Isaiah 34
34
XXXIV
1Come near, ye nations, to hear;
And hearken, ye people:
Let the earth hear, and the fulness thereof;
The world, and all things that spring from it.
2For the indignation of Jehovah is upon all nations,
And his fury upon all their armies:
He hath devoted them, he hath given them up to the slaughter.
3And their slain shall he cast out,
And from their carcases their stench shall ascend;
And the mountains shall melt with their blood.
4And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved.
And the heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll;
And all their host shall fall down
As the leaf falleth off from the vine:
And as the falling of a fig from a fig-tree.
5For my sword hath already been made drunk in the heavens:
Behold, on Edom it shall descend;
And on the people justly devoted by me to destruction.
6The sword of Jehovah is glutted with blood,
It is made fat with fatness:
With the blood of lambs and of goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams:
For Jehovah hath a sacrifice in Bozrah,
And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7And with them shall be slaughtered the buffaloes,
And the bullocks with the bulls;
So that their land shall be drunk with blood,
And their dust made fat with fatness.
8For to Jehovah there is a day of vengeance,
A year of recompence for the vindication of Zion.
9And her streams shall be turned into pitch,
And her dust into brimstone;
And her land shall become burning pitch.
10By night or by day it shall not be extinguished,
For ever shall her smoke ascend:
From generation to generation she shall lie waste,
To everlasting ages no one shall pass through her.
11But the pelican and the porcupine shall possess it;
The owl also and the raven shall dwell in it:
And He shall stretch over her the line of devastation,
And the plummet of destruction.
12As for her nobles, there is not one there whom they might call to the government of the kingdom;
And all her princes are nothingness.
13And in her palaces shall spring up thorns;
The nettle and the bramble, in her fortresses:
And she shall be an habitation for jackals,
A dwelling-place for the daughters of the ostrich.
14And the wild cats shall meet the jackals,
And the satyr shall call to his fellow:
There also the screech owl shall resort,
And find for herself a place of rest.
15There shall the darting serpent make her nest, and lay her eggs:
And she shall hatch them, and gather her young under her shadow.
There also shall the vultures be gathered together,
Each one with her mate.
16Seek ye out of the book of Jehovah, and read:
No one of these hath been missing,
No female hath lacked her mate;
For my mouth it hath commanded,
And his Spirit it hath gathered them.
17And he hath cast the lot for them,
And his hand hath divided it for them with the line:
They shall possess it for ever;
From generation to generation shall they dwell therein.

Isaiah 34
34
God Judges His Enemies
1Come close to me, you nations, and listen!
Pay attention to me, you peoples!
Let all the world hear me,
the earth and all that springs from it.
2For Yahweh has turned his anger toward the nations
and his fury against all their armies.
He has doomed them to destruction
and will annihilate them all.
3Their slain will be cast out,
the stench of their corpses will rise,
and the mountains will stream with their blood.
4The heavenly powers # 34:4 Or “The host of heaven,” which can refer to demonic powers. See 2 Kings 17:16; 21:3, 5; 23:4–5; Eph. 6:10–18. will fade away to nothing, # 34:4 The Dead Sea scroll 1QIsaa adds “and the valleys will be split open.”
and the heavens will be rolled up like a scroll.
All their mighty host will wither
as leaves fall from a withered vine
or fruit from a withering fig tree. # 34:4 See Matt. 24:29; Rev. 6:13–14.
5The Lord says:
“Indeed, my judgment-sword has appeared in the heavens, # 34:5 As translated from the Dead Sea scroll 1QIsaa. The Hebrew is “My sword is drenched in the heavens.”
and when it has drunk its fill,
you will see it descend on the people of Edom,
those whom I have doomed to judgment.”
6Lord Yahweh has a judgment-sword dripping with blood.
It is smeared with fat,
dripping with the blood of lambs and goats,
and covered with the fat of rams’ kidneys.
Lord Yahweh has a sacrifice in Bozrah # 34:6 Bozrah (modern Busaira) was the capital of Edom. See Isa. 63:1–6; Jer. 49:13; Amos 1:12. Bozrah means “sheepfold.” The sacrifice the Lord offered in the sheepfold can point to the supreme sacrifice of Jesus, the Lamb of God.
and a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
7Cattle and young bulls will also be slain; # 34:7 This is likely aurochs, an extinct species of wild cattle.
their land will be drenched # 34:7 Or “drunk.” with blood
and the dust soaked with fat.
8For Lord Yahweh has a day of vengeance,
a year of vindication for Zion’s cause.
9Edom’s streams will be turned to pitch and its soil to sulfur;
her land will become blazing pitch.
10Night and day it will never be extinguished;
its smoke will go up forever and ever.
Through the endless ages it will lie desolate;
no one will pass through it forever.
11Nothing but desert hawks and wild animals # 34:11 The exact identities of the animals listed here are uncertain. Some translations include hedgehogs, pelicans, porcupines, hawks, and several types of owls. will live there;
owls and ravens will find a home there.
The Lord will stretch out over it a measuring line of chaos
and the plumb line of emptiness.
12It will be named No Kingdom There,
and all its rulers and princes will come to nothing. # 34:12 See 1 Cor. 2:8; Eph. 6:12.
13Its palaces will be overgrown with thorns,
its fortresses # 34:13 See 2 Cor. 10:3–6. with thistles and briars.
It will become a haunt for demons # 34:13 Or “dragons” or “jackals.” and an abode for owls. # 34:13 The Hebrew word for “owls” is uncertain.
14Wild beasts will mingle with wolves
and goat-demons # 34:14 Or “satyrs.” will howl to one another.
There too the night-demon # 34:14 Or “Lilith,” a female goddess known as the sexually perverse “night-demon.” The Dead Sea Scroll 4Q510-511 lists Lilith among other demonic monsters. will settle in and find her rest.
15There the arrow-snake will build her nest, lay her eggs,
and hatch her brood in the shadows.
There too the vultures will gather # 34:15 See Matt. 24:28. to breed.
16Seek for Yahweh’s book and read it carefully.
You will learn that none of these prophecies will fail;
none will lack a fulfillment as its companion.
For the Lord has issued his decree.
It is his Spirit that has gathered them.
17He is the one who apportioned it to them by lot,
whose hand measured the share of each. # 34:17 See Eph. 4:7, 11.
They will possess it for all time
and dwell there throughout the ages.
