Isaiah 29
29
XXIX
1Wo to Ariel, to Ariel,
The city where David dwelt!
Add ye year to year;
Let the feasts go round in their course.
2Yet I will bring distress upon Ariel;
And there shall be mourning and sorrow:
And it shall be unto me as Ariel.
3And I will encamp against thee round about,
And I will distress thee by a garrison;
And I will erect bulwarks against thee.
4And thou shalt be brought low; and thou shalt speak out of the ground,
And from out of the dust shall thy speech be heard in a low tone;
And thy voice shall come out of the ground, like that of a necromancer:
And from out of the dust shall thy speech whisper.
5Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust,
And like the flitting chaff the multitude of the terrible ones;
Yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly.
6From Jehovah of hosts cometh the visitation,
With thunder, and earthquake, and a mighty voice;
With storm, and tempest, and flame of devouring fire.
7And like a dream, a night vision, shall be
The multitude of all the nations,
That fight against Ariel;
Even all that fight against her, and her fortresses,
And that distress her.
8It shall even be,
As when a hungry man dreameth, and behold, he eateth;
But he awaketh, and his soul is empty:
Or, as when a thirsty man dreameth, and behold, he drinketh;
But he awaketh, and behold, he is faint; and his soul hath a craving desire:
So shall the multitude of all nations be,
That fight against mount Zion.
9Stare ye now, and wonder!
Be ye dazzled and blinded!
They are drunken, but not with wine;
They stagger, but not with strong drink.
10For Jehovah hath poured out upon you a spirit of deep sleep,
And he hath closed up your eyes:
The prophets, and your rulers, the seers hath he blindfolded.
11So that the whole vision is to you like the words of a sealed book,
Which men deliver to one that knoweth letters,
Saying, Read this, I pray thee;
And he saith, I cannot, for it is sealed up:
12And the book is delivered to one that knoweth not letters,
Saying, Read this, I pray thee;
And he saith, I know not letters.
13Wherefore the Lord hath said:
Forasmuch as this people draw near me
With their mouth, and with their lips do honour me,
But have removed their heart far from me;
And their fear of me is a precept taught of men:
14Therefore, behold, I will proceed to deal wonderfully
With this people; so wonderfully and astonishingly,
That the wisdom of the wise shall perish.
And the understanding of the prudent shall disappear.
15Wo unto them that seek with deep cunning to hide their counsel from Jehovah;
Whose deeds are in the dark;
And they say,
Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?
16O your perverseness!
Shall the potter be esteemed as the day?
Shall the work say of the workman, He hath not made me?
And shall the thing formed say of the former of it, He hath no understanding?
17Is it not yet a very little while,
And Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field,
And the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?
18And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of this book;
And out of obscurity, and out of darkness,
Shall the eyes of the blind see.
19The meek also shall increase their joy in Jehovah;
And the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20For the oppressor hath ceased, and the scoffer is no more;
And all that were watching to do evil are utterly cut off:
21They who would bring in a man guilty for a word,
And lay snare for him when pleading his cause in the gate;
And for nought turn aside the just.
22Wherefore thus saith Jehovah to the house of Jacob,
He who hath redeemed Abraham:
Jacob shall no more be ashamed,
Neither shall his face any more wax pale:
23For when his children shall see the work of my hands in the midst of themselves,
They shall sanctify my name:
Yea, they shall sanctify the Holy One of Jacob,
And shall fear the God of Israel.
24They also that have erred in spirit shall be full of understanding,
And murmurers shall learn knowledge.

Isaiah 29

Jerusalem Is Warned
1Woe, #29:1 I.e., Lion of God, or JerusalemAriel, #29:1 I.e., Lion of God, or JerusalemAriel the city where David once camped!
Add year to year, #29:1 Lit let your feasts run their roundkeep your feasts on schedule.
2I will bring distress to Ariel,
And she will be a city of grieving and mourning;
And she will be like an #29:2 Ariel (i.e., Jerusalem) is a Heb word for “altar hearth” where offerings were burnedAriel to me.
