John 13

13
Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet
1It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Jesus had always loved his disciples who were in the world, and he now loved them to the very end.
2They were having their evening meal. The devil had already put in the mind of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, the scheme of handing Jesus over to his enemies. 3Jesus knew that the Father had put everything under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God. 4So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothes, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5After that, he poured water into a large bowl and began to wash his disciples’ feet. He dried them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6When he got to Simon Peter, Peter said, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
7Jesus answered, “You don’t realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8“No,” said Peter, “I’ll never let you wash my feet.”
Jesus responded, “Unless I wash them, you can’t be part of what I’m doing.”
9“Then not just my feet, Lord,” Simon Peter replied. “Wash my hands and my head too!”
10Jesus answered, “People who’ve had a bath only need to wash their feet. The rest of their body is clean. And you are clean—but not all of you are.” 11Jesus knew who was going to hand him over to his enemies. That was why he said not every one of them was clean.
12When Jesus had finished washing their feet, he put his clothes back on and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I’ve done for you?” he asked them. 13“You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and that’s the right thing to do, because that’s what I am. If 14I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you should also wash one another’s feet. 15I’ve given you an example. You should do as I have done for you. 16Truly I tell you, a slave is not greater than his master. A messenger isn’t greater than the one who sends him. 17Now that you know these things, you’ll be blessed if you do them.
Jesus Tells What Judas Is Going to Do
18“I’m not talking about all of you. I know the ones I’ve chosen. But something is going to happen to make the passage of Scripture come true that says, ‘The one who shared my bread has turned against me.’
19“I’m telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen, you’ll believe that I am who I am. 20Truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me, and whoever who accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”
21After he’d said this, Jesus became distressed and said, “Truly I tell you, one of you is going to hand me over to my enemies.”
22His disciples looked at one another. They didn’t have any idea which one of them he meant. 23The disciple Jesus loved was next to him at the table. 24Simon Peter motioned to that disciple and said to him, “Ask Jesus which one he means.”
25The disciple leaned back against Jesus and asked him, “Lord, who is it?”
26Jesus answered, “It’s the one I’ll give this piece of bread to after I’ve dipped it in the dish.” He dipped the bread in the dish and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.
So Jesus told him, “Do quickly what you’re going to do.” 28But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. Since 29Judas was in charge of the money, some of the disciples thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the feast. Others thought Jesus was talking about giving something to the poor. 30As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
Peter Will Say That He Doesn’t Know Jesus
31After Judas was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is going to receive glory and bring glory to God. 32If the Son brings glory to God, God himself will bring glory to the Son, and God will do it right away.
33“My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I am telling you now: You can’t come where I’m going.
34“I’m giving you a new command: Love one another. You must love one another just as I have loved you. 35If you do love one another, then everyone will know that you are my disciples.”
36Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”
Jesus answered, “You can’t follow me right now to where I’m going. But you will follow me later.”
37“Lord, why can’t I follow you right now?” Peter responded. “I’ll give my life for you!”
38Then Jesus answered, “Will you really give your life for me? Truly I tell you, before the rooster crows early tomorrow morning, you’re going to say three times that you don’t know me!
