John 14

14
Jesus Comforts His Disciples
1“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe in me too. 2There are many rooms in my Father’s house. If there weren’t, would I have told you that I’m going there to prepare a place for you? 3And after I go and prepare a place for you, I’ll come back and take you to be with me. That way you’ll also be where I am. 4You know the way to the place where I’m going.”
Jesus Is the Way to the Father
5Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you’re going. So how can we know the way?”
6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you really know me, you will know my Father also. From now on, you do know him and you’ve seen him.”
8Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”
9Jesus answered, “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I’ve been with you for so long? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. So how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? Whenever I speak to you, I’m not saying those words on my own authority. Rather, the Father who lives in me is doing his work. 11Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe what the works I’ve been doing say about me. 12Truly I tell you, anyone who believes in me will do the works that I’ve been doing. In fact, they’ll do even greater things, because I’m going to the Father. 13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If you ask me for anything in my name, I will do it.
Jesus Promises That the Holy Spirit Will Come
15“If you love me, obey my commands. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper who will be with you forever. 17That helper is the Spirit of truth. The world can’t accept him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you know him because he lives with you and will be in you. 18I will not leave you like children who don’t have any parents. I will come to you. 19Before long, the world won’t see me anymore, but you’ll see me. Because I live, you too will live. 20On that day you’ll realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21Anyone who has my commands and obeys them loves me. My Father will love the one who loves me, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
22Then another disciple named Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “Lord why do you plan to show yourself to us but not to the world?”
23Jesus answered, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey my teaching. The words you hear me saying aren’t my own. They belong to the Father who sent me.
25“I’ve spoken all these things while I’m still with you. 26But the Father will send the Helper or Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, in my name to help you. The Spirit will teach you all things and remind you of everything I’ve said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; I give my peace to you. I don’t give to you the way the world does. So don’t let your hearts be distressed, and don’t be afraid.
28“You heard me say, ‘I’m going away and I’m coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you’d be glad that I’m going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am. 29I’ve told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen, you’ll believe. 30I won’t say much more to you, because the prince of this world is coming. He has no power over me, 31but he’s coming so that the world may learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me to do.
“Now let’s get up and be on our way.
