The Birth of Jesus
(Isaiah 7:10–16; Luke 2:1–7)
18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged in marriage to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and was unwilling to disgrace her publicly, he resolved to divorce her quietly.
20But after he had pondered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to embrace Mary as your wife, for the One conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus,#1:21 Jesus means The Lord saves. because He will save His people from their sins.”
22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
23“Behold, the virgin will be with child
and will give birth to a son,
and they will call Him Immanuel”#1:23 Literally they will call His name Immanuel; Isaiah 7:14 (see also DSS)
(which means, “God with us”#1:23 See Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 8:8, and Isaiah 8:10.).
24When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him, and embraced Mary as his wife. 25But he had no union with her #1:25 Literally he did not know her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus.

The Virgin Birth of Jesus
18The birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way: His mother Mary had been promised to Joseph in marriage. But before they were married, Mary realized that she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 19Her husband Joseph was an honorable man and did not want to disgrace her publicly. So he decided to break the marriage agreement with her secretly.
20Joseph had this in mind when an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said to him, “Joseph, descendant of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife. She is pregnant by the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus [He Saves], because he will save his people from their sins.” 22All this happened so that what the Lord had spoken through the prophet came true: 23“The virgin will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel,” which means “God is with us.”
24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him to do. He took Mary to be his wife. 25He did not have marital relations with her before she gave birth to a son. Joseph named the child Jesus.
