Mattithyahu (Matthew) 16
16
1And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and trying Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven.
2And He answering, said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘Fair weather, for the heaven is red,’
3and in the morning, ‘Stormy weather today, for the heaven is red and overcast.’ You know how to discern the face of the heaven, but you are unable to discern the signs of the times!
4A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Yonah. And He left them and went away.
5And His taught ones came to the other side, and had forgotten to take bread.
6And יהושע said to them, “Mind! And beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
7And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “Because we brought no bread!”
8But יהושע, aware of this, said to them, “O you of little belief, why do you reason among yourselves because you brought no bread?
9“Do you still not understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you picked up?
10Or the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you picked up?”
11How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread, but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?”
12Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
13Now when יהושע came into the parts of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His taught ones, saying, “Who do men say the Son of Aḏam is?”
14And they said, “Some say Yoḥanan the Immerser, and others Ěliyahu, and others Yirmeyahu or one of the prophets.”
15He said to them, “And you, who do you say I am?”
16And Shim‛on Kĕpha answering, said, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living Elohim.”#This is repeated in eight more places.
17And יהושע answering, said to him, “Blessed are you, Shim‛on Bar-Yonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father in the heavens.
18And I also say to you that you are Kĕpha, and on this rock I shall build My assembly, and the gates of She’ol#Shem Toḇ reads: GĕHinnom, i.e. ‘valley of weeping’. shall not overcome it.
19And I shall give you the keys of the reign of the heavens, and whatever you bind on earth shall be having been bound in the heavens, and whatever you loosen on earth shall be having been loosened in the heavens.”# Binding and loosening is a Hebrew idiom for exercising authority (to prohibit and permit).
20Then He warned His taught ones that they should say to no one that He is יהושע the Messiah.
21From that time יהושע began to show to His taught ones that it was necessary for Him to go to Yerushalayim, and to suffer much from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and to be raised again the third day.
22And Kĕpha took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Be kind to Yourself, Master, this shall not be to You!”
23But He turned and said to Kĕpha, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling-block to Me, for your thoughts are not those of Elohim, but those of men.”
24Then יהושע said to His taught ones, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his stake, and follow Me.
25“For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake shall find it.
26“For what is a man profited if he gains all the world, and loses his own life? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?
27For the Son of Aḏam is going to come in the esteem of His Father with His messengers, and then He shall reward each according to his works.# Psa. 62:12; Pro. 24:12#See also Mat. 21:44; John 5:29; Rom. 2:6; 2Cor. 5:10; Eph. 2:10; Titus 2:7; Titus 2:14; Jas. 2:14-24; Rev. 22:12
28Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death at all until they see the Son of Aḏam coming in His reign:"#See Mat. 17:2-5

The Demand for a Miracle
(Mk 8.11–13; Lk 12.54–56)
1 #
Mt 12.38; Lk 11.16 Some Pharisees and Sadducees who came to Jesus wanted to trap him, so they asked him to perform a miracle for them, to show that God approved of him. 2But Jesus answered, “When the sun is setting, you say, ‘We are going to have fine weather, because the sky is red.’ 3And early in the morning you say, ‘It is going to rain, because the sky is red and dark.’ You can predict the weather by looking at the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs concerning these times!#16.3 Some manuscripts do not have the words of Jesus in verses 2–3. 4#Mt 12.39; Lk 11.29How evil and godless are the people of this day! You ask me for a miracle? No! The only miracle you will be given is the miracle of Jonah.”
So he left them and went away.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
(Mk 8.14–21)
5When the disciples crossed over to the other side of the lake, they forgot to take any bread. 6#Lk 12.1Jesus said to them, “Take care; be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
7They started discussing among themselves, “He says this because we didn't bring any bread.”
8Jesus knew what they were saying, so he asked them, “Why are you discussing among yourselves about not having any bread? How little faith you have! 9#Mt 14.17–21Don't you understand yet? Don't you remember when I broke the five loaves for the 5,000 men? How many baskets did you fill? 10#Mt 15.34–38And what about the seven loaves for the 4,000 men? How many baskets did you fill? 11How is it that you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? Guard yourselves from the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees!”
12Then the disciples understood that he was not warning them to guard themselves from the yeast used in bread but from the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Peter's Declaration about Jesus
(Mk 8.27–30; Lk 9.18–21)
13Jesus went to the territory near the town of Caesarea Philippi, where he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 #
Mt 14.1–2; Mk 6.14–15; Lk 9.7–8 “Some say John the Baptist,” they answered. “Others say Elijah, while others say Jeremiah or some other prophet.”
15 “What about you?” he asked them. “Who do you say I am?”

Jn 6.68–69
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 “Good for you, Simon son of John!” answered Jesus. “For this truth did not come to you from any human being, but it was given to you directly by my Father in heaven. 18And so I tell you, Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my church, and not even death will ever be able to overcome it. 19#Mt 18.18; Jn 20.23I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven; what you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and what you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”
20Then Jesus ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
Jesus Speaks about his Suffering and Death
(Mk 8.31—9.1; Lk 9.22–27)
21From that time on Jesus began to say plainly to his disciples, “I must go to Jerusalem and suffer much from the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the Law. I will be put to death, but three days later I will be raised to life.”
22Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “God forbid it, Lord!” he said. “That must never happen to you!”
23Jesus turned around and said to Peter, “Get away from me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my way, because these thoughts of yours don't come from God, but from human nature.”
24 #
Mt 10.38; Lk 14.27 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to come with me, he must forget self, carry his cross, and follow me. 25#Mt 10.39; Lk 17.33; Jn 12.25For whoever wants to save his own life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26Will people gain anything if they win the whole world but lose their life? Of course not! There is nothing they can give to regain their life. 27#Mt 25.31; Ps 62.12; Rom 2.6For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will reward each one according to his deeds. 28I assure you that there are some here who will not die until they have seen the Son of Man come as King.”
