Isaiah 45
45
XLV
1Thus saith Jehovah to his Anointed, to Cyrus,
Whom I hold fast by his right hand;
To subdue nations before him,
And ungird the loins of kings;
To open before him the two-leaved gates:
And the gates shall not be shut.
2I will go before thee,
And make the crooked places straight:
I will break in pieces the gates of brass.
And cut in sunder the bars of iron.
3And I will give thee the treasures of darkness,
And the stores deeply hidden in secret places;
That thou mayest know that I am Jehovah,
He who calleth thee by thy name, the God of Israel.
4For Jacob my servant’s sake,
And Israel my chosen,
I have even called thee by thy name;
I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me.
5I am Jehovah, and there is none else;
There is no God beside me:
I girded thee, though thou knewest me not;
6That men may know from the rising of the sun,
And from the west, that there is none beside me;
I am Jehovah, and there is none else:
7I form light, and create darkness;
I make peace, and create evil:
I Jehovah do all these things.
8Drop down, ye heavens, from above;
And let the clouds shower down righteousness;
Let the earth open her bosom, and let them bring forth salvation,
And let righteousness spring up together:
I Jehovah have created it.
9Wo unto him that striveth with his Maker!
Let a potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth.
Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou?
Or thy work; He hath no hands?
10Wo unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou?
Or to the woman, What dost thou bring forth?
11Thus saith Jehovah,
The Holy One of Israel, and his Maker:
Of things to come ask me;
But over my sons, and over the work of my hands, let me have the command.
12I have made the earth,
And created man upon it:
I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens,
And to all the host of them I have given command.
13I have raised him up in righteousness,
And I will make straight all his ways:
He shall build my city, and release my captives,
Not for price, nor for reward:
Saith Jehovah of hosts.
14Thus saith Jehovah:
The labour of Egypt, the merchandise of Cush,
And of the Sabeans, men of stature;
Shall come over unto thee, and shall be thine:
They shall follow thee; in chains shall they pass along,
And they shall bow down unto thee;
They shall make supplication unto thee, saying:
Surely God is in thee, and there is none else;
There is no God besides.
15Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself;
O God of Israel, the Saviour!
16They are ashamed, and also confounded, all of them;
They retire in confusion together that are makers of images.
17 But Israel shall be saved through Jehovah with an everlasting salvation:
Ye shall not be ashamed, nor confounded, world without end.
18For thus saith Jehovah who created the heavens;
He himself is the God who formed the earth, and made it; it was He that hath established it;
He created it not in vain; He formed it to be inhabited:
I am Jehovah, and there is none else.
19I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth;
I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain:
I, Jehovah, speak the truth: I declare the things that are right
20Assemble yourselves and come;
Gather yourselves together, ye that are escaped of the nations:
They have no knowledge that carry about the wood of their graven image,
And pray to a god that cannot save.
21Publish it abroad, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together:
Who hath made this known from ancient time, hath declared it of old?
Was it not I, Jehovah? besides me there is no God;
A just God, and a Saviour; there is none beside me.
22Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth:
For I am God, and there is none else.
23I have sworn by myself, the truth is gone out of my mouth;
The word, and it shall not be revoked:
That unto me every knee shall bow,
Every tongue shall swear.
24Only in Jehovah, shall one say of me, is righteousness and strength;
To Him shall men come,
And all that are incensed against Him shall be ashamed.
25In Jehovah shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

God Uses Cyrus
1This is what the Lord says to Cyrus His anointed,
Whom I have taken by the right hand,
To subdue nations before him
And #45:1 Lit I will looseto undo the weapons belt on the waist of kings;
To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut:
2“I will go before you and make the #45:2 Another reading is mountainsrough places smooth;
I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars.
3“I will give you the #45:3 Or hoarded treasurestreasures of darkness
And hidden wealth of secret places,
So that you may know that it is I,
The Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.
4“For the sake of Jacob My servant,
And Israel My chosen one,
I have also called you by your name;
I have given you a title of honor
Though you have not known Me.
5“I am the Lord, and there is no one else;
There is no God except Me.
I will #45:5 Or embracearm you, though you have not known Me,
6So that people may know from the rising to the setting of the sun
That there is no one besides Me.
I am the Lord, and there is no one else,
7The One forming light and creating darkness,
Causing #45:7 Or peacewell-being and creating disaster;
I am the Lord who does all these things.
God’s Supreme Power
8¶“Drip down, heavens, from above,
And let the clouds pour down righteousness;
Let the earth open up and salvation bear fruit,
And righteousness sprout with it.
I, the Lord, have created it.
9¶“Woe to the one who quarrels with #45:9 Lit He who formed himhis Maker—
A piece of pottery #45:9 Lit withamong the other earthenware pottery pieces!
Will the clay say to the #45:9 Lit he who formed himpotter, ‘What are you doing?’
Or the thing you are making say, ‘He has no hands’?
10“Woe to him who says to a father, ‘What are you fathering?’
Or to a woman, ‘To what are you #45:10 Lit in labor pains withgiving birth?’ ”
11This is what the Lord says, the Holy One of Israel and #45:11 Lit He who formed himhis Maker:
“#45:11 Or Will you askAsk Me about the things to come #45:11 Or uponconcerning My sons,
And you shall commit to Me the work of My hands.
12“It is I who made the earth, and created mankind upon it.
I stretched out the heavens with My hands,
And I #45:12 Or commandedordained all their #45:12 Lit host; i.e., sun, stars, etc.lights.
13“I have stirred him in righteousness,
And I will make all his ways smooth.
He will build My city and let My exiles go free,
Without any payment or reward,” says the Lord of armies.
14This is what the Lord says:
“The #45:14 Lit laborproducts of Egypt and the merchandise of #45:14 Or EthiopiaCush
And the Sabeans, men of stature,
Will come over to you and will be yours;
They will walk behind you, they will come over in chains
And will bow down to you;
They will plead with you:
‘#45:14 Or God is with you aloneGod certainly is #45:14 Or inwith you, and there is no one else,
No other God.’ ”
15Truly, You are a God who hides Himself,
God of Israel, Savior!
16They will be put to shame and even humiliated, all of them;
The manufacturers of idols will go away together in humiliation.
17Israel has been saved by the Lord
With an everlasting salvation;
You will not be put to shame or humiliated
To all eternity.
18For this is what the Lord says, He who created the heavens (He is the God who formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it #45:18 LXX in vainas a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited):
“I am the Lord, and there is no one else.
19“I have not spoken in secret,
In #45:19 Lit a place of a land of darknesssome dark land;
I did not say to the #45:19 Lit seedoffspring of Jacob,
‘Seek Me in #45:19 Or vaina wasteland’;
I, the Lord, speak righteousness,
Declaring things that are right.
20¶“Gather yourselves and come;
Come together, you survivors of the nations!
They have no knowledge,
Who carry around #45:20 Lit the wood of their carved imagetheir wooden idol
And pray to a god who cannot save.
21“Declare and present your case;
Indeed, let them consult together.
Who has announced this long ago?
Who has long since declared it?
Is it not I, the Lord?
And there is no other God besides Me,
A righteous God and a Savior;
There is none except Me.
22“Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth;
For I am God, and there is no other.
23“I have sworn by Myself;
The word has gone out from My mouth in righteousness
And will not turn back,
That to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance.
24“They will say of Me, ‘Only in the Lord are righteousness and strength.’
People will come to Him,
And all who were angry at Him will be put to shame.
25“In the Lord all the offspring of Israel
Will be justified and will boast.”
