Judging Others
1 “Do not # 7:1 I.e., make a habit of judging or have a judgmental attitude judge, so that you will not be judged. 2For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and #7:2 Lit by which measure you measureby your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. 3Why do you look at the #7:3 Or splinterspeck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4Or how #7:4 Lit willcan you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the #7:4 Or splinterspeck out of your eye,’ and look, the log is in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the #7:5 Or splinterspeck out of your brother’s eye!
6 “Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
Prayer and the Golden Rule
7 “ # 7:7 Or Keep asking Ask, and it will be given to you; # 7:7 Or keep seeking seek, and you will find; # 7:7 Or keep knocking knock, and it will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9Or what person is there among you #7:9 Lit whom his son will askwho, when his son asks for a loaf of bread, #7:9 Lit he will not give him a stone, will he?will give him a stone? 10Or #7:10 Lit also will askif he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? 11So if you, despite being #7:11 I.e., as sinful mankindevil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
12 “In everything, therefore, # 7:12 Lit you, too, do so for them treat people the same way you want # 7:12 Lit people them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
The Narrow and Wide Gates
13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14For the gate is narrow and the way is constricted that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
A Tree and Its Fruit
15 “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16You will #7:16 Or recognizeknow them by their fruits. #7:16 Lit They do not gatherGrapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they? 17So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20So then, you will #7:20 Or recognizeknow them by their fruits.
21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many #7:22 Or works of powermiracles?’ 23And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; leave Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
The Two Foundations
24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of Mine, and # 7:24 Lit does them acts on them, will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25And the rain fell and the #7:25 Lit riversfloods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not #7:26 Lit do themact on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27And the rain fell and the #7:27 Lit riversfloods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and its collapse was great.”
28 # 7:28 Lit And it happened when When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29for He was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.

Be Careful About Judging Others
1“Don’t judge others, or you will be judged. 2You will be judged in the same way that you judge others, and the amount you give to others will be given to you.
3“Why do you notice the little piece of dust in your friend’s eye, but you don’t notice the big piece of wood in your own eye? 4How can you say to your friend, ‘Let me take that little piece of dust out of your eye’? Look at yourself! You still have that big piece of wood in your own eye. 5You hypocrite! First, take the wood out of your own eye. Then you will see clearly to take the dust out of your friend’s eye.
6“Don’t give holy things to dogs, and don’t throw your pearls before pigs. Pigs will only trample on them, and dogs will turn to attack you.
Ask God for What You Need
7“Ask, and God will give to you. Search, and you will find. Knock, and the door will open for you. 8Yes, everyone who asks will receive. Everyone who searches will find. And everyone who knocks will have the door opened.
9“If your children ask for bread, which of you would give them a stone? 10Or if your children ask for a fish, would you give them a snake? 11Even though you are bad, you know how to give good gifts to your children. How much more your heavenly Father will give good things to those who ask him!
The Most Important Rule
12“Do to others what you want them to do to you. This is the meaning of the law of Moses and the teaching of the prophets.
The Way to Heaven Is Hard
13“Enter through the narrow gate. The gate is wide and the road is wide that leads to hell, and many people enter through that gate. 14But the gate is small and the road is narrow that leads to true life. Only a few people find that road.
People Know You by Your Actions
15“Be careful of false prophets. They come to you looking gentle like sheep, but they are really dangerous like wolves. 16You will know these people by what they do. Grapes don’t come from thornbushes, and figs don’t come from thorny weeds. 17In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot produce good fruit. 19Every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20In the same way, you will know these false prophets by what they do.
21“Not all those who say ‘You are our Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven. The only people who will enter the kingdom of heaven are those who do what my Father in heaven wants. 22On the last day many people will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, we spoke for you, and through you we forced out demons and did many miracles.’ 23Then I will tell them clearly, ‘Get away from me, you who do evil. I never knew you.’
Two Kinds of People
24“Everyone who hears my words and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on rock. 25It rained hard, the floods came, and the winds blew and hit that house. But it did not fall, because it was built on rock. 26Everyone who hears my words and does not obey them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27It rained hard, the floods came, and the winds blew and hit that house, and it fell with a big crash.”
28When Jesus finished saying these things, the people were amazed at his teaching, 29because he did not teach like their teachers of the law. He taught like a person who had authority.
