who fled away together, have been taken by the archers;
All that were found in thee have been taken together, even they who had fled from far.
4Wherefore I said: Turn your eyes away from me; I will weep bitterly:
Labour not to comfort me for the desolation of the daughter of my people.
5For it is a day of trouble, and of treading down, and of perplexity,
From the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, in the valley of vision:
They break down the wall,
And the outcry for help pierceth unto the mountains.
6And Elam beareth the quiver,
With chariots of men and horsemen;
And Kir uncovereth the shield.
7And it came to pass, that thy choicest valleys were filled with chariots,
And the horsemen did set themselves in array against the gate.
8And when he removed the veil of Judah,
Thou didst look in that day to the armour of the house of the forest.
9Ye have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they have multiplied;
And ye collected together the waters of the lower pool.
10And ye have numbered the houses of Jerusalem,
And the houses have ye broken down to fortify the wall.
11Ye have made also a reservoir for water between the two walls,
For the water of the old pool.
But ye have not looked unto Him who hath disposed this;
And Him who formed it of old, ye have not regarded.
12And in that day did the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, call
To weeping and to lamentation;
And to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:
13But, behold joy and gladness,
Slaying of oxen, and killing of sheep;
Eating of flesh, and drinking of wine:
Let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we shall die.
14Therefore it was revealed in mine ears by Jehovah of hosts,
Surely this your iniquity shall not be expiated till ye die,
Saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.
15Thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts:
Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, who is over the household, and say:
16What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here?
That thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here?
O thou that hewest out thy sepulchre on high,
That gravest in the rock an habitation for thyself!
17Behold, Jehovah casteth thee down with a mighty overthrow:
And grasping he will grasp thee;
18In whirling he will whirl thee with a whirl,
Like that of a ball, into a wide country:
There shalt thou die; and there shall thy glorious chariots be;
O thou the shame of the house of thy lord!
19And I will drive thee from thy station,
And from thy state shall he pull thee down.
20And it shall come to pass in that day,
That I will call my servant,
Even Eliakim the son of Hilkiah:
21And I will clothe him with thy robe,
And strengthen him with thy girdle;
And thy government will I commit into his hand;
And he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,
And to the house of Judah.
22And I will lay the key of the house of David upon his shoulder;
And he shall open, and none shall shut;
And he shall shut, and none shall open.
23And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place;
And he shall be for a glorious throne to his father’s house.
24And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father's house,
The offspring of high and of low degree;
All small vessels, from vessels used as cups
To every sort of meaner vessels.
25In that day, saith Jehovah of hosts,
Shall the nail that is fastened in a sure place be removed,
And be cut down, and fall;
And the burden which was upon it shall be cut off:
For Jehovah hath spoken it.
