Mattithyahu (Matthew) 27
27
1And morning having come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against יהושע, so as to put Him to death.
2And having bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
3Then Yehuḏah – he who delivered Him up – having seen that He had been condemned, repented, returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and to the elders,
4saying, “I have sinned in delivering up innocent blood.” And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!”
5And throwing down the pieces of silver in the Dwelling Place he left, and went and hanged himself.
6And the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not right to put them into the treasury, seeing they are the price of blood.”
7So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field, for the burial of strangers.
8Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood, until today.
9Then was filled what was spoken by Yirmeyahu the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of Him who was pierced, on whom they of the children of Yisra’ĕl set a price,
10and gave them for the potter’s field, as יהוה had ordered me.”# Zech. 11:12, 13
11And יהושע stood before the governor, and the governor asked Him, saying, “Are You the Sovereign of the Yehuḏim?” And יהושע said to him, “You say it.”
12And as He was accused by the chief priests and the elders, He answered not.
13Then Pilate said to Him, “Do You not hear how much they witness against You?”
14And He did not answer him, not one word, so that the governor wondered much.
15And at the festival the governor used to release to the crowd one prisoner whom they wished.
16And they had then a well-known prisoner called Barabba.
17So when they were assembled, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you wish I release to you? Barabba, or יהושע who is called Messiah?”
18For he knew that because of envy they had delivered Him up.
19And as he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have none at all to do with that righteous Man, for I have suffered much today in a dream because of Him.”
20But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowds that they should ask for Barabba and to destroy יהושע.
21And the governor answering, said to them, “Which of the two do you wish I release to you?” They said, “Barabba!”
22Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with יהושע who is called Messiah?” They all said to him, “Let Him be impaled!”
23And the governor said, “Indeed, what evil has He done?” And they were crying out all the more, saying, “Let Him be impaled!”
24And when Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but rather an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this Righteous One. You shall see to it.”
25And all the people answering, said, “His blood be on us and on our children.”
26Then he released Barabba to them, but having יהושע whipped, he delivered Him over to be impaled.
27Then the soldiers of the governor took יהושע into the court and gathered the entire company of soldiers around Him.
28And having stripped Him, they put a scarlet robe on Him.
29And plaiting a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they kneeled down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Greetings, Sovereign of the Yehuḏim!”
30And spitting on Him they took the reed and struck Him on the head.
31And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, then put His own garments on Him, and led Him away to be impaled.
32And as they were going out, they found a man of Cyrene, Shim‛on by name – they compelled him to bear His stake.
33And when they came to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull,
34they gave Him wine mixed with bile to drink. And after tasting, He would not drink it.
35And having impaled Him, they divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be filled what was spoken by the prophet, “They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.”# Psa. 22:18
36And sitting down, they guarded Him there.
37And they put up over His head the written charge against Him: THIS IS יהושע, THE SOVEREIGN OF THE YEHUḎIM.
38Then two robbers were impaled with Him, one on the right and another on the left.
39And those passing by were blaspheming Him, shaking their heads,# Psa. 22:7
40and saying, “You who destroy the Dwelling Place and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of Elohim, come down from the stake.”
41And likewise the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocking, said,
42“He saved others – He is unable to save Himself. If He is the Sovereign of Yisra’ĕl, let Him now come down from the stake, and we shall believe Him.
43He trusted in Elohim, let Him rescue Him now if He desires Him, # Psa. 22:8 for He said, ‘I am the Son of Elohim.’ ”
44And also the robbers who were impaled with Him reviled Him, saying the same.
45And from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land, until the ninth hour.
46And about the ninth hour יהושע cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Ěli, Ěli, lemah sheḇaqtani?” that is, “My Ěl, My Ěl, why have You forsaken Me?”# Psa. 22:1
47Some of those standing there, having heard, said, “This One calls Ěliyahu!”
48And immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, and filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave it to Him to drink.# Psa. 69:21
49But the rest said, “Leave it, let us see if Ěliyahu comes to save Him.”
50And יהושע cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit.
51And see, the veil of the Dwelling Place was torn in two from top to bottom, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split,
52and the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the set-apart ones who had fallen asleep were raised,
53and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they went into the set-apart city and appeared to many.
54And when the captain and those with him, who were guarding יהושע, saw the earthquake and all that took place, they feared exceedingly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of Elohim!”
55And many women who followed יהושע from Galil, attending Him, were there, watching from a distance,
56among whom were Miryam from Maḡdala, and Miryam the mother of Ya‛aqoḇ and Yosĕph, and the mother of Zaḇdai’s sons.
57And when evening came, there came a rich man from Ramathayim, named Yosĕph, who himself had also become a taught one of יהושע.
58He went to Pilate and asked for the body of יהושע. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given.
59And having taken the body, Yosĕph wrapped it in clean linen,
60and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock. And he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and went away.
61And Miryam from Maḡdala was there, and the other Miryam, sitting opposite the tomb.
62On the next day, which was after the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate,
63saying, “Master, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, ‘After three days I am raised.’
64Command, then, that the tomb be safeguarded until the third day, lest His taught ones come by night and steal Him away, and should say to the people, ‘He was raised from the dead.’ And the last deception shall be worse than the first.
65So Pilate said to them, “You have a watch, go, safeguard it as you know how.”
66And they went and safeguarded the tomb, sealing the stone and setting the watch.

Matthew 27

Judas Hangs Himself
1Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. 2So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.
3When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4“I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”
5So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
6The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”#27:10 See Zech. 11:12,13; Jer. 19:1-13; 32:6-9.
Jesus Before Pilate
11Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
12When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. 13Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?” 14But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
15Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. 16At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus#27:16 Many manuscripts do not have Jesus; also in verse 17. Barabbas. 17So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?” 18For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”
20But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
21“Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22“What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he said. “It is your responsibility!”
25All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”
26Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus
27Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said. 30They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
The Crucifixion of Jesus
32As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 34There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. 37Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” 41In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42“He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” 44In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus
45From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,#27:46 Some manuscripts Eloi, Eloi lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).#27:46 Psalm 22:1
47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and#27:53 Or tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”
55Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. 56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,#27:56 Greek Joses, a variant of Joseph and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
The Burial of Jesus
57As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The Guard at the Tomb
62The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63“Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ 64So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
65“Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.
