Mattithyahu (Matthew) 11
11
1And it came to be, when יהושע ended instructing His twelve taught ones, that He set out from there to teach and to proclaim in their cities.
2And when Yoḥanan had heard in the prison of the works of Messiah, he sent two of his taught ones
3and said to Him, “Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?”
4And יהושע answering, said to them, “Go, report to Yoḥanan what you hear and see:
5“Blind receive sight and lame walk, lepers are cleansed and deaf hear,# Isa. 35:5, 6 dead are raised up and poor are brought the Good News.# Isa. 61:1
6“And blessed is he who does not stumble in Me.”
7And as these were going, יהושע began to say to the crowds concerning Yoḥanan, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
8“But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft garments? Look, those wearing soft garments are in the houses of sovereigns.
9“But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet.
10“For this is he of whom it was written, ‘See, I send My messenger before Your face, who shall prepare Your way before You.’# Mal. 3:1
11“Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than Yoḥanan the Immerser, yet the least one in the reign of the heavens is greater than he.
12“And from the days of Yoḥanan the Immerser till now the reign of the heavens is violated, and the violent seize it.#See Luke 16:16, 17 which explains it more clearly.
13“For all the prophets and the Torah prophesied till Yoḥanan.
14“And if you wish to accept it, he is Ěliyahu who was about to come.
15“He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
16“And to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market-places and calling to their companions,
17and saying, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we lamented to you, and you did not beat the breast.’
18“For Yoḥanan came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’
19“The Son of Aḏam came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘See, a man, a glutton and a winedrinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ And wisdom was declared right by her works.”
20Then He began to reproach the cities in which most of His miracles had been done, because they did not repent:
21“Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bĕyth Tsaiḏa! Because if the miracles which were done in you had been done in Tsor and Tsiḏon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22“But I say to you, it shall be more bearable for Tsor and Tsiḏon in the day of judgment than for you.
23“And you, Kephar Naḥum, who were exalted to the heaven, shall be brought down to She’ol!#See Explanatory Notes - "She’ol".# Isa. 14:13-15 Because if the miracles which were done in you had been done in Seḏom, it would have remained until this day.
24“But I say to you that it shall be more bearable for the land of Seḏom in the day of judgment than for you.”
25At that time יהושע responding, said, “I thank You, Father, Master of the heavens and earth, because You have hidden these matters from clever and learned ones and have revealed them to babes.# Luke 10:21
26“Yes, Father, because so it was well-pleasing in Your sight.
27“All have been handed over to Me by My Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father. Nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and he to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him.
28“Come to Me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I shall give you rest.
29“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and humble in heart, and you shall find rest for your beings# Jer. 6:16
30“For My yoke is gentle and My burden is light.”

John’s Inquiry
(Luke 7:18–23)
1After Jesus had finished instructing His twelve disciples, He went on from there to teach and preach in their cities.#11:1 That is, in the towns of Galilee
2Meanwhile John heard in prison about the works of Christ, and he sent his disciples #11:2 BYZ and TR he sent two of his disciples 3to ask Him, “Are You the One who was to come, or should we look for someone else?”
4Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: 5The blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers #11:5 A leper was one afflicted with a skin disease. See Leviticus 13. are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. 6Blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of Me.#11:6 Or who is not offended by Me”
Jesus Testifies about John
(Malachi 3:1–5; Luke 7:24–35)
7As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swaying in the wind? 8Otherwise, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? Look, those who wear fine clothing are found in kings’ palaces. 9What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10This is the one about whom it is written:
‘Behold, I will send My messenger ahead of You,
who will prepare Your way before You.’#11:10 Malachi 3:1
11Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has risen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subject to violence,#11:12 Or has been forcefully advancing and the violent lay claim to it. 13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.#11:14 See Malachi 4:5.
15He who has ears,#11:15 BYZ and TR ears to hear let him hear.
16To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others:
17‘We played the flute for you,
and you did not dance;
we sang a dirge,
and you did not mourn.’
18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon!’ 19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at this glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ But wisdom is vindicated by her actions.”
Woe to the Unrepentant
(Luke 10:13–16)
20Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of His miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
23And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”
Rest for the Weary
(Luke 10:21–24)
25At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26Yes, Father, for this was well-pleasing in Your sight.
27All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.
28Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
