The Letter to the Church in Sardis
1“Write this to the angel of the church in Sardis:
These are the words of the one who holds the seven spirits of God and has the seven stars in his hand.
‘I know what you’ve been doing. You have a reputation for being alive, but you’re dead. 2Wake up! Strengthen what’s left and is about to die. I haven’t found that you’ve done everything my God wants you to do. 3So remember what you’ve been taught and what you’ve heard. Hold firmly to it and turn away from your sins. If you don’t wake up, I’ll come like a thief, and you won’t know when I’m coming to you.
4‘But you have a few people there in Sardis who haven’t gotten their clothes dirty. They will walk with me dressed in white, because they deserve to. 5If anyone wins the victory, I’ll give that person white clothes to wear, and I’ll never erase their name from the book of life. I’ll speak of them by name to my Father and his angels. 6Whoever has ears should listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.’
The Letter to the Church in Philadelphia
7“Write this to the angel of the church in Philadelphia:
These are the words of the one who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. No one can shut what he opens, and no one can open what he shuts.
8‘I know what you’ve been doing. Look! I’ve opened a door in front of you, and no one can shut it. I know you don’t have much strength, but you’ve obeyed my word, and you haven’t denied me. 9Some people claim that they’re Jews, but they’re not. They’re lying. They’re a synagogue of Satan. I’m going to make those people come and fall down at your feet and admit in public that I have loved you. 10You’ve kept my command to remain strong in the faith no matter what happens, so I’m going to keep you from the time of suffering that the rest of the world is going to experience. That suffering will test those who live on the earth.
11‘I’m coming soon. Hold on to what you have so that no one will take away your crown. 12If anyone wins the victory, I’ll make that person a pillar in the temple of my God. They’ll never leave it again. On them I’ll write the name of my God and the name of his city, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down from him out of heaven. I’ll also write my new name on them. 13Whoever has ears should listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.’
The Letter to the Church in Laodicea
14“Write this to the angel of the church in Laodicea:
The Amen speaks these words. He is the faithful and true witness, the ruler over God’s creation.
15‘I know what you’ve been doing. I know you’re not cold and you’re not hot. I wish you were one or the other! 16But you’re lukewarm—you’re not hot or cold. So I’m going to spit you out of my mouth. 17You say, “I’m rich, I’ve become wealthy, and I don’t need anything.” But you don’t realize that you’re pitiful, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. 18So here’s my advice. Buy gold from me that has been purified by fire. Then you’ll become rich. Buy white clothes from me that you can wear to cover the shame of your naked bodies. And buy healing lotion from me to put on your eyes so that you’ll be able to see.
19‘I warn and correct those I love. So be eager to do what’s right and turn away from your sins. 20Here I am! I’ll keep standing at the door and knocking. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I’ll come in and eat with that person, and they’ll eat with me.
21‘If anyone wins the victory, I’ll give that person the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I won the victory and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22Whoever has ears should listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.’ ”
