Judas’ Remorse
1Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death; 2and they bound Him and led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate the governor.
3Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty #27:3 Or silver shekelspieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? You shall see to it yourself!” 5And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and left; and he went away and hanged himself. 6The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them in the temple treasury, since it is money paid for blood.” 7And they conferred together and #27:7 Lit from themwith the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers. 8For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “And #27:9 Or I took; cf. Zech 11:13they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the One whose price had been set by the sons of Israel; 10and #27:10 Some early mss I gavethey gave them for the Potter’s Field, just as the Lord directed me.”
Jesus before Pilate
11Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, “So You are the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him, “It is as you say.” 12And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not offer any answer. 13Then Pilate *said to Him, “Do You not hear how many things they are testifying against You?” 14And still He did not answer him in regard to even a single #27:14 Lit wordcharge, so the governor was greatly amazed.
15Now at the Passover Feast the governor was accustomed to release for the #27:15 Lit crowdpeople any one prisoner whom they wanted. 16And at that time they were holding a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. 17So when the people gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18For he knew that it was because of envy that #27:18 I.e., the Jewish leadersthey had handed Him over.
19And while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent him a message, saying, “See that you have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for #27:19 Lit todaylast night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him.” 20But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas, and to put Jesus to death. 21And the governor #27:21 Lit answering, said to themsaid to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22Pilate *said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all *said, “#27:22 Lit Have Him crucifiedCrucify Him!” 23But he said, “Why, what evil has He done?” Yet they kept shouting all the more, saying, “#27:23 Lit Have Him crucifiedCrucify Him!”
24Now when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this Man’s blood; you yourselves shall see.” 25And all the people replied, “His blood shall be on us and on our children!” 26Then he released Barabbas #27:26 Or to themfor them; but after having Jesus flogged, he handed Him over to be crucified.
Jesus Is Mocked
27Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the #27:27 I.e., the governor’s official residencePraetorium and gathered the whole Roman #27:27 Normally 600 men (the number varied)cohort to Him. 28And they stripped Him and put a red #27:28 I.e., a Roman soldier’s cloakcloak on Him. 29And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and put a #27:29 Or staff; i.e., to mimic a king’s scepterreed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30And they spit on Him, and took the reed and beat Him on the head. 31And after they had mocked Him, they took the cloak off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
32As they were coming out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon, #27:32 Lit this onewhom they compelled to carry His #27:32 I.e., the crossbeam for a crosscross.
The Crucifixion
33And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34they gave Him wine mixed with #27:34 Prob. referring to the taste of myrrh, added to lessen painbile to drink; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink it.
35And when they had crucified Him, they divided His garments among themselves by casting #27:35 Lit a lotlots. 36And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there. 37And above His head they put up the charge against Him #27:37 Lit writtenwhich read, “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
38At that time two #27:38 Or robbersrebels *were being crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39And those passing by were #27:39 Or blasphemingspeaking abusively to Him, shaking their heads, 40and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42“He saved others; #27:42 Or can He not save Himself? He cannot save Himself! He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43He has trusted in God; let God rescue Him now, if He #27:43 Or desires;takes pleasure in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” 44And the #27:44 Or robbersrebels who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him in the same way.
45Now from the #27:45 I.e., noonsixth hour darkness #27:45 Lit occurredfell upon all the land until the #27:45 I.e., 3 p.m.ninth hour. 46And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabaktanei?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 47And some of those who were standing there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” 48And immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49But the rest of them said, “#27:49 Lit Allow that we seeLet us see if Elijah comes to save Him#27:49 Some early mss And another took a spear and pierced His side, and there came out water and blood (cf. John 19:34).” 50And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit. 51And behold, the #27:51 Or curtainveil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split. 52Also the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the #27:52 Lit holy ones; i.e., God’s peoplesaints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many. 54Now as for the centurion and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the other things that were happening, they became extremely frightened and said, “Truly this was #27:54 Or a son of God; or a son of a godthe Son of God!”
55And many women were there watching from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee while caring for Him. 56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
Jesus Is Buried
57Now when it was evening, a rich man from Arimathea came, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.
62Now on the next day, that is, the day which is after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate, 63and they said, “Sir, we remember that when that deceiver was still alive, He said, ‘After three days I am rising.’ 64Therefore, give orders for the tomb to be made secure until the third day; otherwise, His disciples may come and steal Him, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.” 65Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go, make it as secure as you know how.” 66And they went and made the tomb secure with the guard, sealing the stone.

Matthew 27

Judas hangs himself
1Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. 2So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.
3When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4‘I have sinned,’ he said, ‘for I have betrayed innocent blood.’
‘What is that to us?’ they replied. ‘That’s your responsibility.’
5So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
6The chief priests picked up the coins and said, ‘It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.’ 7So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: ‘They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.’#27:10 See Zech. 11:12,13; Jer. 19:1-13; 32:6-9.
Jesus before Pilate
11Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’
‘You have said so,’ Jesus replied.
12When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. 13Then Pilate asked him, ‘Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?’ 14But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge – to the great amazement of the governor.
15Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. 16At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus#27:16 Many manuscripts do not have Jesus; also in verse 17. Barabbas. 17So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, ‘Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?’ 18For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent him this message: ‘Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.’
20But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
21‘Which of the two do you want me to release to you?’ asked the governor.
‘Barabbas,’ they answered.
22‘What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?’ Pilate asked.
They all answered, ‘Crucify him!’
23‘Why? What crime has he committed?’ asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, ‘Crucify him!’
24When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. ‘I am innocent of this man’s blood,’ he said. ‘It is your responsibility!’
25All the people answered, ‘His blood is on us and on our children!’
26Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
The soldiers mock Jesus
27Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers round him. 28They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’ they said. 30They spat on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again. 31After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
The crucifixion of Jesus
32As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33They came to a place called Golgotha (which means ‘the place of the skull’). 34There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. 37Above his head they placed the written charge against him:
this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads 40and saying, ‘You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!’ 41In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42‘He saved others,’ they said, ‘but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, “I am the Son of God.” ’ 44In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The death of Jesus
45From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli,#27:46 Some manuscripts Eloi, Eloi lema sabachthani?’ (which means ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’).#27:46 Psalm 22:1
47When some of those standing there heard this, they said, ‘He’s calling Elijah.’
48Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49The rest said, ‘Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.’
50And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
51At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and#27:53 Or tombs, and after Jesus’ resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, ‘Surely he was the Son of God!’
55Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. 56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,#27:56 Greek Joses, a variant of Joseph and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
The burial of Jesus
57As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The guard at the tomb
62The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63‘Sir,’ they said, ‘we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, “After three days I will rise again.” 64So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.’
65‘Take a guard,’ Pilate answered. ‘Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.’ 66So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.
