John 15

15
The Vine and the Branches
1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off any of my branches that don’t bear fruit, and he trims every branch that does bear fruit so that it will bear even more fruit. 3You are already trimmed and clean because of the word I’ve spoken to you. 4Remain in me, just as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself. It has to remain attached to the vine. In the same way, you can’t bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5“I am the vine and you are the branches. If you remain in me and I remain in you, you will bear much fruit. Apart from me, you can do nothing. 6If you don’t remain in me, you’ll be like a branch that breaks off and dries up. Branches like that are picked up, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you can ask for anything you wish, and it will be done for you. 8It brings glory to my Father and shows that you’re my disciples when you bear much fruit.
9“Just as the Father has loved me, I have loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love. In the same way, I have obeyed my Father’s commands and I remain in his love. 11I’ve told you this so that you’ll have the same joy that I have and your joy will be complete. 12Here is my command: Love one another, just as I have loved you. 13The greatest love that anyone can show is to give up their life for their friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. 15I don’t call you slaves anymore, because slaves don’t know their master’s plans. Instead, I’ve called you friends, because I’ve told you everything I’ve learned from my Father. 16You didn’t choose me, I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit that would endure, so that you would receive from the Father anything you ask for in my name. 17Here is my command: Love one another.
The World Hates the Disciples
18“If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first. 19If you belonged to the world, it would love you as one of its own. But you don’t belong to the world. I’ve chosen you out of the world. That’s why the world hates you. 20Remember what I told you: ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If people have hated me and tried to hurt me, they will do the same to you. If they have obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours too. 21They will treat you as they do because of my name, because they don’t know the one who sent me. 22If I hadn’t come and spoken to them, they wouldn’t be guilty of sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 23Whoever hates me hates my Father too. 24If I hadn’t done works among them that no one else had done, they wouldn’t be guilty of sin. But now they’ve seen those works and they’ve still hated both me and my Father. 25This has happened to make what’s written in their Law come true. It says, ‘They hated me without any reason.’
The Work of the Holy Spirit
26“From the Father, I’m going to send you the Helper, the Spirit of truth, who comes out from the Father. When the Helper arrives, he’ll be a witness about me. 27You must also be witnesses about me, because you’ve been with me from the beginning.
