Isaiah 3
3
III
1For, behold, the Lord, Jehovah of hosts,
Removeth from Jerusalem, and from Judah,
Every stay and support;
The whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water:
2The mighty man, and the warrior;
The judge, and the prophet, and the diviner, and the elder:
3The captain of fifty, and the honourable man;
And the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the skilful in incantation.
4And I will set boys for their princes;
And children shall rule over them.
5And the people shall be oppressed;
This man by that man, and that man by his neighbour:
They shall behave themselves insolently, the boy towards the old man;
And the base towards the honourable.
6Then should a man lay hold on his brother, of the house of his father,
Saying, thou hast raiment; be thou ruler over us,
And take this ruin under thy hand:
7He shall swear in that day, saying,
I cannot be the healer;
For in my house is neither bread nor raiment:
Appoint not me a ruler of the people.
8For Jerusalem tottereth, and Judah falleth; Because their tongue and their deeds are against
Jehovah;
To provoke his glorious eyes.
9The shamelessness of their countenances witnesseth against them;
And they speak openly of their sin, like Sodom, they hide it not:
Wo unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.
10Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him;
For the fruit of his deeds shall he eat.
11Wo unto the wicked, it shall be ill with him;
For the reward of his hands shall be given him.
12As for my people, children are their oppressors;
And women rule over them.
O my people, thy leaders cause thee to err;
And the way of thy paths, they pervert.
13 Jehovah ariseth to plead his cause;
He standeth to judge the people.
14 Jehovah will enter into judgment
With the elders of his people and their princes:
For ye have consumed the vineyard,
The plunder of the poor is in your houses.
15What mean ye that ye crush my people,
And grind the faces of the poor?
Saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.
16Moreover Jehovah hath said:
Because the daughters of Zion ore haughty;
And walk displaying the neck,
And leering with their eyes,
Walking and mincing as they go,
And making a tinkling with their feet.
17Therefore will the Lord smite with a scab the head of the daughters of Zion;
And Jehovah will expose their nakedness.
18In that day will the Lord remove the splendour of the foot-ornaments,
And the caps of network, and the crescents;
19The ear-pendents, and the bracelets, and the thin veils;
20The head-dress, and the ornaments of the legs, and the girdles,
And the perfume-boxes, and the amulets;
21The rings, and the jewels of the nose;
22The embroidered robes, and the tunics;
And the cloaks, and the sachels;
23The transparent garments, and the fine linen vests;
And the turbans, and the mantles.
24And it shall come to pass, that instead of perfume there shall be a stench;
And instead of a girdle, a rope;
And instead of plaited hair, baldness;
And instead of a stomacher, a girding of sackcloth:
A sunburnt skin, instead of beauty.
25Thy men shall fall by the sword;
And thy mighty in the war,
26And her gates shall lament and mourn;
And destitute shall she sit upon the ground.

Isaiah 3
3
God Will Punish Judah and Jerusalem
1Understand what I am telling you.
The Master, the Lord of heaven’s armies,
will take away everything Judah and Jerusalem need.
He will take away all the food and water.
2He will take away all the heroes and great soldiers.
He will take away all the judges, prophets,
people who do magic and elders.
3He will take away the military leaders and government leaders.
He will take away the counselors, the skilled craftsmen and those who try to tell the future.
4The Lord says, “I will cause young boys to be your leaders.
Foolish children will rule over you.
5Everyone will be against everyone else.
Young people will not respect older people.
Common people will not respect important people.”
6At that time a man will grab one of his brothers
from his own family and say,
“You have a coat. So you will be our leader.
You will be the leader over all these ruins.”
7But that brother will stand up and say,
“I cannot help you.
I do not have food or clothes in my house.
You will not make me your leader.”
8This will happen because Jerusalem has stumbled
and Judah has fallen.
The things they say and do are against the Lord.
They sin openly against the Lord.
9The look on their faces shows they are guilty of doing wrong.
Like the people of Sodom, they are proud of their sin.
They don’t care who sees it.
How terrible it will be for them!
They have brought much trouble to themselves.
10Tell the good people that good things will happen to them.
They will receive a reward for the good they do.
11But how terrible it will be for wicked people!
They will be punished for all the wrong they have done.
12Children treat my people cruelly.
Women rule over them.
My people, your guides lead you in the wrong way.
They turn you away from what is right.
13The Lord takes his place in court.
He stands to judge the people.
14The Lord presents his case
against the elders and other leaders of his people.
He says, “You have burned my vineyard.
Your houses are full of what you took from the poor.
15What gives you the right to crush my people?
How can you grind the faces of the poor into the dirt?”
The Master, the Lord of heaven’s armies, said this.
A Warning to Women of Jerusalem
16The Lord says,
“The women of Jerusalem are proud.
They walk around with their heads held high.
They flirt with their eyes.
They take quick, short steps,
making noise with their ankle bracelets.”
17So the Lord will put sores on the heads of those women in Jerusalem.
He will make them lose all their hair.
18At that time the Lord will take away everything that makes them proud. He will take away their beautiful ankle bracelets, their headbands and their necklaces shaped like the moon. 19He will take away their earrings, bracelets and veils. 20He will take away their scarves, ankle chains, the cloth belts worn around their waists, their bottles of perfume and charms. 21He will take away their signet rings, nose rings, 22their fine robes, capes, shawls and purses. 23And he will take away their mirrors, linen dresses, turbans and long shawls.
24Instead of having sweet-smelling perfume, they will stink.
Instead of fine cloth belts, they will have ropes of captives to wear.
Instead of having their hair fixed in fancy ways, they will be bald.
Instead of fine clothes, they will have rough clothes of sadness.
Instead of having beauty, they will have the brand of a captive.
25At that time your men will be killed with swords.
Your heroes will die in war.
26There will be crying and sadness in the meeting places near the city gates.
Jerusalem will be like a woman who has lost everything and sits on the ground.
