John the Baptist is Killed
1At that time Herod, the ruler of Galilee and Perea, heard reports about Jesus. 2He told his officials, “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead! That’s why he has the power to do miracles.”
3-4Earlier, Herod had arrested John and tied him up and put him in prison. This was because John had been telling Herod, “It’s against the Law of Moses for you to have Herodias as your wife,” since she’d been the wife of Herod’s brother Philip. 5Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they thought John was a prophet.
6But on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced for Herod and his guests, and she pleased Herod very much. 7He promised to give her anything she asked for. 8Her mother got her to say, “Give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 9The king was very upset, but because he’d made his promise in front of his dinner guests, he gave her what she asked for. 10Herod had John’s head cut off in prison, 11and it was carried in on a platter and given to the girl. She then took it to her mother. 12John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
Jesus Feeds Five Thousand
13When Jesus heard what had happened, he went by himself in a boat to a remote place. When the crowds learned he was coming, they came out of their towns and walked over to where he would land. 14When Jesus got to shore, he found a large crowd waiting for him. Moved with compassion for them, he healed their sick people.
15When it was almost evening, the disciples came to him. “We’re in the middle of nowhere,” they told him, “and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy some food.”
16Jesus answered, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17“We only have five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18“Bring them here to me,” Jesus responded. 19Then he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and gave thanks for them. Then he broke them into pieces and gave them to the disciples, who gave them to the people. 20Everyone ate as much as they wanted, and afterwards the disciples picked up 12 full baskets of leftover pieces. 21Just counting the men, they fed about 5,000 people, and there were many women and children as well.
Jesus Walks on Water
22Afterwards Jesus made the disciples get right into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side of the lake while he said goodbye to the crowd. 23Once the crowd was gone, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was still up there alone. 24Then the boat the disciples were in was a long way from land. It started being pounded by the waves, because the wind was blowing against it.
25Shortly before dawn, Jesus went out to the disciples, walking on the lake. 26When they saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they exclaimed, crying out in fear.
27But Jesus called out to them right away, “Don’t worry; it’s me! Don’t be afraid.”
28“If it’s really you, Lord,” Peter said, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29“Come,” Jesus said.
So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30But when Peter saw the power of the wind, he got frightened and began to sink. “Lord!” he cried out, “save me!”
31Jesus reached right out with his hand and caught him. “You have such little faith!” he said. “Why did you doubt?”
32When they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33Then those in the boat worshiped Jesus, saying, “You’re the Son of God!”
34They crossed over the lake and landed at Gennesaret. 35The people who lived there recognized Jesus and sent word all over the nearby countryside. They brought all the sick to Jesus 36and begged him to let them just touch a tassel on his clothes. Everyone who did so was healed.

CHAPTER 14
1In that time Herod tetrarch, [that is, prince of the fourth part], heard the fame of Jesus;
2and said to his children, This is John Baptist, he is risen from death, and therefore virtues work in him.
3For Herod had holden [or held] John, and bound him, and putted him in prison for Herodias, the wife of his brother.
4For John said to him, It is not leaveful to thee to have her.
5And he willing to slay him, dreaded the people; for they had him as a prophet.
6But in the day of Herod’s birth, the daughter of Herodias danced in the middle, and pleased Herod.
7Wherefore with an oath he promised to give to her, whatever thing she asked of him.
8And she before-warned [or before admonished] of her mother, said, Give thou to me here the head of John Baptist in a dish.
9And the king was sorrowful, but for the oath, and for them that sat together at the meat, he commanded to be given.
10And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.
11And his head was brought in a dish, and it was given to the damsel, and she bare it to her mother.
12And his disciples came, and took his body, and buried it; and they came, and told to Jesus.
13And when Jesus had heard this thing, he went from thence in a boat, into a desert place beside. And when the people had heard, they followed him on their feet from cities.
14And Jesus went out, and saw a great people [or a great multitude], and had ruth on them, and he healed the sick men of them.
15But when eventide was come, his disciples came to him, and said, The place is desert, and the time is now passed; let the people go into towns, to buy them meat.
16Jesus said to them, They have not need [or no need] to go; give ye them somewhat to eat.
17They answered, We have not here, but five loaves and two fishes.
18And he said to them, Bring ye them hither to me.
19And when he had commanded the people to sit to [the] meat on the hay, he took five loaves and two fishes, and he beheld into heaven, and blessed, and brake, and gave [loaves] to his disciples; and the disciples gave to the people.
20And all ate, and were fulfilled [or filled]. And they took the remnants of broken gobbets, twelve coffins full.
21And the number of men that ate was five thousand of men, without women and little children.
22And anon Jesus compelled the disciples to go up into a boat, and [to] go before him over the sea, while he let go the people.
23And when the people was let go, he went up alone into an hill to pray. But when the evening was come, he was there alone.
24And the boat in the middle of the sea was shogged [or thrown] with waves, for the wind was contrary to them.
25But in the fourth waking of the night, he came to them walking on the sea.
26And they, seeing him walking on the sea, were disturbed [or distroubled], and said, That it is a phantom; and for dread they cried.
27And anon Jesus spake to them, and said, Have ye trust, I am; do not ye dread.
28And Peter answered, and said, Lord, if thou art, command me to come to thee on the waters.
29And he said, Come thou. And Peter went down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus.
30But he saw the wind strong, and was afeared; and when he began to drench or drown, he cried, and said, Lord, make me safe.
31And anon Jesus held forth his hand, and took Peter, [or caught him], and said to him, Thou of little faith, why hast thou doubted?
32And when he had gone [up] into the boat, the wind ceased.
33And they, that were in the boat, came, and worshipped him, and said, Verily, thou art God’s Son.
34And when they had passed over the sea, they came into the land of Gennesaret.
35And when men of that place had known him, they sent into all that country; and they brought to him all that had sicknesses [or all having evil].
36And they prayed him, that they should touch the hem of his clothing; and whoever touched were made safe.