3I will camp against you #29:3 Lit like a circleencircling you,
And I will set up siegeworks against you,
And I will raise up battle towers against you.
4Then you will be brought low;
From the earth you will speak,
And from the dust where you are prostrate
Your words will come.
Your voice will also be like that of a #29:4 Or ghostspirit from the ground,
And your speech will whisper from the dust.
5¶But the multitude of your #29:5 Lit strangersenemies will become like fine dust,
And the multitude of the ruthless ones like the chaff which #29:5 Lit passes awayblows away;
And it will happen instantly, suddenly.
6From the Lord of armies you will be punished with thunder and earthquake and loud noise,
With whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a consuming fire.
7And the multitude of all the nations who wage war against #29:7 See note 1 v 1Ariel,
Even all who wage war against her and her stronghold, and who distress her,
Will be like a dream, a vision of the night.
8It will be as when a hungry person dreams—
And behold, he is eating;
But when he awakens, his #29:8 Lit soulhunger is not satisfied,
Or as when a thirsty person dreams—
And behold, he is drinking,
But when he awakens, behold, he is faint
And his #29:8 Lit soulthirst is not quenched.
So will the multitude of all the nations be
Who wage war against Mount Zion.
9¶Be delayed and horrified,
Blind yourselves and be blind;
They become drunk, but not with wine,
They stagger, but not with intoxicating drink.
10For the Lord has poured over you a spirit of deep sleep,
He has shut your eyes—the prophets;
And He has covered your heads—the seers.
11The entire vision will be to you like the words of a sealed #29:11 Or scrollbook, which, when they give it to the one who #29:11 Lit knows booksis literate, saying, “Please read this,” he will say, “I cannot, because it is sealed.” 12Then the #29:12 Or scrollbook will be given to the one who #29:12 Lit does not know booksis illiterate, saying, “Please read this.” And he will say, “I #29:12 Lit do not know bookscannot read.”
13Then the Lord said,
“Because this people approaches Me with their #29:13 Lit mouthwords
And honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far away from Me,
And their #29:13 Lit fear of Mereverence for Me #29:13 Lit isconsists of the commandment of men that is taught;
14Therefore behold, I will once again deal marvelously with this people, wondrously marvelous;
And the wisdom of their wise men will perish,
And the understanding of their men who have understanding will be concealed.”
15¶Woe to those who deeply hide their #29:15 Lit counselplans from the Lord,
And whose deeds are done in a dark place,
And they say, “Who sees us?” or “Who knows us?”
16You turn things around!
Shall the potter be considered #29:16 Lit likeas equal with the clay,
That what is made would say to its maker, “He did not make me”;
Or what is formed say to him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?
Blessing after Discipline
17¶Is it not yet just a little while
# 29:17 Lit And Before Lebanon will be turned into a fertile field,
And the fertile field will be considered as a forest?
18On that day those who are deaf will hear words of a book,
And out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of those who are blind will see.
19The afflicted also will increase their joy in the Lord,
And the needy of mankind will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20For the ruthless will come to an end and the scorner will be finished,
Indeed all who #29:20 Lit watch evilare intent on doing evil will be eliminated,
21Who #29:21 Lit bring a person under condemnationcause a person to be indicted by a word,
And set a trap for the arbitrator at the gate,
And #29:21 Lit turn asidedefraud the one in the right with #29:21 Lit confusionmeaningless arguments.
22Therefore this is what the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, says concerning the house of Jacob:
“Jacob will not be ashamed now, nor will his face turn pale now;
23But when #29:23 Or his children seehe sees his children, the work of My hands, in his midst,
They will sanctify My name;
Indeed, they will sanctify the Holy One of Jacob,
And will stand in awe of the God of Israel.
24“Those who err in #29:24 Lit spiritmind will know #29:24 Lit understandingthe truth,
And those who #29:24 Lit murmurcriticize will #29:24 Lit learnaccept instruction.
