Jesus Sends Out the 12 Disciples
1Jesus called for his 12 disciples and gave them authority to drive out demons and heal every kind of disease and sickness.
2Here are the names of the 12 apostles.
First, Simon (also called Peter) and his brother Andrew;
then James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
3Philip and Bartholomew;
Thomas and Matthew the tax collector;
James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
4Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus.
5Jesus sent these 12 out with the following orders. “Don’t go among the Gentiles and don’t enter any town where the Samaritans live. 6Instead, go to the lost sheep of Israel. 7As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near.’ 8Heal the sick, bring the dead back to life, make those who have skin diseases clean again, and drive out demons. You have received freely, so give freely.
9“Don’t take any gold, silver, or copper coins with you in your belts. 10Don’t bring a bag for the journey, or any extra clothes or sandals or a walking stick. A worker deserves to be given what’s needed. 11When you enter a town or village, look for a person who’s willing to welcome you, and stay at their house until you leave. 12As you enter their home, give it your blessing of peace. 13If the home deserves it, your peace will rest upon it; if it doesn’t deserve it, your peace will return to you. 14Some people may not welcome you or listen to your words. If they don’t, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. 15Truly I tell you, on judgment day it will be easier for Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.
16“I’m sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as wise as snakes and as harmless as doves. 17Be careful who you trust! You’ll be turned over to the local courts and whipped in the synagogues. 18You’ll be put on trial before governors and kings because of me, as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19But when they arrest you, don’t worry about what you’ll say or how to say it. You’ll be given the right words at the time. 20It won’t even be you speaking. The Spirit of your Father will be speaking through you.
21“Brothers will betray brothers to those who want to kill them, and fathers will betray their children. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 22Everyone will hate you because of me. But anyone who stands firm to the end will be saved. 23If people attack you in one place, escape to another. Truly I tell you, you won’t finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
24“The student isn’t greater than the teacher, and the slave isn’t greater than the master. 25It’s enough for students to be like their teachers and for slaves to be like their masters. If the head of the household has been called Beelzebul, the prince of demons, what should the others who live in the house expect to be called?
26“Don’t be afraid of your enemies. Everything that’s now secret will be brought out into the open and everything that’s hidden will be revealed. 27Repeat in the daylight what I tell you in the dark, and shout from the rooftops what is whispered in your ear. 28Don’t be afraid of those who kill the body but can’t kill the soul. Instead, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Aren’t two sparrows sold for only a penny? But not one of them falls to the ground without your Father being aware of it. 30He even knows every hair on your head! 31So don’t be afraid; you’re worth more than many sparrows.
32“If anyone tells others that they know me, I’ll tell my Father in heaven that I know them. 33But if anyone denies that they know me, I’ll tell my Father in heaven that I don’t know them.
34“Don’t think that I’ve come to bring peace to the earth. I haven’t come to bring peace, but a sword. 35I’ve come to turn
“ ‘sons against their fathers,
daughters against their mothers,
and daughters-in-law against their mothers-in-law.
36A man’s enemies will be the members of his own family.’
37“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me. Anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38Whoever doesn’t pick up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Whoever finds their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life because of me will find it.
40“Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41If someone welcomes a prophet because they’re a prophet, that person will receive a prophet’s reward. If someone welcomes a godly person because they’re godly, that person will receive a godly person’s reward. 42And if someone even gives a cup of cold water to a little one who follows me, truly I tell you, that person will be rewarded.”

The Twelve Disciples; Instructions for Service
1 Jesus summoned His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every sickness.
2Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew; and #10:2 Or JacobJames the son of Zebedee, and his brother #10:2 Gr Joannes, for Heb JohananJohn; 3Philip and #10:3 I.e., son of Talmai (Aram)Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; #10:3 Or JacobJames the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon the #10:4 Or CananaeanZealot, and Judas Iscariot, the one who also betrayed Him.
5These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them, saying, “Do not go on a road #10:5 Lit ofto Gentiles, and do not enter a city of Samaritans; 6but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7And as you go, #10:7 Or proclaimpreach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. 9Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, 10or a #10:10 Or knapsack; or beggar’s bagbag for your journey, or even two #10:10 A long shirt worn next to the skintunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is deserving of his #10:10 Lit nourishmentsupport. 11And whatever city or village you enter, inquire who is worthy in it, and stay #10:11 Lit there untilat his house until you leave that city. 12As you enter the #10:12 Or householdhouse, give it your #10:12 I.e., the familiar Heb blessing, “Peace be to this house!”greeting. 13If the house is worthy, see that your blessing of peace comes upon it. But if it is not worthy, #10:13 Lit your peace is to return to youtake back your blessing of peace. 14And whoever does not receive you nor listen to your words, as you leave that house or city, shake the dust off your feet. 15Truly I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment, than for that city.
A Hard Road Ahead of Them
16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be as wary as serpents, and as innocent as doves. 17But be on guard against people, for they will hand you over to the courts and flog you in their synagogues; 18and you will even be brought before governors and kings on My account, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19But when they hand you over, do not worry about how or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given you in that hour. 20For it is not you who are speaking, but it is the Spirit of your Father who is speaking #10:20 Or by youin you.
21 “Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and # 10:21 Lit put them to death cause them to be put to death. 22And you will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.
23 “But whenever they persecute you in # 10:23 Lit this one city, flee to the # 10:23 Lit other next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes.
The Meaning of Discipleship
24 “A # 10:24 Or student disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. 25It is enough for the disciple that he may become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house #10:25 Two early mss Beezebul; meaning uncertain, perhaps lord prince, referring to SatanBeelzebul, how much more will they insult the members of his household!
26 “So do not fear them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27What I tell you in the darkness, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim on the housetops. 28And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in #10:28 Gr Gehennahell. 29Are two sparrows not sold for an #10:29 A Roman copper coin, worth about 1/16 of a laborer’s daily wageassarion? And yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30But even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31So do not fear; you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows.
32 “Therefore, everyone who # 10:32 Lit will confess in Me confesses Me before people, I will also confess # 10:32 Lit in him him before My Father who is in heaven. 33But whoever denies Me before people, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.
34 “Do not think that I came to # 10:34 Lit cast bring peace on the earth; I did not come to # 10:34 Lit cast bring peace, but a sword. 35For I came to turn a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36and a person’s enemies will be the members of his household.
37 “The one who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and the one who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38And the one who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39The one who has found his #10:39 Or soullife will lose it, and the one who has lost his #10:39 Or soullife on My account will find it.
The Reward for Service
40 “The one who # 10:40 Or welcomes receives you # 10:40 Or welcomes receives Me, and the one who # 10:40 Or welcomes receives Me # 10:40 Or welcomes receives Him who sent Me. 41The one who #10:41 Or welcomesreceives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and the one who #10:41 Or welcomesreceives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person shall receive a righteous person’s reward. 42And whoever gives one of these #10:42 Possibly someone of low social standinglittle ones just a cup of cold water to drink in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”
