Matthew 14

14
John the Baptist is Killed
1At that time Herod, the ruler of Galilee and Perea, heard reports about Jesus. 2He told his officials, “This is John the Baptist. He has risen from the dead! That’s why he has the power to do miracles.”
3-4Earlier, Herod had arrested John and tied him up and put him in prison. This was because John had been telling Herod, “It’s against the Law of Moses for you to have Herodias as your wife,” since she’d been the wife of Herod’s brother Philip. 5Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they thought John was a prophet.
6But on Herod’s birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced for Herod and his guests, and she pleased Herod very much. 7He promised to give her anything she asked for. 8Her mother got her to say, “Give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 9The king was very upset, but because he’d made his promise in front of his dinner guests, he gave her what she asked for. 10Herod had John’s head cut off in prison, 11and it was carried in on a platter and given to the girl. She then took it to her mother. 12John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
Jesus Feeds Five Thousand
13When Jesus heard what had happened, he went by himself in a boat to a remote place. When the crowds learned he was coming, they came out of their towns and walked over to where he would land. 14When Jesus got to shore, he found a large crowd waiting for him. Moved with compassion for them, he healed their sick people.
15When it was almost evening, the disciples came to him. “We’re in the middle of nowhere,” they told him, “and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away so they can go to the villages and buy some food.”
16Jesus answered, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
17“We only have five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
18“Bring them here to me,” Jesus responded. 19Then he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and gave thanks for them. Then he broke them into pieces and gave them to the disciples, who gave them to the people. 20Everyone ate as much as they wanted, and afterwards the disciples picked up 12 full baskets of leftover pieces. 21Just counting the men, they fed about 5,000 people, and there were many women and children as well.
Jesus Walks on Water
22Afterwards Jesus made the disciples get right into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side of the lake while he said goodbye to the crowd. 23Once the crowd was gone, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was still up there alone. 24Then the boat the disciples were in was a long way from land. It started being pounded by the waves, because the wind was blowing against it.
25Shortly before dawn, Jesus went out to the disciples, walking on the lake. 26When they saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost!” they exclaimed, crying out in fear.
27But Jesus called out to them right away, “Don’t worry; it’s me! Don’t be afraid.”
28“If it’s really you, Lord,” Peter said, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
29“Come,” Jesus said.
So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30But when Peter saw the power of the wind, he got frightened and began to sink. “Lord!” he cried out, “save me!”
31Jesus reached right out with his hand and caught him. “You have such little faith!” he said. “Why did you doubt?”
32When they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33Then those in the boat worshiped Jesus, saying, “You’re the Son of God!”
34They crossed over the lake and landed at Gennesaret. 35The people who lived there recognized Jesus and sent word all over the nearby countryside. They brought all the sick to Jesus 36and begged him to let them just touch a tassel on his clothes. Everyone who did so was healed.
