To Older and Younger Believers
1I want to appeal to the elders among you as someone who’s an elder himself. I also appeal to you as a witness of Christ’s sufferings and as someone who will share in the glory that’s going to be revealed. 2Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care. Watch over them, not because you have to, but because you want to. That’s what God wants you to do. Don’t do it to try to get money in dishonest ways, but because you really want to serve. 3Don’t act like dictators towards those who are under your care. Instead, be good examples to the flock. 4When the Chief Shepherd returns, you’ll receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
5In the same way, you who are younger should follow the lead of your elders. All of you should have a humble attitude toward one another, because Scripture says,
“God opposes those who are proud,
but he gives grace to those who are humble.”
6So humble yourselves under God’s mighty hand, and then he will honor you at the right time. 7Turn all your worries over to him, because he cares about you.
8Be alert and stay sober. Your enemy the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for something to kill and eat. 9Fight back against him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is going through the same kind of suffering.
10After you’ve suffered for a little while, the God of all grace will restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast. He has called you to share in his eternal glory in Christ. 11May he receive the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Final Greetings
12With the help of Silas, who I consider to be a faithful brother, I’ve written you this short letter to encourage you and to confirm that this is the true grace of God. Remain strong in it.
13The one who is in Babylon, who is chosen together with you, sends her greetings. Mark, my son in the faith, also sends you his greetings.
14Greet one other with a kiss of friendship.
